Adjusted Averages After Day 4

SW's dominance speaks for itself. Thing is, I have not included smaller films, and for older films like Indiana Jones, which would, undoubtedly, be high on the list, don't have entirely correct information.

However, one should not be left with any doubt as to the intensity of the Star Wars films' attraction. The figures clearly indicate that theatres were packed.

We will not likely ever see the kind of heavy concentration as suggested by ANH or ESB, simply because there are many more theatres now.

Notice The Passion's spectacular average. A mind-boggling number for a modern blockbuster of its magnitude. Ditto for Spider-Man, and of course, The Matrix Reloaded, whose box office performance, I believe, is severely underrated.

Noitve as well that, even adjusted, AOTC beats The Phantom Menace's 4-day average. In other words, it improved on it. Granted that AOTC's 4-day range was Thu-Sun, and TPM's Wed-Sat, but there is a clear sign of frontloadedness. I think Sith will be similar to it.

As a bit of trivia, ROTS would need a 4-day gross of $490-530m to match ANH's average. Needless to say, it is statisticly impossible for it to come anywhere close to that.

Estimated Admissions: After Day 4

Hats off to Reloaded and Spidey for some staggering numbers. The fact that those films were so big as to convince more than 20m people to visit the theatre in 4 days is simply amazing. This exceeds the total population of most countries in the world. Imagine all the people in New York, London, Paris, and Berlin going out to watch a movie.*

Low counts for ANH and ESB indicate much less frontloadedness and a more even run. Not surprisingly, those films had superb legs. ANH did not leave theatres until the 1980s.

Well the New York Times and the USA Today have posted stellar reviews for ROTS.

USA Today posted tonight. (they give it 3.5 stars out of 4)

Some quotes from the article

"There are major improvements in quality over the previous two films, notably the writing and the acting. Christensen and Natalie Portman as Senator (formerly Queen) Padmé Amidala, in particular, seem more comfortable and less stilted. McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi has grown more assured as well."

"The screenplay is tighter, the dialogue sharper and the pacing right on the mark. When you watch the first three films released more than two decades ago —A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi— they feel slower and plodding compared with Sith, which achieves just the right balance of emotional drama, suspense and action."

"This is the only one of the six movies rated PG-13, and there is some disturbing violence. The very young ones should be left at home. But for adults who may have avoided the series, this is the one to see. Even for non-fans, Revenge of the Sith is engrossing, and fans of the series will likely be over the moon — and into another galaxy — with this film."

A quote from the New York Times review also posted tonight.

"Revenge of the Sith" is the best of the four episodes George Lucas has directed. That's right: it's better than "Star Wars."

And it will to, literally.. As a matter of fact, I think every other movie this summer will be secondary compared to SITH including BATMAN and I still believe that SITH will still be swinging hard at the box office even a month from now and give BATMAN a hell of a run at the box office even after being out a month..

Well, as we near the start of the film, I think we are all going to up our predictions. I'll be updating mine today. But I can tell you it will be more than my original 360 mill.....

Lol same here. I wonder how it will come. Very likely that we are corrupted by fanboys and our projections will go far beyond good and evil \:D/

My FINAL PREDICTIONS

Okay, so here it goes. I think that this Star Wars is going to surprise us all and not only be a fantastci film, but a film that bucks the trend and surpassed more than the first sequel, much like ROTJ did.

Thursday- 39.5
Friday- 32.8
Saturday- 42.65
Sunday- 34.15
Total for first weekend- 149.10

Second weekend- 75 mill ( 4 day)

This should be clear of 225 mill by the end of the second weekend.

Domestic total- 410
Overseas- 490
Total- 900 mill

That is my final answer!! \:D/

I have questions before final prediction. Right now people are predicting huge numbers, and I'm wondering how feasable it is with running time. Isn't this a 2 and a half hour long movie? Also, theatre count doesn't say screens per theatre. How are you guys considering screens? Assuming around three per theatre (a show every 45 minutes) or less/more? How about work week and early morning numbers? I want to understand the considerations before making a final predict for this. I don't see how it could make 150 million in one weekend unless it shows every 1/2 hour, and that would require alot of screens in every theatre. Do you guys think theatres would shed all their other movies to make way for something like 5 screens in a 10 screen theatre? Because once they shed, they don't usually resurrect an old movie (even if it was doing decently) after wards. Wouldn't they be stuck with 5 screens of the same movie the following weekend(s) then?

I'm just trying to figure out. For every theatre that can pull five screens, there's going to be smaller ones that can only put it on one. If its two and a half hours long, you could hit in what 6 showings a day. That's quite a cap on what this could make, enthusiasm and good wom or no. I don't get it? :-k

I heard closer to 150 minutes.

As for Dolce's comments.....interesting points, but the theaters will drop any and all films that they don;t have to show to make room for this juggernaut. A 2 hour and 20-30 minute running time is not enough to derail this. I think just about ever show has a chance to be sold out in the peak hours and many of the other shows can be filled quite a bit. I think the film is tracking just about right.

A 2 hour and 20-30 minute running time is not enough to derail this. I think just about ever show has a chance to be sold out in the peak hours and many of the other shows can be filled quite a bit. I think the film is tracking just about right.

Ok. Well I looked up Reloaded and it had a running time of 138 minutes, which isn't short either. And it had 3600 theatres. So Sith is getting released in more. 3700 so far right? So they'll probably be on par. Maybe a teenie more for Sith because its getting more theatres?

As for Dolce's comments.....interesting points, but the theaters will drop any and all films that they don;t have to show to make room for this juggernaut. As much as I loved the first two Matrix films, there is just no comparisson to the SW films. Yes the Matrix fanboys propelled the sequel to huge numbers, but SW is just sW. I cannot tell you how much I and others like me want to see this film. I think it will gross just about 40 mill on it's first day...this of course includes the midnight showings, but I think Sw will annihilate that.

Also take into account the films ratings The Matrix Reloaded was rated R so anyone under 17 not going with an adult was turned away Sith is PG-13 so anyone with the time and money can see it.

Nah. I think it comes down to raw capacity and volume. All the matrix stuff was sold out. All the star wars stuff will be sold out. Doesn't matter if more people want to see sith, it matters how many more seats theatres will accomodate for it. 3600 to 3700 isn't that big a difference. If sith gets 4000, that'll be a difference, and if theatres hold it on more screnes than matrix.
