Ep 1 made $430M, and in some circles it's STILL considered a failure.

:fishing:

I wouldnt mind to have a 430 Mio Dollar failure in my life :???: And if it happens:Wayne and so long to the art direction.

It's "failure" was that it didn't unseat Titanic. EVERYBODY thought PM would unseat Titanic.

(Creative failure aside. ;) )

I've been thinking about the box office of the last two SW movies and come to some conclusions.

1. PM made a lot of money just on the hype, (which, to this day, remains the loudest of any hype campaign ever hyped.) There was a genuine, pent up, 16 year demand to see that movie. It was a demand so great, that this film made 350 million before some people could deal with the fact that it was DRECK ( ) (Hell, I'm one of them. It took me a second viewing just to deal with how much I hated it. It took my brother a 3rd!) To this day, I believe that if PM hadn't sucked, it would have beat Titanic. Yes, I do believe that.

2. AOTC suffered a considerable drop off from PM. I think three factors caused that.

a. The fact that PM sucked put a small squeeze on the fanbase.
b. AOTC also sucked.
c. Spiderman.

SITH has no Spiderman. Other then Madagascar, there's nothing there.

If it doesn't suck, (hold your breath, because it is possible that it won't,) it has no barrier (other then PM/AOTC backlash) to some amazing numbers. If it doesn't suck, it should certainly be able to beat Shrek II. I think SITH's basement (meaning if it's more of the same PM/AOTC drivel,) is $320 million.

(And no, the PG-13 won't hurt SITH. It probably helps. All three LOTR films were PG-13. Passion was an R.)

TPM had amazing legs for a blockbuster. I won't deny that a lot of people found it disappointing, but stop perpetuating the misguided view that everyone hated it.

AotC suffered a nearly identical drop percentage-wise as ESB did from ANH. Clearly ESB and ANH must have sucked too. There are two major factors you don't really consider here, although the first is somewhat related to Spider-Man. TPM was one of the biggest event movies of all time. It was a movie that people just had to see. This also became true for ANH. In both cases due to the sheer magnitude of what the first movie did it was impossible for the sequel to have quite the same "must-see" cultural phenomenon status. Admittedly, ANH was an even bigger phenomen than TPM, making it harder for ESB to match up to its predecessor than for AotC. So TPM not being as well received and the Spider-Man effect (as S-M becamse the must-see event of that summer) also contributed to the dropoff. Finally, AotC was a much less kid-friendly movie than TPM, cutting down on repeat viewings from that demographic. This was also true of ESB compared to ANH, although the contrast in kid-friendliness was less dramatic there.

I do agree with you that lack of competition helps RotS. But I think saying "if it doesn't suck, it should certainly be able to beat Shrek II" is ridiculous. Of course, based on your attitude you very well might think it does suck even if 95% of viewers like it. I don't know why I still bother debating how well-received the prequels have been, but the common perception that everyone hates them is utter hogwash, despite what Internet bashers and the media would have you believe.

And here I thought I'd made a really POSITIVE SITH post, praising it's box office potential and my belief that it might not suck up the place. ](*,)

1. First, about my "attitude". I am at this moment more positive and open to ROTS then I have ever been. Honestly, I do think there is hope that I might like it. You are taking my "attitude" way too seriously, as I peppered my post with smilies and razzes because I am well aware my feelings about these films are a MINORITY in this forum. (Which does not make me shy about expressing mine.)

2. PM made a lot of it's money on the Star Wars name alone. I stand by that belief. It isn't universally hated, but it isn't universally loved either.

3. There is no comparison whatsoever between ANH and PM as a cultural phenomena. ANH snuck up and tapped us on the shoulder. PM came marching in with it's own brass band.

4. Perhaps your argument about ESB's take vs. ANH is valid. But those films were released in a different box office era then we are living in now. (And they DEFINETLY do not suck!) But in the current era, we had Shrek II, a sequel, making nearly twice what the original made. We have Spiderman II making almost what the original made, even though for both the original Shrek and Spiderman made a lot of money. And we have the three LOTR's each making more then the one before it. I don't think that AOTC's huge drop off from PM was a given. Which brings me back to Shrek II. If that film, which was funny, cute, enjoyable, but not really a cultural event, can make $400+ million, there is no reason why a STAR WARS movie shouldn't.

So let's all join hands and sing kumbayah. \:D/

Ok,

either:

1) $310m

or

2) $450m

I really don't ...know!

But, if May continues to suck, SW3 will take in all the money.

Wow!
I made next to StarWarsEpisode7 and ChipMunky the highest prediction.
However, I don't expect it to make that number, but I'll stick with it. (I predicted the same for AotC)

290 million. Heck HP3 had the fourth highest opening day an it still made under 250 million. I could see the same thing happening with SW EP3.

final prediction

Opening Day: $50m
Opening Weekend (3-Day): $116m
Opening Weekend (4-Day): $166m
Memorial Day Weekend (3-Day): $70m
Memorial Day Weekend (4-Day): $90m
Domestic Total: $400m
Overseas Total: $600m
Worldwide Total: $1b

50m opening day :-s I think the highest it can score is 48m and even that is streching the limit.

I think the recent box office sets up Sith nicely to explode on teh scene. There last fefw weeks have given us nothing to rush out to see. This makes Sith the first must see movie of the summer. I am taking the morning of teh 19th off of work so I can go on the 18th at midnight. This is going to be the event of the early summer and it's opening weekend will be enormous.
