 Felicity Huffman
It's looking more and more like a real possibility that she could end up being nominated, and with Desperate Housewives being the hottest thing on TV right now the release date for the film could not be better.
The film (Transamerica) already did really well at t he Berlin Film Festival and now won the Tribeca Film Festival Award for best actress over a week ago.

I don't know. I haven't heard that much about it except for here. I've never seen a nom for a transvestite character either. Might be a bit much for the academy. Seems like it will be popular in all the independant awards, but she plays a lead, and there's no way she's getting best actress. Had she been this character in a supporting role, her chances would have gone up a little bit. In general though, I think the content of this movie is not Academy lovin' type stuff.

You say a nom for a transvestite character may be stretch for the Academy.
Didn't they nominate Hillary Swank for playing a hermaphrodite? And she WON!!!
I think if she is really great, it's a real possibility, though I admit I haven't heard of it either.

Nope, not the same role at all. The gender question didn't play out as performative. Last I checked, but you guys might know better, she actually dressed in drag for this role? I'll give kudos to the academy is they still go for it. But mostly, I just think this movie is an indie, and will fall far below the Academy radar. How great stuff like American Splendor was, and still barely got notice. And that broke 5 million. Transamerica doesn't look like its going to break 5 million, unless maybe there is a huge tv fanbase that will up the numbers. That I might not be sure of, it could change how this movie is received.
Stuff like Being Julia really astounded me with that nom. What did it make, 2 million? No one had even heard of it. So it does occasionally happen that a microscopic movie gets picked up by the Academy, but otherwise transamerica has no chance.

also, Hilary Swank was not playing a hermaphrodite. Just a sexually confused character.
I still think the movies are comparable though. It looks like it will go the same way with the critics, and with enough buzz it could perform equally well at the box office. Plus there are very few people who don't know who Felicity Huffman is right now, so that will get her more attention.
It's an equally complex role. She's basically playing...a man.
I don't know if it will lead to a nomination, don't know quite enough aobut the movie yet, but it brings some excitement to the race.

It's possible if enough critics get behind the role. Plus, isn't she married to William H. Macy? Stuff like that always helps.

Right you are with Davidson.
I'm not sure about Huffman, it's possible if the field is weak like last year.

But The Crying Game also had noms for picture, director, screenplay and actor. I don't think Hoffman's film will have the same momentum. It's possible she could get a nomination, but unlikely.

Hey guys, there was an article in the times that mentioned her today too. It said transamerica was more dramedy (comic elements). Now I really don't know where I sit on her following. DOes the Acedemy have a tiff with TV? WHo knows. I think it would have been more probably if she'd been up for best supporting, but it does seem like she's generating some buzz.

Helen Hunt won for As Good As It Gets while she was also starring in Mad About You so it's possible for a 'TV actress' to win. I'm not sure about this though. Could go either way. As Good As It Gets had a lot of nominations, including picture and Hunt was getting to act with Jack Nicholson. I don't see that happening for this film.

I think it will depend on wether it leans comedy or drama. If it's more comedy (As Good as it Gets, He;len Hunt) she could get help from the Globes.
If it's more drama (The Good Girl, Jennifer Aniston), the category might be too crowded for her to be remembered.
She's been a consiste4ntly good TV actress though (Out of Order, Sports Night, Desperate Housewives) so i do think she's capable of delivering an award worthy performance if the role is right.

This says it's a Disney film... yet there seems to be no wide distribution.
Until that status changes, and it gets a normal indie release, then I would say this has no chance.

I saw the movie at Tribeca... She was pretty good in it, I thought. I liked the movie as well.
Actually, Hillary Swank won an Oscar for playing exactly the same thing, a transexual, but a "female to man" one instead of the opposite, which Felicity plays here. So I´d say that the fact that she is playing a trannie is not enough to rule her out...
There are other things working against her though: Unlike Swank, this is not so much the "victim" role, and the movie definitely has some comedy in it (Some of it very broad and a bit out of place, for example in the character of her mother, played by the anyway great Fionnula Flanagan). It is dramatic at points but I don´t remember many "Oscary" moments, maybe a couple... SPOILERS She doesn´t get beat up or dies, unlike Hanks or Swank. She also has a quite happy ending, no apologies, no more suffering. Hollywood is confortable with gay/trans characters as long as they can identify with their suffering and are able to point out the rednecks, so over the top that it is pretty clear that the academy members, as an audience, are not part of them. A winning trans/gay is another matter END SPOILERS
Also, the film is an indie not only in budget. There are a few things I am not sure how the older members of the Academy are going to take, like the ending - specially what happens with the character of the son, and his sexual ambiguity, not Hollywood at all - or a few scenes - SPOILER SPOILER like one in which you actually see Hufmann peeing with a really realistic prostetic penis END SPOILERS
I don´t know. It depends on the competence, I think she could get a nom but a win... not likely, methinks.

... And it seems the movie has been bought by the Weinstein brothers... and we all know how well they market films for the Oscars... so just like that, her chances suddenly increased quite a bit, IMO.

She's a great actress. I love her in Desperate Housewives. I hope she gets nominated for some award.
