Excel Spreadsheet to [Table] Tag Converter Tool
Author Message
Post Excel Spreadsheet to [Table] Tag Converter Tool
As promised, I wrote a macro for excel to transform an Excel table to a BB Code table.

Here are the rough instructions:

1. Make sure that macros in Excel are enabled. To do that, start Excel, go to Tools->Macro->Security. If the Security level is on Medium, then you're good. If it's not, set it to Medium and exit Excel.
2. Download this file: http://www.worldofkj.com/downloads/Excel2BB.xls (Make sure to right click on it and select 'Save As...')
3. Open the file you just downloaded. You should now see a little toolbar with a button that says 'Excel2BB Converter'.
4. Open the Excel file that contains your table, select the entire table and click on the 'Excel2BB Converter' button. A message box should pop-up saying that the BBCode is in the clipboard. Hit OK.
5. Reply to this thread, hit Ctrl+V and hit preview. That should be your Excel table. Please post it in this thread so that I can see the program works.

Note: You set up backgrounds for all cells in Excel. Also, the macro will recognize text that's written in Bold and apply those settings here as well. The font color and size of your excel table are <strike>not yet supported, but will be soon.</strike> now supported as well!

If you have any problems, questions or suggestions, <strike>you can shove them (Eagle, enable the damn feature!)</strike> please reply in this thread.

Hope you all enjoy it.

EDIT: See this post for an example of a table converted from Excel to BBCode as well as a few issues that the program has right now.

Things to do:
  • <strike>Inheriting Excel formats for alignment, font and size.</strike>
  • <strike>Remove color numbers for default formatted cells.</strike>

EDIT2: If anyone wants to see the code for the program, PM me. You have to have a medium-level knowledge of VB and/or Excel Macros to understand what goes on there.

Do they still have to wrap the code in the table tags or is that done automatically? If not, please include it in your faq.

No, it's all automatic.

Great work Krem, thanks a lot. Some small problems though.

It shows some more decimals than 2 what I had below in one example. Also, all the numbers were percentages. Plus, not sure why the first column is so wide...

Small things as I said, and thank you again for doing this.

EDIT: Sometimes I get runtime error '13', type mismatch, and not sure what prompted it.

I believe an example of the spreadsheet in the first post would help greatly.

Thanks, Nebs.

I'll fix the formatting once I get home tonight. And the first column is too wide because of the shameless plug I put on the bottom.
I'll fix that as well.

matatonio, the macro converts the tables in Excel into tables in BBCode; that makes it much easier to post tables on the messageboards.

Error 13.. hmmm

Nebs, I'll talk to you online tonight and maybe we can track it down.

Oops, missed that. So obvious now.

Btw, a favour if it can be done?

I noticed that mrow command alligns data in the center of the cell, any way to implement that? Though, also gives us annoying (if it's row after row after row ;)) yellow background.

Another slight problem. Sometimes when cells have just a single number, the program when pasting to forum puts them all in single cell. Might be my sheet that isn't arranged well though. Here it is if you're in mood to check it. http://free-zg.t-com.hr/nebuka/domint/DomIntStats.xls

Nebs, sure thing, I was planning on inheriting Excel formatting anyways, just haven't gotten around to it completely.

As for the other thing, that's very interesting. I'll check it out once I get home tonight. Looks like a bug in the program but I can't pinpoint it yet.

EDIT: One more thing that I will change is that if the cell formatting is default (white background, black font, etc.) then the colors won't get parsed into the BBCode, and that will make the code for the tables smaller in size and easier to read.

If you implement font color recognition, and perhaps aligning to middle...to me it would be perfect. Now it's just frikkin brilliant.

Btw, those predictions for friday are as close to the truth as possible.

There was yet another problem wit the file (my shameless plug was trying to create a row outside of the table ). That's been fixed now. The file is here until Eagle uploads it: http://www.worldofkj.com/tools/Excel2BB.xls

Zing and Nebs - please go back and edit your posts to get rid of that last line, so that it doesn't screw up this thread. Thanks!

This is the same table I posted in the other thread, but this went through Excel and it's without color, which is not a problem.

Love it. :)
