Well, here it is.

baumer started the thread on Mojo, but doesn't seem he'll join here soon.

Post your predictions, discuss them, talk about movie. Would prefer that this would be spoiler-free thread though, but if you're insisting in some spoilers, would be good if you make the text 'highlight to read', meaning choose font colour to be white. (color=white)spoilers(/color), and replace () with [].

Previous episodes box office:

Star Wars (A New Hope) - $460,998,007
The Empire Strikes Back - $290,475,067 (-37%)
Return of the Jedi - $309,306,177 (+6.48%)
The Phantom Menace - $431,088,301 (+39.37%)
Attack of the Clones - $310,676,740 (-27.93%)

I am upping my prediction now. With all the hype surrounding this, I am going to say:

Opening day- 33 mill
Three day- 99 mill
Five Day- 144 mill
Total- 360 mill

Here's an interesting little tidbit...

http://imdb.com/news/sb/2005-05-02/#2

Lucas Worries 'Sith' Will Flop

With the final Star Wars film, Revenge of the Sith, not so far, far away, Darth Vader has landed on the cover of Time magazine, which assures fans that they will be breathing a lot easier than Vader when the movie opens on May 19. Critic Richard Corliss forecasts that there will be a "a sigh of relief that Lucas found the skill to make a grave and vigorous popular entertainment, a picture that regains and sustains the filmic Force he dreamed up." For his part, George Lucas tells Time that, while he believes "it turned out as well as I could have hoped," he worries that audiences may not think so. "I have a feeling this one is going to be sort of like the last one in terms of some people like it, some people hate it. And like everyone who makes movies, I'm always convinced the next one will be a flop. So right now I'm thinking it probably won't make any money and will be considered a failure."

Opening Day 35
4 Day weekend 155
Domestic Gross 320

Beyond all the hype, the FX shots look much better than recent science fiction movies. I saw one shot of Padme against a city backdrop and it was the first time I can recall seeing a futuristic cityscape like that which looked believably real.

edit: thanks for the correction Lecter, I could have sworn someone said 5 day in the posts above.

MAV,

This film has as much of a chance of being a failure as XXX2 has of grossing 600 million dollars to unseed Titanic as number 1. =D>

Hey BKB,

I remember when Last Crusade opened and George said he would happy with a 12 mill open, and he basically almsot more than tripled it. George always downplays his chance at success, but we all know that this film is going to be huge. I have seen the latest trailer and it sends chills through my bones. When Vader is rising and you see Anakin and Obi going at it, it just seems surreal. I think that this film will surprise everyone and really has a chance to do more than Spiderman.

But now I'm actually surprised...I thought your predictions were based on 5 days..So you expect an opening day of $35 million and then a 3-day gross of $120 million, bigger than Spider-Man?

I mean The Matrix Reloaded had an opening day of $37.5 million, on a Thursday and managed only $91 million 3-day, AOTC had $30 million on Thursday and managed $80 million 3-day. I don't see how it can start with $35 million and then make $155 million over 4 days...actually, I don't even see how it can make $155 million at all in 4 days, however you look at it :-k

Sorry for being nitpicky ;)

But part of the reason for the smaller grosses for SW is that Lucas would not allow it to open in many theaters, if he bites the bullet this time and lets it go for 3700, then it does have a chance to crush Spidey's open.

I expect it to open in around 3,500 theatres. Lucas is picky and that hasn't changed over years.

I don't believe it has a chance to crush Spidey's opening because it opens on a Thursday. There is a good chance for it to set up an opening day record, but the frontloadness will be big enough to unload the interest in this movie on the first day mostly. It might need a $45+ million opening day to make $115+ million over the 3-day weekend. If it opened on a Wednesday, I'd agree with you, but it doesn't.

Besides that, I was theoretically speaking. If it makes $35 million on its opening day, there is absolutely no chance it'll make $120 million over three days. Let's say it opens to $35 million on Thursday. It'll definitely drop on Frida,y just like last time. I'll be generous and give it a 20% drop, similar to last time (even though I believe it'll be more frontloaded). That'd give it a $28 million Friday. I'll be generous again and give it a 3.3 weekend multiplier. That means a $92.4 million 3-day weekend and a 4-day gross of $127 million. That's a best case scenario for a $35 million opening day, I'd say.

Now let's say, it makes $40 million on Thursday, on-par with Spider-Man 2. With the same pattern (which is pretty generous), it'd generate a $105.6 million 3-day weekend (still almost $10 million shy off Spidey's opening) and a $145.6 million 4-day gross.

If I stick with this, as mentioned above, rather generous pattern, it'd need a $44 million opening day AT LEAST to beat Spidey's opening.

Ep 1 made $430M, and in some circles it's STILL considered a failure.

I was going to redo them today, after I gave some more thought to it now that I know it's 4 day not 5 day. I didn't want to rush and redo it right as soon as I realized the mistake.

This is the family movie of the summer, most likely - if it can avoid not totally sucking. Madagascar might do well, but this Sith is likely the main family movie. And with the weekends leading up to Sith having KOH and XXX2, it will just create more pent up demand for a real summer blockbuster.

Bottom line though is I'm not changing it much, now that I've adjusted to the different weekend size, and I'm going higher on final gross.

40/155/350

This is all for kicks anyway. Lets see what happens.

The problem is that 1) SW: ROTS is darker than all other SW movies and therefore not as much of a family flick as the other ones 2) SW: ROTS is PG-13 which is, still, not PG and therefore indicates that it is not really a family movie. I believe it's the first PG13 rated SW movie ever.

As long as it's a good movie, however, I don't care much about its gross.
