2001 wasn't very loved at the time of its release.

Hmm... I realize the name of the thread is the worst Oscar wins ever, so it can be in any category right?
LOL so I guess almost every other winner in the Best Song category fits the bill.

It's gritty filmmaking at its best, and for the Academy to honor the standard feel good, boxing movie over a film like Taxi Driver is an insult to those innovative directors, actors, and screenwriters who push the envelope in order to leave the audience with a certain feeling... What's even more insulting is that Scorsese later made a boxing film BETTER than Rocky and it got nothin'.
I think Taxi Driver and Ragin Bull are decent films but not any better than maybe Casino. Rocky was a much better film, better acted, directed and written and it is proven so by it's box office, it's oscars and fans adoration. Youy may think that TD deserved the win, but you are mistaken.

LOL well, I like (somewhat) Out of Africa but it was up against The Color Purple (which I really, really like). The award that Out of Africa truly deserves would be for it's great Cinematography.
(HAHA as well-hated, you're giving Elia Kazan competition. )

I agree on the second one. What a slap in the face. All Pacino did was swear alot in Scent of a Woan. I disliked the movie, its original, and the acting in both.
I'll hesitate on the former. Not because I personally loves Shakespeare that much, but because the Oscar doesn't always have to be assigned to the austere lavish crushing war movie. While I've heard Private Ryan is above par for a war movie, Shakespeare is above par for a period piece/romcom, so I dunno.
I didn't like Beautiful Mind's win at all, either. And while Titanic was ok, L.A. Confidential, As Good as it Gets, all got shafted that year for it.

Rocky winning over Taxi Driver is a joke, same for Ordinary People winning over Raging Bull.
Actually, I could probably name about 10 Best Picture winners throughout the whole Oscar history that I consider to be deserving of that title. I consider most of the winning movies to be undeserving, especially in recent years.

Rocky's director winning over Sidney Lumet is an absolute shame. I can only theorize that there was so much awesome on the ballot, that the ones with taste split the vote between at least 3 of those canidates. But I will never be able to prove that one! Quote: same for Ordinary People winning over Raging Bull. I don't know if I agree with this one. Ordinary People is a pretty super drama. I would have given Scorsese director, but picture is a toss up. I think Oscar only ever gets it right very infrequently. Personally, I think the last two years have been the best choices, but that's just me. But whether or not I like the Best Picture and whether or not it is "undeserving" or unworthy is a separate matter.

I don't think it's about getting it wrong or right, but when you end up with five nominees, technically a movie can win with a little as 25% of the vote or even less, in a wost case scenerio. Almost Every time about 50% of people or more will disagree that the winner was the absolute best choice, so I don't necessarily judge if it's a good win or a bad win, just wether it's good enough to earn the title.
And often time, like with Ordinary People, even if it might not quite have been the best movie that year, the movie is deserving IMO.
With that said it is beyond me how ANYONE can think certain movies are the best that year. Braveheart, A Beautiful Mind, and Gladiator...for example.
