We just watched this foreign film named "Nine Queens" in Spanish class. Over the course of four days.

It's pretty damn good. It's a con movie with a twist at the end that'll get you to take a "second look" at the movie. While I couldn't watch the complete movie as class is only 45 minutes (After set up, we were only watching 30 minutes per day) long, I don't get the impression that my teacher paused the movie at exciting points that made me forget the bad. There really isn't any.

The only criticism I have of the film is that it moves too quickly, making some of the film seem ludicrous. We're immediately drawn into the characters that the transition into a scheme involving stamps seems to happen suddenly. It's developed, but I can't help questioning how these two main characters have so much trust in one another. On top of that, there's too much happening in the last fourth of the film.

Even though it's a thriller, the director only explores the genre at the very end. It's hard enough making a good thriller and it's even harder making a good thriller out of a couple thrilling scenes. This might be the best thing about Nine Queens. There's one part that makes Nine Queens what it really is, and it isn't done through guns or a Sean Penn-like performance. Because the filmmaker shows the heart of the two criminals with care (fantastic character development), the idea of these criminals being "planless" becomes thrilling. Yet, even while that's unpredictable and can cause a few heartbeats, it somehow remains entertaining...

This is easily an A that's hard not to enjoy. If I didn't love it, I:
1) Wouldn't have watched it past the first day. I've got enough tests as is that I would've studied.
2) Wouldn't be posting here. Come on. I like ranting, but these films are too unknown to make rants about. No one wants to read rants about a film no one's heard about.
3) Wouldn't have a second-viewing craving.

Rent it. If my awful, unorganized writing isn't enough, it's at 92% on RT (88 reviews) with an 8.0 rating from the Cream of the Crop

This came out on video about three years ago. I had been under the impression it was Argentine right? I've wanted to see it for a long time, and have only heard high praise along Bob le Flambuer lines. I definately will be checking this one out as soon as possible.

Isaw it when it first came out and really enjoyed it - but then I love the con-genre - cons within swindles within scams - Argentina's take on The Grifters, or a predeccessor to Matchstick Men...

It is a very good movie!

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I´m not a big fan of the "Con" genre, find it, funnily enough, very predictable - you just know there is going to e just twist after twist after twist and at the end everything was going to be the oppposite for what it was at the beginning, more or less - but in this case, even if I could guess the outcome, the ride was lots of fun. The characters were interesting, the situations thrilling - and quite realistic for this type of film - and It also has, under the "con-movie" appearance, many things to say about Argentina´s very much fucked up everyday economic reality.

nice...l've been looking for someone who's seen it...

anyway, l watched this after seeing the American remake (literally almost scene for scene) Criminal, in theaters last August or so. l really, really liked em both...but l cant give either of em more'n a B. The twist at the end...last 5 minutes or less...makes literally no sense. And it's not a matter of me not understanding...the is no sense to be made...no understanding to be had...of that ending. horrible, horrible, horrible ending...

but still good films.
