For some reason $50 million is disappointing to me after being hyped up by the Yahoo numbers which indicated more. Meh.

$50 million is still absolutely incredibly, don't get me wrong!!

PEACE, Mike ;)

Holy crap!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't belive that we for the first time ever seen a movie pass 50 million in one single day! Go ROTS!!! It certainly deserves it. Best film I've seen at the movies this year by far. All studio bosses are sighing in big relief since ROTS now have saved the whole industry BO slump.

Already 45th opening weekend, ahead of Matrix Revolutions...amazing, amazing number.

Slight dissapointment, as expected $100m-$120m. Oy well...

I didn't mean any disrespect or to say that this isn't already so freaking amazing, I just saw a higher Thursday based on the insanely large Yahoo numbers!

Hell yeah!

$150m 4-day is guaranteed. Spider-Man's first three days will be eclipsed in the Thurs-Sat period, and its Fri-Sun record may be in danger as well.

So if we take a similar model to Clones, then this should fall by about 20% on Friday, go up about 40% on Saturday and ease down about 25-30% on Sunday.

This means:

Thursday- 50 mill
Friday- 40 mill
Saturday- 52 mill
Sunday- 39 mill

Total of 181 mill.... is that possible?

Phew, it's an official number. Happily not an estimate. I'm still hoping that Fox doesn't make the same mistake they made with AotC(overestimating the first weekend).
It already grossed 16,10% of AotC total gross and 11,60% of TPM. I wish we had 10 of these days in a row.

So if we take a similar model to Clones, then this should fall by about 20% on Friday, go up about 40% on Saturday and ease down about 25-30% on Sunday.

This means:

Thursday- 50 mill
Friday- 40 mill
Saturday- 52 mill
Sunday- 39 mill

Total of 181 mill.... is that possible?

No. We have to take into account how much bigger RotS was in midnight showings. AotC had a slight increase from non-midnight Thursday to Friday, so RotS might do something like:

Friday $33m
Saturday $40m
Sunday $31m

3-day: $104m
4-day $154m

Edit: I can't do math. ](*,)

So if we take a similar model to Clones, then this should fall by about 20% on Friday, go up about 40% on Saturday and ease down about 25-30% on Sunday.

This means:

Thursday- 50 mill
Friday- 40 mill
Saturday- 52 mill
Sunday- 39 mill

Total of 181 mill.... is that possible?

No, it won't work that way because it got a higher percentage of Thursday gross from midnight showings. It should have about 35M on Friday and 110 for the weekend.

Okay, if you go exactly with what Clones did, then you have a 19% drop on Friday, a 28% increase on Saturday and a 22% decline on Sunday.

50 mill
40.5
51.85
40.45

182.8...again, is that possible?

Like Jeff was saying, you aren't taking into account the midnight screenings. With Clones, 16% of the Thursday gross was from the midnight screenings. With ROTS, 34% of this Thursday gross is from midnight screenings. You can't just take the same drops/increases as Clones here, mainly just for Friday.

PEACE, Mike ;)

Exactly in line with expectations from the Yahoo thread. Though the amount above 50 Million makes me suspicious. I expect an unusual drop today...

Heh baumer, anything is possible...but that what you wrote highly unprobable.

I'd say 28% drop on friday, 15% increase on saturday, and 25% drop on sunday.

That would be $108,480,060 beating Shrek 2's second position. :D

Fantastic!

Using the Drops for AOTC those numbers inckude midnight showings.

A $50m opening day is going to create huge amounts of buzz for the movie, and as we saw with Spider-Man and The Passion I think this has the potential to actually help the legs somewhat.

Gee, some folks still don't understand how the logic works. ROTS has a significantly higher midnight gross, and none of those showings is there for Friday. You have to subtract them and then do the Thursday-to-Friday comparison.
