 Summer 2006 Overcrowded?
Summer of '06 looks to be one of (if not the) biggest summers ever. However, I've noticed a huge amount of gigantic movies matching up against each other or plotting to open in an already crowded date. For example Mission Impossible 3 vs Poseiden or Over The Hedge vs The Da Vinci Code. Plus many big movies have yet to find dates, like Sin City 2 and MEG. So what do you think? Will all of this sort out by then, or will the summer be filled with two movies that individually be gigantic, having their potential squandered via competition? What do you think the final release date will look like? General thoughts?
*this might seem a little early to some, or people might say that "this happens every summer". Those may be facts, but I found this situation particularly interesting because of the amount of projects sharing dates at the moment*

I think studios will hold their ground for as long as possible, trying to scare others away. Eventually though, someone will budge. Much like Fantastic Four and War of the Worlds. No way MI:3 and Poseidon stay in the same slot. I think Sin City 2 will maybe be pushed back to sometime in Spring. It will be interesting to watch unfold.

Poseidon will probably move to sometime in July. X3 and M:i-3 might switch spots (to copy the release dates of their predecessors). Da Vinci Code and Over the Hedge have nowhere near the same audience, so they'll probably stay as is. Superman's got the Spider-Man 2/War of the World spot, and Pirates 2 is going with what worked for the first one.
All in all, a great looking summer.

The Poseidon Adventure will probably move to the May 12th slot if Mission Impossible holds it's ground. June 16th, July 14th, and July 21st could use some more movies. I'm sure MEG will take one of those.

A new action movie directed by Jan De Bont (Speed, Twister) about a gigantic shark.

What he said. Picture Jaws, but much, much larger with modern FX.

Although De Bont is a far cry from Spielberg...
Thanks, though.

It made almost $200 million worldwide, and kids movies almost always do well on DVD. Plus, it outperformed the other two movies it opened against, both of which had significantly higher budgets, which makes it look like a success by comparison.

The first made $75 million(domestic). Which is about $73 million too much. I'm not sure what the budget was but it made more than I thought it would.

What a trash summer. Except for Cars, I will skip all of those films.
Urgh, I hope we will have 2 consecutive summers of decline, so that Htown will wake up and rpdouce films of substance.
I miss 2004 Spidey, Incredibles- where are you guys????

I wonder if Eragon might be able to get close to HP numbers. It's fan base is quite big.

I completely agree. Looks like a kickass summer, but if I have to deal with that release schedule the summer will be more bad than good. X3 should start the summer, no question. Da Vinci is fine. Cars should go for Memorial Day weekend, and if ti doesn't, MI3 should (just to keep up with tradition). PotC and Eragon shouldn't have such 'obscure' release dates (although if Batman does well, I won't be as upset with Eragon's release). I'd still love to see Superman canned so Singer can work on XMen like he should. Superman is going to blow (wow that sounded way too much like BKB). But in spite of me wanting POTC2 to open on July 4 weekend, it just doesn't seem fitting for this movie to do it. Superman does. I can't quite explain it, but POTC just doesn't seem the movie to open a holiday for me. I don't get it. Charolette's Web should move to avoid Pixar at all costs. You think studios would understand that by now.

Hmm. I think it looks quite promising. Minus Garfield. What about Lady in the Water? The new M. Knight movie with Bryce Dallas Howard and Paul Giamatti? You liked The Village. Maybe you'll like this one.

Yeah, I'm being overly dramatic. I tend to be like that sometimes.

She must be saving up big, for her drug addict future. Come on... a child star NOT growing up to be a has-been actor and turning to drugs for comfort? The odds are against her being a huge star in a few years, but maybe she'll pull a Drew Barrymore after that.
