BJ, I love The Matrix Reloaded (if it hasn't been made clear at this point...). And, before, I always DID get mad that the extra $5m was never included in the opening day gross, because I always wanted it to be the record holder. But, I'm not mad. The movie did fantastic. It broke records even the Spider-Man movies couldn't do. That's how big it really was.
Also, I'm a huge Star Wars fan, too. I'm a fanatic, but when it comes to predicting, I like to think realistically (most of the time), and not wild. A $50m opening day is not impossible, but there's a VERY slim chance of that happening. I think around $39-42m is the most likely opening day number.

I am a fan of the Matrix franchise and I wouldn't love it more than to have an R-rated flick holding the record, BUT IT IS NOT. The End.
We have to go by what the industry goes. And in the industry it is not considered $42.5 million.
That aside, SW: ROTS won't have 10 PM shows.

It is no etched in stone within the industry.
It's actually been subject to dispute.
The Matrix Reloaded holds the record for the largest amount garnered within the first 24 hours, as well as the largest total after day 1.
Spider-Man 2 holds the record for the largest gross in a day.
My charts are organized accordingly, as would be BOM's.

But you're not in the industry
When SW: ROTS makes more than $38 million on Thursday, it will be proclaimed the biggest Thursday ever. If it mkaes more than $40.4 million, it will be proclaimed the biggest opening day ever.

But Variety is, and they have previously raised the issue.

I wouldn't use Variety for box-office purposes.
Personally, I think it's a very blurry line. I'd like the money to count towards Thursday, but the consensus of the majority is that it doesn't. I believe something similar happened to Austin Powers in Goldmember and some others (I think T3 was among them).

Well, for general puposes, SM2's figure is indeed the biggest opening day.
Matrix Reloaded officially opened on Thursday, and it's Thursday gross was $37.5m, that is without doubt.
However, by the end of Thursday, it had been in release for 26 hours, not 24 hours, due to the Thu. 10pm showings. Within it's first 24 hours, I'm positive it made more than SM2's first 24 hours.
However, that is a technicality.
As you said, SW3 needs to beat Matrix Reloaded's $37.5m to claim the biggest Thu, and SM2's $40m to claim biggest opening day.

With 3700 theaters, that pleases all of us SW geeks. This changes everything in terms of gross. I think this is going to be massive.
A 40 mill opening day is all but guaranteed.
Thursday- 40.5 mill
Friday- 33 mill
Saturday- 42.5
Sunday- 33.8
4 Day Total- 149.8 mill
This has a great shot at surpassing 200 mill by the 11th day.

Sorry it took so long, I actually got the invite awhile back (and registered) but with all that has been going on (all good) I forgot until I was looking through some of the old B.O.M posts in the reel live forum and they were talking about ancient posters people missed and BKB, Baumers and your name came up and I was like ‘OH, Shite I forgot. So I high tailed over hear. How’s tricks
