Could be a lot worse for Aquaman.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
Annual box office up to Friday is $8,544,699,623. From DHD estimates + holdovers + Color Purple, maybe $8.668B by Monday leaving $332.25B to go for $9B. $55.4M avg/day for 6 days. Aquaman looks much better thanks to Marvels. Will make 50% more and is $65M cheaper.
Charlie Sat early #'s: Aquaman $8.75M (likely will miss $30M 3day if true) Wonka $7.25M+ Migration $4M+ Anyone But You $2M

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
Aquaman 2’s opening day is still quite a bit below the Marvels and the Flash. So even though it has the holiday to its advantage, it’s not out of the woods yet in terms of for sure passing 100 mil.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
The Marvels only made 11 million total in China so Aquaman having already 30 million there is a positive for it at least.

I think Aquaman’s director is Chinese I heard the original Aquaman was like the perfect American movie for Chinese audiences tastes, style of humor, etc., almost like they made it with that in mind. Probably no coincidence they hired an asian director who made Furious 7.

Everyone knew Sunday would see big drops, but why was everything so soft on Saturday too? Not that it really matters since these movies will make the majority of their money over the next week.

Pretty bad for Aquaman. Despite all the DC mess, it’s still the sequel to a well-received blockbuster.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
One should not be selective to then form an opinion. The complete bottoming out of the superhero genre since Aquaman is important, and this sequel's performance in relation to that isn't bad, and it has some lucrative days ahead, too. When all is said and done this will be regarded as more successful than Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and The Marvels, and so long as it's not in the bottom few it will not draw much negative attention.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
Superhero movies have had disaster legs all year presumably cause all the remaining comic book loyalists see it opening weekend, and for some of the people going it's the one where they realize they don't like them anymore. So while Aquaman coming out in holiday guarantees it won't have a <2 type multipler like the Flash and The Marvels, what's the crappiest version of holiday legs? Rise of Skywalker did 2.9x on a Dec 20 release date for example, which is a little better than Dec 22 by avoiding Christmas Eve. If Aquaman 2 did a 3 multiplier, it would only scrape by 80 million like the Marvels, and a 3.5 would be just under 100.

Good point. Legs is a discussion for later, we'll see how well it truly did later

Preview #'s from DHD:
The Boys in the Boat $1.74M (includes early access screenings) Ferrari $656K ($431K yesterday, $225K in early access screenings)
Color Purple - TBD
Ferrari looks like the big flop of the season. That's got a $96M budget!

Would be fine for Boys in the Boat if the budget was reasonable. Clooney mediocre directing career lives another day.

The Boys in the Boat is doing fantastic everywhere I look today. Since it will be a crowd-pleaser it looks like it will turn into a sleeper hit.

We went to the same university over the same period - in hindsight i recalled i met him but would never have imagined he’d go on to be so successful.

Ferrari looks like the big flop of the season. That's got a $96M budget! What a shame that Ferrari tanked. Perhaps no surprise in the US but that’s still very bad considering how iconic the name is. It will fair better overseas but with that budget - its going to be tough.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
Before it opened I was feeling a sub $50mil for Aquaman. But now it has a chance to hit $100mil.
The fact DCU cant even habe the biggest bomb of the year is lulz. The never get to be the best at anything. Not even bombing.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
Color Purple is another random breakout to add to a year full of them. WB somehow running the season while Zaslav continues to swing his axe in all directions.
Christmas Day and Disney has one film in the top 10 - Poor Things. I think that sums up their year pretty well.
Decent for Iron Claw. Going wide was the right move but I don't think they ever had a chance to expand the audience beyond older wrestling fans.

Color Purple and Wonka are latest examples of audiences looking for unique takes on known properties.
If Joker 2 is any good, it’s going explode like a volcano.

Re: Christmas 2023 weekend thread
Joker 2 is going to have a massive OW out of the gate.
Top Rated R movies of all time:
1 Joker — $1.074 Billion. Joker. 2 Oppenheimer — $954.3 Million. 3 Deadpool 2 — $785.8 Million
Pre Oppenheimer, Joker didn't just beat Deadpool for top rated R movie of all time, it beat it by 36.7%! Going to be big!
