 Trump’s Trade War
Trump goes to war! He has declared a trade war against Canada and Mexico and it is time we open a thread to commemorate this declaration.
So let me open the discussion by asking my Trump voting friends…why?

Cannot explain the unexplainable. The 51st state is just crazy.

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
It seems he is purposely crashing the stock market. I'm hoping it's a short term stock manipulation play where's he just posturing with the tariffs so his insiders can buy stocks at a temporary discount before they rebound back when tariffs are lifted.
However, another part of me is fearful that he decided to go scorched earth after the assassination attempt. Where he would be purposely crashing the stock market and jumpstarting a recession/depression as revenge to hurt the pockets of the deep state that tried to off him.

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
It's because he has recruited people that cannot tell him "no". If they do, they're fired. So it means he makes all the decisions with no intel. He's a fucking moron who is just trying stuff but doesn't understand the complexities of the issues he's making decisons on.

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
Trump is going to speak with Trudeau today, my hope is that this is all a stunt for Trump to work out some “new” deal that is more or less what we already had going with Canada and Trump will spin it as a win

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
Looks like Trump's strategy was to strongarm them into making a deal and it worked.

Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border. In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million. Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together." https://x.com/JustinTrudeau/status/1886529228193022429

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
So far his threats have worked on Colombia, Mexico, and Canada. I mean, you've got to hand it to him. He gets stuff done. Judge a man on his results and all that.
But China will be a different beast. I don't think he will be able to strongarm them into doing what he wants. And even if they say they will curb fentanyl it will just be words. China hasn't ever kept to an international agreement. Any anyway, China is failing nicely by itself without intervention from Trump.

Maybe it was all a performance to set the environment for China.

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
The question now is…is Trump truly this dumb or is there something more nefarious going on?

 Re: Trump’s Trade War
This is a clear negotiating ploy gone awry. Markets do not react well to his instability AT ALL. DT does have time to course correct but it needs happen FAST as panic, entirely justified or not, seems to be on the horizon.
A few improved trade deals that allow DT claim victory and remove the tariffs + pending tax cuts + an overdue interest rate would get economy back on track quick.
The China one is obviously the big one. That needs to be handled.

Trump is no “stable genius” by any standard but his own, but his mental faults are a symptom made obvious, compared to his predecessors, because these flaws and mistakes have gotten old. It’s trade warfare; it’s not just some negotiation tactic. It’s the end of the economic warfare of the sanctions regime and its siege tactics. That hegemony failed against Russia, and now the entire economic paradigm is collapsing globally. Trump is just an opportunist trying to exploit what he can. But the simple reason it’s not stupid is that he can win the trade war. The market is down essentially as part of a correction. That Trump initiated it just means essentially that the market is pricing in fundamental miscalculations.

Yes, I’ve insulted the intelligence of capitalism; but still insult the intelligence of your politics with much worse contempt.

Europe and Canada can’t win especially since technology is the most importantly variable. Through the rest of the world there is no united front that can win the trade war. Trump unintentionally will be the person to destroy the fossil fuel economy globally. That’s how this ends; with something more devastating and transformative than the Great Depression, but less obvious because the side effects have been mitigated and marginalized.

I hope all the dummies who voted for him have fun losing their homes and postponing retirement by a decade. The next few years is going to be rough.
