zingy College Boy Z Joined: Mon Oct 11, 2004 8:40 pm Posts: 36662	Romeo and Juliet (1968) Romeo and Juliet Quote: Romeo and Juliet is a 1968 British-Italian cinematic adaptation of the William Shakespeare play of the same name. The film was directed and co-written by Franco Zeffirelli, and stars Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design; it was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. Sir Laurence Olivier spoke the film's prologue and epilogue and reportedly dubbed the voice of the Italian actor playing Lord Montague, but was never credited in the film, either for reciting the Prologue or for dubbing Lord Montague. (In fact, none of the voices dubbing other actors into English in Zeffirelli's films are ever credited. Yorgo Voragis, for instance, played Joseph in Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth, and was dubbed by another actor, but the actor doing the dubbing received no screen credit whatsoever.) Between this, his magnum opus, The Taming of the Shrew, and Hamlet, no one, not even Branagh, can rival his reputation as the king of Shakespeare film adaptors. Romeo and Juliet is superb. Zeffirelli picks up on so many of the finer qualities (and undertones) of the original sonnets, and accentuates them in a lush and seductive film. Both leads are beautiful and rise to the challenge of their roles. Gasping for air and for eachother in the whims of youthful exuberance and naivette. The aspects of young male commraderie are camped up, the directing is tight, and the landscape breathtaking. First time I saw this movie I was about 14, I wanted to jump both of them on the spot. Incredibly perfect casting on the part of Zeffirelli and Co.

It IS the best adaptation I've seen of the play, though, and I think casting young leads was a good decision, to 1) stay true to the play...at least the closest they've ever been and 2) the age WAS important in the play. It's important in understanding the characters and capturing the whole essence of the story. It might actually be close to an A- than a B+ for me.
