Quote:
A Minecraft Movie is a 2025 American fantasy adventure comedy film based on the 2011 video game Minecraft by Mojang Studios. It was directed by Jared Hess and written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, from a story by Allison Schroeder, Bowman, and Palmer. The film stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. In the film, four misfits are pulled through a portal into a cubic world that thrives on imagination, having no choice but to master the world while embarking on a quest with an expert crafter named Steve.

Strange movie. Even as someone that doesn't really know much about Minecraft idk if there was much here. Jason Mamoa is kinda fun but everything else about this was bland.

The first half was zany and fun and set up an interesting world. The second half devolves into generic CGi action, even if it has cute moments clearly referencing the game I’ve never played. Overall I think fans of the game will like it, if you’re not a fan you might find it inoffensive but there’s not much substance to it beyond the visuals.

So this is what it must have been like to watch Super Mario Movie without understanding all the "hey its that thing from the game" references. Or perhaps that is being too generous.

So this is what it must have been like to watch Warcraft without understanding all the "hey its that thing from the game" references.

I laughed a few times, Mamoa has some good lines (Kid says "I need you to come pretend to be my uncle" and Mamoa replies "I don't do that anymore.") Or the one bully who says "My dad says math has been debunked." That's the type of random with some soft social commentary flavor comedy that I expect from this generation. But then, I dunno, even though the minecraft world visuals were kinda neat and unique, the story is just boring once they get in there. I felt like I'd seen every scene in a different movie before (just with different critters.)

Its an overall meh for me. 4.4/10. Glad I waited for HBO. Definitely not worth getting popcorn thrown on me for.
