Emilia Pérez (Latin American Spanish: [eˈmilja ˈpeɾes]) is a 2024 Spanish-language musical crime comedy film written and directed by Jacques Audiard. The French production is based on Audiard's opera libretto of the same name, which was in turn loosely adapted from Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute.[6] The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez.

The film follows a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Saldaña) to help the leader disappear by transitioning into a woman. Its original songs were written by Camille, while its original score was provided by Clément Ducol. Filming took place from May to July 2023 in Île-de-France. The choreographic sections of the film are designed by Damien Jalet.

Emilia Pérez polarized critics internationally. In Europe, it received praise for its lead performances, themes, ambition as well as Audiard's directing and Camille's score. In contrast, it was poorly received in Mexico, where the film takes place, with many criticizing the film's cultural representation, stereotypes, Spanish dialogue, and lyrics. It was also criticized by some LGBTQ advocacy groups for its portrayal of gender transition.

The film had its world premiere on 18 May 2024 at the main competition of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or, winning the Jury Prize and the Best Actress award for its female ensemble. It was theatrically released by Pathé in France on 21 August 2024. It became the second most-nominated film in Golden Globe history with ten nominations at the 82nd ceremony, winning four, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (the first time a non-English-language film won the category) and Best Foreign Language Film, while Gascón became the first trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Additionally, it was named one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the American Film Institute, and was selected as the French entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

This reminds me of Dear Evan Hansen in that it’s so absurd the premise could work as a comedy. As it’s played straight though, the film just does not work at all and comes across as inauthentic. It’s most entertaining in the first third when it’s most absurd, once Emilia is living as a woman it gets much less interesting and I was bored by the end when she got kidnapped. Didn’t care when they died as they were all bad people besides Rita.

I loved this and think it's being unfairly maligned this awards season. It's an exciting blast of a movie and all the performances are great. One of my favorites of 2024.

I put this on while trying to sleep last night and made it through about an hour. Its not good, the musical sequences are pure cringe, but ... its also strangely compelling? At least Zoey Saldana's part of the story. Like I actually do wanna know what happens to her and might try and finish it at some point.

It’s like a telenovela Spanish language soap opera that for some reason is getting awards.

Basically yeah, a soap opera with some really weird songs. Without the trans stuff it wouldn't be coming near the oscars. But ... what was the message there? Cause it seemed like the movie was OK with Emilia leaving her old life behind and facing no consequences for it. Murder and every other crime imaginable? Totally fine. Messing with your ex-wife's bank account? Dead by dawn lol.

Zoey is 100% the lead of this movie too. There's no co-lead, ensemble, etc... It's Saldana's story. She is the driver of action and the viewpoint of the audience. But again, this oscar campaign is all about appealing to the voting members that don't actually watch the movies, so why not manipulate it a bit more?

All that being said, and with my usual caveat of how extremely low expectations can make a film seem better than it is ... this wasn't terrible lol. I'm only gonna give it a 5/10 just cause the songs are that bad, but it was better than the normal netflix trash designed to be watched on a phone while you're waching something else on another phone, like Back In Action or Carry On.
