You cannot compare Fantastic Four to Daredevil's opening. Daredevil was coming off the huge success of Spider-Man. It was the first big superhero movie after it and at that time superheroes were the craze.

I dont know if it was you or someone else who said the comic flick craze has died down in the Batman thread sometime ago, but whoever said it, he was damn right. If movies like Daredevil and Hulk came out right now they wouldnt come close to what they actually did, the craze has died down. FF4 is no exception.

It doesn't happen often, but I love it when it does. I agree with Mav about this. FF4 is going to open huge. I dont know about the quality yet, to make a final prediction, but it will open north of 60 million. The buzz on this movie is amazing. When I saw Sith with some of my friends, they were oohing and awwing, and I was confused as hell cause normally I am the one who has to get them interested in movies. And I have heard the same from just about EVERYONE I have talked to, which is something I haven't seen since X-Men 2 was coming out.

I have a feeling that it will even pass 70 million, but I am not too confident in it. I am definitly in this club though.

I'm in!! For the hell of it ... not because i think this is a good movie or anything but because we still haven't had our summer pop corn fun.

My precious batman will be bwat but who the fuck cares ... it can hold the title for best comic book movie ever while FF4 can take the comic book crown for this year. I'll be happy either way.

FF4 looks like shit. Not Herbie-looks-like-shit shit, nothing else is that bad, but it looks awful.

That said, I was completely wrong about Star Wars and refuse to go against what Mav says this time out of fear. In.

Count me in as well Mav. The marketing for this has been non-stop and it is still weeks away. I see a 65 mil opening in the works regardless of how massive WOTW opens. Unlike Batman and WOTW, this actually opens on a Fri which should all but put in the 60 mil range.

I don't think Fantastic Four can reach $60m. But I'll be there opening weekend.

Hmm, I think around the release, I'll be predicting less, but for now, add me. This summer really looks dull box-office-wise and this one has got to be it. I am personally not too excited about the movie, but the marketing is really really ntense. I have seen the trailer before pretty much every single movie in the last 2-3 months and I am sure it's no different for US folks. I just have some problem seeing a $21+ million opening day for this one (which it'll need to make it to $60 million), but recently my faith in WotW has been falling a bit, so I believe it won't hurt it as much as I originally thought.

So yeah, I'm in. Should make around what The Hulk did in its opening weekend, but as DP07 said, it'll drop hard.

Before the summer, I never would have thought this would pass $100 million. It's had fresh-feeling ads and colorful posters that really grab your attention. But still, superhero movies have been going down since of overload, so I don't think it's going to open to $60 million.

My predictions..

Opening: $48 million
Total: $120 million

I still can't believe that this might open over $40 million.

Can we expect some problems with data from Showbizdata during that period?

Maybe not, since you expect WOTW to do well.

Anyone who's predicting $60m+ in this thread, and yet, for various games predict less, should be dishonourably discharged. ;)

caught a media screening of Fantastic Four last sunday here in New Zealand so I thought I send you a review. I didn't hate the film, but there too much crap stuff in the film to actually like it, and to be honest the more I sit down and talk about it with others that saw it, I begin to dislike it even more, so I had to write a review before my opinion completely changed.

I had such high hopes for this film, right up until the day I saw it. What a fool!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

FANTASITC FOUR REVIEW

5/10

With the X Men and Spiderman movies proving that superhero films can be extremely good, it's a real shame that Fantastic Four is a step backwards for the genre.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like about the Fan 4, but unfortunately, there's even more to dislike! The reason X Men, Spiderman and even the new Batman film work so well is the studios treat them with respect by hiring top directors like Bryan Singer, Sam Raimi and Chris Nolan and actually casting good actors for the iconic roles, shock horror!

It's weird, but it seems like Fox totally forgot that they were the ones who have raised the bar and went against everything they did right with X Men and Spiderman. Gone is the visionary director and in their place, Tim Story, who without being too harsh, is merely......your generic director for hire, someone who is extremely capable of standing behind a camera and yelling "action" but has no real vision, sure Barbershop was a fairly good movie, but it's in no way a great stepping stone to move on to a mega budget superhero film.

This, I'm assuming, is why Fantastic Four feels very much like an extended episode of Charmed with great special effects. The best shots in the film are the ones that are completely computer generated eg, city shots and zooms, and that's thanks to the effects team not the director.

As for the cast, well.....they're not too bad, Michael Chiklis (TV's The Shield) does justice to Ben Grimm/The Thing but unfortunately this is one time that I wish they had used 100% CG for a character rather than a rubber suit, as it clearly looks like a rubber suit, not rock like it should!

Jessica Alba, who will never be known for her amazing acting abilities, does an adequate job as Sue Storm/Invisible Girl and Ioan Gruffud (last seen as King Arthur) is ok though completely underused, the standout however is Chris Evans who does a wicked job as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, he seems the most comfortable in his role and just has fun with it, which makes the cheesy dialogue seem acceptable.

I know it seems like I hated the film, but that's not true at all, so now that I've got all the poo-pooing out of my system, lets look at the good bits. The effects and action for the most part are great, (apart from The Thing looking a little rubbery at times) the Human Torch flame effects are outstanding and are the highlight of the film, it's just a shame you don’t get to seem them all that often, but when you do, it's very cool! The film benefits from having a fairly interesting origin story. It's cool to see a bunch of characters getting their superpowers and all dealing with them in their own way eg, Johnny Storm embracing his flaming abilities and loving the superhero idea to Ben Grimm/The Thing dealing with the burden of being covered in rock and looking, to most, like a monster. It makes you realise that we haven't really seen that in a superhero film before. Also, I have to mention, Julian McMahon, best known as the womanising Christian on TV's Nip/Tuck, does a surprisingly good job as the movie's main villain Victor Von Doom aka Dr Doom.

All in all the film suffers from a weak script and lackluster directing and is only slightly redeemed by it's few impressive action scenes and some nice effects. It's hard to believe that visionary directors such as Steven Sodebergh and Peyton Reed were once attached to direct, hmmm, what went wrong.

If you have been following Aint it cool recently, they are extremely biased against FF4. They have written the movie off already.

But in any case, the film doesn´t have to appeal to Internet geeks opr comic books fans who will very likely end up seeing it anyway, but to mainstream audiences...

Who gives a fuck what they said over in New Zealand about this?? :-k It's here in the U.S that counts the most, but I will agree that they should've went with 100% CGI for The THING and used a higher budget.. Nevertheless, the movie will do well with the humor factor of it, the female appeal and pretty decent FX like the 1st X-MEN and if it's a hit?? Then perhaps FOX will put up more $$$ for the sequel and use CGI for The THING.. I'll bet it does better than what BATMAN did since it won't be taken so seriously for a summer movie..

Harry mostly, who thinks it looks underwhelming, still he hopes the movie proves him wrong, at least that's what he's claiming.

In any case, this review comes not from an AICN staff member.

If someone reviews it not favorably no matter where he lives it's not a good sign, you know...

Granted, it's just one review...

No, but hey:

"Guess what, Harry? You were right! The movie sucks"

By the way, the review is kinda crappy, and doesn´t say anything that you can not tell by the trailer. And the reviewer seemed to like some things in it... he actually almost talks more about the things he likes!

Anyway, as you say, It´s just one review. And I don´t think this movie needs great reviews to be a huge hit...
