Solid. All the leads are great and the last act is pretty strong. Glen Powell is probably gonna be in so many movies for years to come

Glen proves he's a star in this.

The last act being strong is a key reason this should have good WOM. Most blockbusters these days start strong and peter out towards the end. I'm glad this didn't.

B

Pros
- Glen Powell is the next Tom Cruise. He exudes charm.
- Fantastic FX. The tornados were impressive.
- side characters were enjoyable

Cons
- the lead actress was bland. Not a good actor either.
- the movie should have had Glen out in front as the clear hero. But I get why not. For woke reasons.
- a bit of a retread of Twister with some of the same beats from the first

The storm sequences are exciting and very well done. The middle of the movie is slow and keeps it from being great. But overall a very much above average disaster film.

Shockingly strong script. Compelling character and excellent performance by DEJ with the heart and drama while Powell is amassing and fun. This is a better film than the original, albeit not quite as thrilling.

Twisters 3 will be a$125m+ opener and should bring back Helen Hunt.

Twister 96 had perhaps one of the greatest film trailers ever made. To this day it holds up. The film IMO could never quite live up to the trailer. The 2024 film had a meh trailer, but the film far surpasses it and it ends up being a great blockbuster that hits all the key notes.

And it was a nice surprise to see Maura Tierney in this.

The assault of horrible country music was nauseating, first of all. I understand it takes place in Oklahoma, but the first one wasn't drowning in endless twangy drawls and I'm not sure who decided it had to be all country, all the time. Ew. The pandering shots of American flags and the praying mother/daughter being saved were also laughable, but I know it gets masses of middle America all teary about patriotism and their imaginary friend watching out for them ;)

As for how effective it was as a disaster movie, I'd say "meh." There really wasn't much in the way of stakes at any point, as everyone who wasn't one of the two main leads amounted to zero. They were just a bunch of nobodies who added nothing. Even the leads of sad-faced magic lady and perpetually grinning hick man were rather dull, mostly because all the edges of any romance/courting have been sanded off to pretty much nothing. Having him go after her in an airport like it's a romcom, only for them to stand there and do nothing seemed kind of odd.

And the GirlBoss single-handedly saving the day at the end was also eyeroll worthy ;)

Yeah this was weird, despite being a disaster movie featuring mass death, the film seemed extremely PG and sanitized when it came to the humans. Like this is a movie where people are being brutally killed (tornado victims are usually barely recognizable as human, more like a chunk of meat after getting put inside what's basically a giant blender full of debris going at 200mph), why can't we have a kiss scene? Or God forbid a tasteful sex scene?? Like, Glen Powell worked HARD for that body. He loves showing it off. We want to see it! CGI tornadoes weren't the only visual effect available here.

This has one of the worst soundtracks for any blockbuster in recent memory. Every single montage or scene with completely unnecessary dreadful country music was excruciating, especially when taking in the first film's memorable jaunty score into effect.

Anthony Ramos in particular was also quite bad.

That being said, the disaster sequences are undeniably effective and the last act and the whole setpiece with the town etc. is awesome and worth the price of admission.

Glen is good but this is no different of a performance than the act he's perfected in other films. Set It Up remains his most charming and charismatic performance in my book.

Post Re: Twisters
I've never liked the original Twister. Only reason I saw this is a geneal interest in disaster movies. Lets see some cool destruction and who cares if the rest is lame right?

Happy to be wrong here as I really enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Pacing is so much better than in the original. The two leads are more loveable and their mission has higher stakes as they are not just studying the tornados in an effort to create more warning, but stopping the naders in their tracks before they even cause massive damage.

Is it perfect? Nah. Is it overly sentimental at times? Of course. The characters are always going into areas "trying to help" and all they're really doing is dispensing common sense that the people in these areas should already know. I usually like Anthony Ramos, but for some reason I hated the way he said "tornado." And he says it alot so thats a problem lol.

But overall, this is just a roaring great time at the cinema. Wish I had gone last week before Deadpool took up all the good screens. Might try again at a better theater sometime in August. For now, I'll give Twisters an 8.5/10.

Yes, Twisters was better than Twister. I was more entertained by it and thought it was a better film from a better director (and I love De Bont's Speed).

The original had perhaps one of the best trailers of all time (I was 17 at the time and couldn't get enough of it - taped it on VHS from an Entertainment Tonight preview) - but the film couldnt live up to it.

By contrast - Twisters trailers were meh to me - but the film delivered.

When it says “Based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin” are they talking about Dorothy? Does Dorothy count as a character?

All of the set pieces are damn good. And the CGI is pretty damn near flawless. That saying, I think prefer the original’s approach where each tornado and their destruction increases until the finale. The approach this time is more realistic and each set piece is kind of their own version of hell, but it kind of leaves them nowhere to build up to. The pool scene and the movie theater scene could flip places and (aside from character actions) not much would change. I never really realized it until now, but the tornadoes in the original kind of have their own personality. One tornado in the new movie splits into two like in the original ("TWINS") so that's something.

I think what the movie is really missing are personalities. Powell and Edgar Jones feel like Paxton and Hunt without all of their sexual chemistry (yet did anyone else feel like the trio possibly could've ended up as a thruple at the end? Ramos cheering Powell on at the end to get her in the airport was sad). And Powell’s friends all feel like Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s character from the original if you divided him up in six pieces. No one is bad, but no one is memorable.

Imagine having to deliver the line, “I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE!”. Corenswet might actually be Superman for being able to deliver that line with a straight face. Maybe a more subtle approach would’ve been to have his character wear a hat that says “Me Evil” with an arrow pointing down.

Maura Tierney’s part was clearly written for Helen Hunt. I likesme so Maura Tierney though.

How do none of the windows on the Dodge Ram's break? The strength from the wind alone would’ve shattered them let alone the drop in actual air pressure from the tornado itself when they drive straight into them multiple times? Those kind of trucks in real life have shutters over them, but I guess we couldn't include those because we wouldn't have been able to see Glen Powell's beautiful face, even though they have cameras in the truck...

Also, what do they solve at the end? The only way you can disrupt a tornado is if you drive straight into it and release that mixture. Okay, I think they just invented the most dangerous job on the planet. I feel like the only way that helps is if you can guess the exact spot a tornado will form at and that's next to impossible. Sequel?

Fun, but give me the original.

3/5

Saw this again in a theater with dolby sound and it was awesome.

Spoiler: show
But Kate should have died at the end. Hate to do it since I really liked the character, but it makes no sense otherwise since they clearly state "we cant stop a tornado this big" like 20 minutes earlier. Since that ended up not being true, a bunch of people died for nothing. :funny:

Damn this was excellent. (disbelief suspended upon entering) Agree that it’s a better movie than the ‘96 OG.

I’m a sap but some of the scenes had me crying, especially the standout moment—in the pool (with the mother repeating to her daughter the same thing Kate’s bf was saying in the opening scene… PTSD echoes and so beautifully done).

I’m straight up being overly generous with my grading this year but fuck it, because life is beautiful and I’m grateful to be rousingly entertained. A

I liked the score and the soundtrack fit perfectly, like gaddamn, the country music hate in this thread! And no I’m not from the south or rural area or a hick or conservative.

Love this, it's just a great blockbuster, it knows what it is and executes just really well, good characters, Edgar-Jones is as much of a star as Powell, excellent visuals that feel like the real deal and a good soundtrack too. It nails the length as well, perfect film for cinemas, where I was still just able to catch it a few weeks ago, had a really good time.
