 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Probably biggest surprise is no Gerwig or Robie.
No DiCaprio or Killer Moon for Adapted

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Godzilla Minus One getting a nom is pretty cool.
Past Lives getting in for Picture but only getting 2 noms is annoying.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Godzilla Minus One got the biggest applause in the room during the announcements! People really love that movie its going to do so well when it hits streaming too. It's also the first Godzilla movie ever I believe with an Oscar nomination. I think it's going to win.

Oppie with 13 noms (would be 14 if the sound category was divided)

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Did anyone else find Jack Quaid annoying when he was presenting? I'm looking forward to the 7 pm start for the Oscars. Most of the big awards will not be at nearly midnight and maybe they can finish by 10:30 pm. Unless they have an Oscars like in 2002 when it went for 4 hrs and 23 min.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Margot probably was not a lot of people's top choice for nomination. Still really silly for her to not get a nom when she's a key part to why the film is good.
I think Saltburn should've got a Cinematography nom.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Gerwig AND Robbie missing is a pretty bad look, especially since it scored 8 other nominations. The nominations show it was popular, which includes the BP and both supporting nods, so not giving at least one of the two biggest names on the film a nomination is rough and will generate a lot of bad PR given what the film is about.
Everyone who accepts any wins it picks up will likely point this out.

But then Best Picture has crap like Maestro while Godzilla can't even get a sound nomination lol. Overall solid nominations though. Both Oppenheimer and Poor Things are much better than the usual oscar fare and they dominated all the categories. Biggest snubs were for Barbie and Killers but it kinda felt like both were losing momentum. Still, missing actress and director will drop ratings by quite a bit. Kind of a big fail when this could have been the biggest oscar ceremony in many years.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Seems Barbie was losing momentum for a while. The Critic's Choice was a bit of a cringe when none of the wins Barbie had were telecast so Chelsea asked Margot and Greta to come to the stage to make a speech impromptu. I also found their speeches around Barbie didn't pack the punch that would be remembered around nomination time. It just didn't feel like Barbie had much momentum despite making $1.4B it's awards campaign seemed lacking. Meanwhile, awards campaign publicity seemed to go more to Ferrera and Gosling.
Anatomy of a Fall seems to have big dark horse potential. It probably would have been at 6 nods if France picked it as it's official film. It's also likely one of the films least watched by everyone so could pick up momentum as more people see it. The only films I could see beat Oppenheimer are Poor Things, then Anatomy of A Fall and long shot Barbie.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
My predictions on winners:
Best Picture Oppenheimer
Best Director Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer
Best Actor Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
Best Actress Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon
Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer
Best Supporting Actress Da'Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Best Original Screenplay Anatomy of a Fall
Best Adapted Screenplay Barbie
Best Animated Feature The Boy and the Heron
I feel like all this Barbie snub discussion could push it towards a Best Picture win...? Lol small chance but who knows. How epic would it be if by some chance Barbenheimer won as a tie lolol

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Supporting actor and actress looked locked at this point. RDJ seems like the sure thing.
Still feel there's some suspense in actor/actress though.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
It should be the other way around with Murphy and Stone being the near locks and supporting categories being up in the air. Suppt Actor especially has four terrific performances in it.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
I haven't seen all of the best actress performances but just watched Anatomy of a Fall and Sandra Hüller is exceptional in it. I still like Past Lives' Greta Lee the most for performances last year but Sandra beats Emma Stone and Lily for me though getting the nod will likely be her prize.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
I think American Fiction is now the #1 spoiler to Oppenheimer. But probably not going to happen.

Everyone who accepts any wins it picks up will likely point this out. Well they didn't deserve it at all. It was a cute but hokey fantasy comedy, something like a slightly more sophisticated Bruce Almighty. The direction was competent for what it was, but there was hardly anything extraordinary about it IMO. And Margot also was competent but it was hardly an acting tour de force. She didn't really have any scenes where she had to really act her face off. She mostly looked pretty, gave exaggerated emotions (which I get because she's supposed to be a doll), it just wasn't the kind of role that allowed her to really act, nothing like I Tonya.

 Re: 2024 Oscar nominations
Take it with a grain of salt but I read one article on Variety I believe that support for Sandra Hüller for Best Actress is surging. Maybe she has a dark horse chance if Emma / Lily are cutting too much into each other's votes.
Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis stopped Cate Blanchett and Angela Bassett last year so maybe some surprises come up in Best Actress.
RDJ and Da'Vine seem like locks so maybe actress comes up with a surprise.
