Yes, he was clearly poking fun at himself. He stared at the couch and slowly crawled while the audience cheered. But I have no doubt some press and people will only use the clip of him on the couch without the backstory and provide their own commentary just to reassure his "weirdness". [-X
I agree with that the only thing he seemed to be out of touch lately is being "Tom Cruise". Which I find refreshing because based on interviews and comments from people who actually worked or met him, I have always suspect that the real Tom Cruise is a goofball. I thought that the Oprah's appearance was blow way out of proportion. Oprah is one of Cruise's longtime good friends, he probably was too relaxed and didn't think too much about the millions of people who'll be watching. I watched it and it wasn't a big deal. It was one of those "you had to be there" kinda thing. I know people who ended up watching it online to see what all the talk is about and all of them seemed to don't get all the hoopla attention around this appearance.
As for the Shields comment. People put foot in there mouth all the time.

But his 30 seconds comment was nowhere near as ignorant as the stuff people say about him. Maybe we should evaluate ourselves first.
That being said, nothing Tom Cruise had said or done in the past month or 20 odd years even come close to be as ridiculous as all the suggestions comparing him to Michael Jackson.

It will take some serious nitpickings. He has about the same amount of common things to Jackson as you and me.
