 Lyrics from some Songs that meant something to me
We all have songs that we love to listen to. We all know lyrics to songs that are profoundly deep.
But then there are those songs that are good .. but just that .. or atleast you think till one day, you're forced to listen to what is being said. Usually, all the lyrics of the song, though good are just that .. good but theres always that one verse, or line, that effects you in ways unimaginable. These words for some reason hit you, and they hit you hard
These are some of mine. I will continue to update this thread with stuff that meant something, either to me, or how it said something about life to me, so simply.
Collective Soul - December
There are actually quite a few lines in this song that made me do a double take. To me, this song sounds of betrayal. And in its sarcasm, its able to beautifully put into a few words feelings that one may think (or atleast I thought) it will take forever to pour out.
Following are the relevant lyrics:
Why drink the water from my hand? Contagious as you think I am
--
December promise you have unto me December whispers of treachery
--------------------------------------------------------------
No excuses - Alice In Chains
This song is a mellow song and once I actually followed the lyrics, made me think about the past and the choices I had made, how things had turned out and how I'm in this never ending journey called life itself.
Relevant Lyrics
Everyday it’s something Hits me all so cold Find me sittin’ by myself No excuses, then I know
The following actually is something that relates to my life a lot. I've often mentioned how I've lived most of my life away from people I love and care about. Yet, we're all now living different lives and each of us has grown as a person, apart from the other one .. to the point where all we share was a past and an understanding. These words echo how I still feel about them (from the same song)
You my friend I will defend And if we change, well i Love you anyway
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Weeping Song - Nick Cave
This song, is a weird one. If one has seen the video to this only once and has heard this song, it doesnt sound much like Nick Cave and though its very serious, it doesnt sound so. Ofcourse, upon hearing this again and again, theres something very tragic about it. Why this song means something to me is because it has some very powerful lyrics yet I do not know where the song itself comes from, what compelled him to write it ...
Relevant Lyrics
I'm compelled to post the entire song here. Theres not 1 thing that is more powerful than the other, somehow the whole song together sends out a powerful message:
Go son, go down to the water And see the women weeping there Then go up into the mountains The men, they are weeping too. Father, why are all the women weeping? They all are weeping for their men Then why are all the men there weeping? They are weeping back at them.
This is a weeping song A song in which to weep While all the men and women sleep. This is a weeping song But I won't be weeping long.
Father why are all the children weeping? They are merely crying son. O, are they merely crying father? Yes, true weeping is yet to come.
This is a weeping song A song in which to weep While all the little children sleep. This is a weeping song But I won't be weeping long.
O father tell me are you weeping? Your face seems wet to touch. O then I'm so sorry father I never thought I hurt you so much.
This is a weeping song A song in which to weep While we rock ourselves to sleep. This is a weeping song But I won't be weeping long No. I won't be weeping long
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
The song itself is beautiful but a certain part of it again, makes me reflect on life and my dreams. The lyrics talk about when one is a child. A reference is made to a fleeting glimpse. This glimpse is actually not really a glimpse according to me but more so something the child held dear, some dream this child had .. before he entered the real world, yet in the course of life, its nothing more than a fleeting glimpse. The part of the song refers to how when we grow up, there are so many dreams that we made and let go without even realizing it until one stops for a sexond and takes notice
Relevant Lyrics
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, Out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look but it was gone. I cannot put my finger on it now. The child is grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb.
Thats it for now. I'll be filling this thread up as time goes by.

Jars Of Clay "Worlds Apart"
I am the only one to blame for this. Somehow it all adds up the same. Soaring on the wings of selfish pride. I flew too high and like Icarus I collide with a world I try so hard to leave behind to rid myself of all but love to give and die.
To love you - take my world apart
To need you - I am on my knees
Can I be the one to sacrifice or grip the spear and watch the blood and water flow?

Coasterman, those are amazing and I'm pleasantly surprised you've heard Jars Of Clay. Sadly I've only heard one and that is flood. But the song is amazing

Novaicaine for the Soul - Eels
This is a very lighthearted song .. or atleast it feels it. Ofcourse, when I looked deeper, it almost made me feel like the band was crying out for help!
I love the metaphor used in this song to describe that emptiness we all feel and how he refers to the thing that takes the emptiness away as novaicaine. Its just .. such a perfect comparison.
Novovaine for the soul You better give me something To fill the hole
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Fell on Black Days - Soundgarden
I can pretty much quote the whole song for you here. I often feel like this song. It seems like life is a struggle, where we're always taking steps to get something right and life comes and smacks you on the face and before you know it, pushes you one step back. Its about a guy climbing some ladder in his mind only to fall down again and again. he knows what the right approach is (determinded by the line (Don't you lock up something that you wanted to see fly).
Relevant Lyrics
Whatsoever I’ve feared has come to life Whatsoever I’ve fought off became my life Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile Sunspots have faded And now I’m doing time Cause I fell on black days
------
So don’t you lock up something that you wanted to see fly Hands are for shaking No, not tying No, not tying
I sure don’t mind a change But I fell on black days How would I know That this could be my fate
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So far Away - Stabbing Westwards
This song took me completely by surprise and if you've heard it too, I wont be shocked if it has the same effect on you. The singer has one of the most powerful voices I'v ever come across and almost every word in this song is sung with so much emotion, its unimaginable.
What makes the lyrics so strong. They speak of feelings when you feel like your relationship with someone is just deteriorating yet you havent come to the point where you openly come out and admit it. You want to scream, you want to shout but you dont cause saying it just makes it official, that theres a problem and things might turn for the worse. Yet both people involved know the problem exists, and care enough to want to rectify, they want to maintain the relationship, yet both arent ready to say anything, and the relationship continues deteriorating.
This is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. Be sure to check it out cause hes able to sum up soooooo much in just a few simple words.
Each night I feel the distance that has grown between us Open up as lonely as the space between the stars I wish that I could find a way To smash my fist right through these walls Of ugliness and emptiness And gently touch your face
----------
As you lie silently beside me choking back your tears I wonder if you recognize That silence now defines us Desperately I try to fight this overwhelming sense That I may never find The strength to change How hopeless we've become
----------
We need to find a way to break this silence that's between us So I scream your name But every time that I touch you You feel so far away And every time that you need me I feel so far away And every time that you reach out You feel me pull away
Thats it for now.
Hope I'm not boring all of you.

wow you've heard of jars of clay? They're out of my hometown and my dentist is the father of them. Flood is a very good song as well. Crazy Times is also good. If you like flood you'll like crazy times.

In The End - Linkin Park
Its a really good song, if heard independantly from most of their other songs.
Relevant Lyrics
I really like how this song plays upon the whole concept of time.
time is a valuable thing Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings Watch it count down to the end of the day The clock ticks life away
--------------
And thats so true of life.
It reminds of all the things that just seemed so important. My last day of school. A friendship you thought would never end, 3 years to watch the entire LOTR saga. and now:
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory

Jill Scott "One is the magic #"
No hay nadie mas que yo, uno es el numero magico
En vida y en muerte, uno es todo...comprende
If i multiply 2 times 2 is it really, really 4 me (la 6x)
And if i add 5 to get 9 minus 8 that just leaves me (me 8x)
So many times i define my pride through somebody else's eyes (la da da, la da)
Then i looked inside and found my own stride, i found the lasting love for me
If i'm searching for my spirituality passionately i must begin with me
There's just me...one is the magic number 2x
If i add myself unto myself multiplied times you and yours and you again
There's just me
And if i divide 8 billion, 48 trillion, 98 zillion
There is... there is just me
If i subtract one plus me to the 5th degree, use any theorem
There's just me
There's just me...one is the magic number 2x
Me, me, me, me...

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.
There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who stand looking. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This song means so much to me. I absolutely love it. The bolded part really gets to me. It's my all-time favorite verse.
Great thread, bABA. When I moved away from where I used to live to go to school here in Meddy, I left behind a girl that I am pretty sure was (is) the love of my life. It absolutely killed me to do it, but I had to get out of the situation I was in with my family. To this day, I still think about her everday, and when ever I listen to these two songs, there are certain parts that just totally destroy me. I've bolded them below. The band is called Saetia (say-sha), and the two songs are Venus and Bacchus and One Dying Wish.
Venus and Bacchus:
Close my eyes
Pull my heart strings
Pour my tears from your hands
'Connections are never easy,' you said
Empty words
Empty soul
I believe that we are afraid of one another
And I, I believe that you have died within me I fade from myself I miss you again I fade from myself I miss you again What have we got?
Bloody, broken, and hidden away
I seek the rope from which we will hang
Or so it seems
The dance of flesh on flesh has rendered us blind
I look into your eyes, I look into stone It's better to be stepped on than left all alone So now I choke on yesterday when I was someone And I wonder where 'forever' went And how our 'everything' came undone I opened my eyes and the heaven beneath us died
One Dying Wish
Because it cuts so deep To see myself wishing upon melting stars
I cut the cord
I finally give in
Beyond visions of wretched smiles
And the dread that they've befriended
I have seen an end to you and I When did "we" begin?
And this warped sense of being that I embrace must exist
And we with whole hearts yet broken words we dream of wisdom
But I yearn only for you You will destroy me with words that you have never spoken
I've drawn a picture of us
Twisted within yet below this world
I absorb life from portraits
As long as we remain abreast of one another we will never meet each other As long as we whisper to one another we will never fully hear each other As long as my eyelids are weighed down by desire And one dying wish - that I will never know you when you appear
Jimmy Eat World - 23
Despite having the worst band name ever, JEW's lyrics have always been of the emotive variety. This song in particular, though, has several lines that I just love. Everytime I hear them the hair on my arm stands up. I can't really pin down why it makes me feel that way, but it's just emotionally overwhelming.
I felt for sure last night That once we said goodbye No one else will know these lonely dreams No one else will know that part of me
I'm still driving away
And I'm sorry every day I won't always love these selfish things
I won't always live...
Not stopping...
It was my turn to decide
I knew this was our time
No one else will have me like you do No one else will have me, only you
You'll sit alone forever If you wait for the right time What are you hoping for? I'm here I'm now I'm ready
Holding on tight
Don't give away the end The one thing that stays mine
Amazing still it seems
I'll be 23
I won't always love what I'll never have I won't always live in my regrets
Hey now, little speedyhead,
The read on the speedmeter says
You have to go to task in the city
Where people drown and people serve.
Don't be shy. Your just deserve
Is only just light years to go.
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
Ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way.
Watch the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
The ocean is the river's goal,
A need to leave the water knows
We're closer now than light years to go.
I have got to find the river,
Bergamot and vetiver
Run through my head and fall away.
Leave the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
There's no one left to take the lead,
But I tell you and you can see
We're closer now than light years to go.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
Fall into the ocean.
The river to the ocean goes,
A fortune for the undertow.
None of this is going my way.
There is nothing left to throw
Of Ginger, lemon, indigo,
Coriander stem and rose of hay.
Strength and courage overrides
The privileged and weary eyes
River poet search naivete.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
All of this is coming your way
Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb
O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb.
~~~~~~~~~~
That's another song that gets to me too. Pink Floyd does some amazing lyrics.

Here goes, I'm going lyrics for some of the songs I listen to that I really respond to, I highlighted my favorite passages:
Two By Nina Simone:
1) Sugar In My Bowl:
I want a little sugar
in my bowl
I want a little sweetness
down in my soul
I could stand some lovin'
Oh so bad
I feel so funny and I feel so sad
I want a little steam on my clothes Maybe I can fix things up so they'll go Whatsa matter Daddy Come on, save my soul I need some sugar in my bowl I ain't foolin' I want some sugar in my bowl
You been acting different
I've been told
Soothe me
I want some sugar in my bowl
I want some steam
on my clothes
Maybe I can fix things up so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on save my soul
I want some sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin'
I want some -suger- in my bowl.
2) Turn Me On:
Like a flower waiting to bloom like a light bulb in a dark room I am sitting here waiting for you to come home and turn me on
like the desert waiting for rain
like a school kid waiting for spring
I am sitting here waiting for you to come back home and turn me on
My poor heart, it's been so dark
since you've been gone
after all you're the one who turned me off
now you're the only one that can turn me back on
Oh,
my hi-fi's waiting for a new tune
and my glass is waiting for some fresh ice-cubes
I'm just sitting here waiting for you to come on
back home and turn me own.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some by Leanard Cohen:
1) Chelsea Hotel #2
I remember you
well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Those were the reasons and that was New York,
we were running for the money and the flesh.
And that was called love for the workers in song
probably still is for those of them left.
Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you,
I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."
And then you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you,
I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.
I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best, I can't keep track of each fallen robin. I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, that's all, I don't even think of you that often.
2)Suzanne:
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.
Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.
Hehe. Is it okay if I add a disclaimer saying you have to hear the songs to understand?

Boston and St. John’s
Released June 1999
(written by Doyle)
Girl, don’t tell me that it’s morning
Can we keep the curtains drawn
I haven’t given you fair warning
But our ship, she sails at dawn
Chorus
It’s true I must be going but I swear I won’t be long
There isn’t that much ocean between Boston and St. John’s
I’m a rover and I’m bound to sail away
I’m a rover can you love me anyway?
And if some suitor comes approaching
Will you let him through your door
And what if I return half broken
Will you still want me anymore?
Chorus
Bridge
Close your eyes and dream
Tell me what you see
Tell me what you want
Just tell me that you’ll wait for me
... I can't even begin on this song without really getting emotional
