I'm trying it out too and like it a lot so far. One thing that I like is how you can have multiple homepages at once. So when you start up the browser there's 2-3 pages there waiting for you, tabbed. That's so useful.
I had tried firefox a couple years ago but I dont recall it being this good, it's come a long way. It feels like IE 7.

That's true. Firefox has come a loooong way, especially in the past couple of releases. It became much more polished, less buggy, and works on virtually all websites that used to be IE only.

All the cool kids are doing it.
Seriously, though, it has better features - tabbed browsing alone makes it worth it. Try it out, and see for yourself - it's only a 4.5Mb download.

Because you're less likely to get viruses and spyware if you are using a non-MS product like this. Not because MS sucks, but because MS has a huge target painted on it from being so widely used.
Also of course all the other reasons mentioned, it feels faster so far, and it has nice features like tabbed browsing.
You should do what I am doing, download it and try it, you can always switch back later if you really want to.
If you do use it, be sure to post your impressions.

With all the new ones coming out, has anyone changed from Internet Exploror?
I currently use Mozzila Firefox, and it is amazing!!! Havent had one problem yet!!!
I use Firefox, anyone who uses my computer has to use Firefox as well, and I encourage all my students to use Firefox.
Firefox is a much more secure browser. For example, Firefox doesn't support ActiveX at all, because ActiveX is mainly just used to write malicous code (though Microsoft uses ActiveX when doing WIdnows Update).

One thing about Firefox...on the Firefox site where you can download stuff, they imply that you can get themes for the browser, skins I guess they mean. But I couldn't find any listed.
As far as extensions go, the tweaking little stuff, what are the main basic ones that really help? I don't want to install 25 of them but might do 2-3 if there are some good ones.
update: I found the themes. But woulds till welcome extension recommendations.

As for extensions, you can do without any...I installed around 10, but none are essential, like BugMeNot extension, Dictionary, Knowledge...

I like the "bugmenot" extension, it's on the bugmenot.com
Also, I posted the spellchecker up above.

The only real issue I've had so far with it is that I can't get rollover menus to come up. Hard to describe what I mean since I don't know the precise term, but I mean like if you have IE 6 open and go to Slate or MSNBC and put the mouse over a menu word on the left, a big submenu list pops up of stories to choose from that you can click on. With Firefox that isn't happening.
Maybe it's a MS only thing?

I haven't used IE in so long that I couldn't tell you. But most likely, it is an MS-only feature.

Both Slate and MSNBC need you to sign in with Microsoft Passport to get in fully.
And Mozilla doesn't support that now.

The popup submenu of MSNBC works fine with me on Firefox. You may have to wait a little for all the menus to finish loading.

If you are trying to run it under Mozilla, I guess it isn't compatible... You need to use IE or Netscape (certain versions only...)

Mozilla Launches Firefox 1.0
Alternative browser features protection against online scams.
Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service
Tuesday, November 09, 2004
The Mozilla Foundation has released version 1.0 of its Firefox browser, an open-source product that has generated lofty expectations that it will offer real competition to Microsoft's ubiquitous Internet Explorer.
A preview release of the Firefox browser available since last month has been downloaded over eight million times, the Mozilla Foundation says in a press release this week.
Firefox 1.0 is available in 12 languages for Microsoft's Windows, Apple Computer's Mac OS X, and Linux. The product can be obtained through Mozilla's Web site as a free download or in CD format with a user's manual for $14.95.
The result of an open-source project, Firefox became a reality "thanks to the tireless efforts of hundreds of community volunteers and developers around the world," the Mozilla Foundation says.
Improved Browsing, Added Security
Firefox 1.0 features an integrated pop-up ad blocker, and safeguards against online scams such as phishing and spoofing by displaying secure sites' identities, the Mozilla Foundation says.
The product also attempts to improve the browsing experience by consolidating multiple Web pages into a single Window and organizing them with tabs, a feature the Mozilla Foundation calls "tabbed browsing."
For those concerned about a bumpy migration to Firefox from other browsers, the product can import bookmarks, passwords, and cookies, the Mozilla Foundation says.
The Mozilla Foundation, based in Mountain View, California, is a nonprofit organization founded in July 2003 to support the Mozilla open source software project, launched by Netscape Communications in 1998.

Today it is official, I even have it announced in my sig...
Firefox is awesome!!! And that's coming from a user of IE for about 7 years... Neither Netscape, nor Opera could sway me away for years, Firefox did it in less than two weeks...

I've wore my Firefox t-shirt today, and I shamelessly plug Firefox to all my computer science students.
