I'm hoping for as much as it can manage. But i'm guessing about $4,000,000.

Any ganders for Howl's Moving Castle? It'll be in 35 theaters according to BOM, hmm.

Spirited Away opened in 26 theaters with a PTA of $17,302. Hayao Miyazaki is better known now among art-house crowds, so I think Howl's Moving Castle can open with at least similar PTA in 9 more theaters. I'd think a 0.5M weekend.

Does anyone know what the plans are for HMC expanding after that first week?

Think about it this way. Downloading is bad (only if they are hollywood films, just like the commericals that play in the theaters about that crying set caterer saying how downloading is ruining her) but since its I believe High Tension is an italian film, there probably isnt anything wrong with it.

Shark Boy and Lava Girl predictions are all over the place, ranging from $10-30 million. Should be interesting.

HIGH TENSION is French.

And downloading isn't a huge deal when it's some big successful mainstream hollywood flick that doesn't need any more money. If it's already big then it won't miss your few bucks.

*HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE - $700,000

I really hate to comment on another post of yours saying how they should have just released this STV and nobody will see it, but I have to say that while you might not have seen any marketing for it, I've seen a ton of TV spots for it. And also, SIN CITY and THE PASSION were sadistic and ultra-violent and that didn't hurt them. Besides, this is a horror film, people going to it will be people that like horror films or they wouldn't be seeing it. People won't know it's incredibly violent just from a TV spot so it wouldn't prevent them from seeing it. And hello, it's ridiculous to say it being sadistic would make people not see it because another Lions Gate horror film, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, was advertised as being incredibly sadistic and that helped it. It ended up opening really well and having surprisingly solid legs, and it sucked! The reviews were bad too. Yet it was a mini-sleeper hit. There's no reason this couldn't be, and it's opening on more than double the screens HOUSE opened on.

HIGH TENSION could end up having a $5,000 per-screen average. This is one that could open mediocre or surprisingly excellent. It's not impossible for it to do great (6-9 Million would be great, even amazing!) since it is summer, so that will definitely help it. And the awesome trailers (the first two anyway) have been being shown in front of movies since SAW, which was a hit and a horror film so it had the same kind of audience. It was also shown in front of DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, an even bigger hit than SAW. And it's been in front of various other movies too, like some prints of AMITYVILLE, UNLEASHED, HOUSE OF WAX, MINDHUNTERS, CRASH, etc... Even THE LONGEST YARD at Thompsoncory's theater (which showed the great second trailer with the quotes that I'm sure would play very well with audiences). And now I'm sure it's in front of most prints of LORDS OF DOGTOWN, which also did surprisingly decent. So it has had quite a bit of exposure, and a shitload of TV spots. I'm sure the TV spots will change this week too and will be awesome with cool quotes, like the "IT WILL SCARE THE HELL OUT OF YOU" one.

Right now my prediction puts it in the low $4,000 per-screen average area, however it's obvious it will be in more than 1,300 theaters since actuals pretty much always end up being higher than the estimates. It could be in 1,500 or so. Which would put my per-screen average below $4,000. I can't imagine it not being able to have at the very least a per-screen average of $3,500.
