I, too, think that its Oscar prospects have been cut short by its release date and I just don't understand the motive in this early May release amidst all the blockbuster fare.

But there are a few things that are working towards this early date....

1) It will be on DVD come awards season and much easier to access and watch
2) Having absolutely no front-runner for this year's awards (as opposed to last year's buzzed Aviator) this could take the lead for most of the time until December rolls around and if nothing as good comes along, it's pretty good from there on.
3) We haven't had a havey-weight pre-winter release nod in a while and they might want to spice things up.
Remember Gladiator (which won) and Erin Brockovich released in February!! (by the way I'm not counting Seabiscuit as a heavy-weight nom, cuz it really had no chances.)

It would be nice to see the DVD play to it's favor. Regardless, I do believe that there will be at least one of the 3 (Bullock, Dillon, or Cheadle) who will have a very good chance of being recognized.

I'll post this here, too. Reviews are starting to pour in. EW, Rolling Stone, and Variety all like it.

Now that more reviews are pouring in, its tomatoemeter is climbing.
I think it will get close to, if not pass, 90%

Considering how controversial people are saying this film is and knowing the themes and topics it explores, I'm surprised it's getting this good of a reception among of the critics.

I'm seeing it 2mor0 night at 7 or 7:30

It does have a new bad review that hasn't been counted from the New York times, but I'm surprised as well. I expected a love/hate thing, with the love winning out at about 70%, but I think it'll be higher than that now. I'm seeing it at 4:45PM , most likely. If I can get done earlier, I'll see the 1:20 show, but it's doubtful.

So? For everyone that's seen (seeing) this tonight. Anyone have an acting chance? MOst likely a supporting role because its an ensemble cast, but do you think (regardless of personal sentiment towards the movie) that someone stood out enough that (s)he will be remembered come January?

I think Matt Dillon was the standout.

Bookmark this, not a single nomination. The only thing of note was seeing these actors play against type. That in itself isn't nomination worthy IMO.

I don't think there will be any acting nominations either. No one was in it long enough to be remebered at Oscar time.

Not that any of them weren't good enough for a nad, but I aree, they were probably in it, all of them, too little.

But above that, I think thi is going to be one of those few amazing films, like KB last year, to completely miss out on nominations because it's just not Academy-type and released too early.

I think the only thing that might have benefitted from a later release was maybe one or two supporting nods and a screenplay nod.

I think the best shot it has is Director if the category is weak. It is his directorial debut and it could be the films overall award.

Who knows, it might score a nom in an actor category. I'd certainly go with my opinion before I would go with anybody's that has embarrassed himself in previous awards predictions...

I'd agree Matt Dillon is the only one who'd get an acting nomination, but na guys, I'm not feeling any acting nominations. Haggis could've for the direction, but that's only if this is the only "Best director and not Best Picture" nominee. I'd say any nominations are doubtful, which is something of a shame, as it is really a great movie.

Thought I would bump this and give credit where credit is due.

In the nature of trying to say "all in good fun", but not really meaning it :)

Here's to you Mav.

Yeah, props to you Mav, it was definitely a good call. It's kind of funny how the people that predicted it would do well at the Oscars were the people who loved it, whereas more of the doubters ended up being the ones that hated it.

Why is it funny? I hate the film, its winning was like my worst Oscar nightmare. Once it got nomianted I forsaw the win, but you know since i hate Crash I wanted to believe BBM could overtake it. We never want the filsm we disliek to win, and jsut like one's love for a film (Mav and Wlak the LIne) can cloud our judgement so can one's hatred.

Heh wow I can't get my thoughts out clearly today can I? I wasn't trying to put down the people who dislike Crash, and trust me, as someone who gave a D+ to Chicago, I know how much it sucks when a movie you loathe is named "the best film of the year" by the biggest awards ceremony out there. I was looking at it both ways really, it just so happened that this time the people who were big fans happened to be right.

When Crash got nominated, I knew it would win, because I never believed in BBM, it just didn't seem like it would happen. Howeer, till Crash was nominated, with every fiber of my being I wanted to believe the Academy would ignore this crap film...it was more my wanting then logic. And really right before the OScar noms came out Crash was growing strong. Crash winnig is not on par with the shock of Polanksi or Adrian Brody or Marcia Gay Harden.

Not quite sure why you would single me out for Walk the Line when 99% of everyone picked it, and it was a legitimate snub that shocked everyone. CNN did a story about it. The hosts of E! immediately mentioned their shock at it not getting nominated. It also had the guild support and a Golden Globe win. My judgement wasn't clouded, everything pointed to a nomination, but these things sometimes happen. Maybe you meant to say something about the King Kong supporters or something instead and accidentally mentioned me because you missed me and were thinking about me?

I like to set trends.

Notice how film sites and pundits across the globe followed my disdain for Crash.

In good company.

But loyal, wouldn't you rather be in the company of the Oscar winners? It feels awfully darn good, let me tell you. I really do feel a bit bad that you haven't been able to enjoy things at all with the winner being your favorite or one that you loved in the short history of WOKJ. I feel greatful that I've been in this position two years running now. Million Dollar Baby and Crash. That's a spicy meatball!

I'm going for the trilogy, so I fully expect that whatever my favorite serious film of the year is will once again win the Oscar next year. It's better on this side of the fence, so I hope that you like whatever my favorite contender is in 2006.

If being in that company means enjoying trite hollow films, I'll pass ;)

I take great comfort in knowing that outside of a few Haggisheads, most people who follow the Oscars seem to know how shitty and utterly forgettable M$B and Crash are (you can already feel Crash slipping into obscurity).

I hope for the sake of the AMPAS they pick a film next year that's actually worthy. Your side of the fence seems to coincide with declining Oscar interest and that's not ok.

Not true.

In fact, with no film over 80 million, ratings were still higher than they were with The Two Towers.

Nobody follows the Oscars more than the academy, and it's been my experience that most of the people who follow the Oscars don't know their stuff. Some were actually picking King Kong. :neener:
