w00t! It's on my top 100. Amazing film.

I'm watching this tonight. I really liked Being John Malkovich, which I was worried that I wouldn't, and I was a bit underwhelmed by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I thought I would really like. I think I'll really like this, so I'm hoping it doesn't underwhelm. Here is my current scorecard. This will be my 24th recommendation since March 24th.

I really hope you like it, because American Beauty is easily in my top *10* of all time.

I liked Big Fish but I didn't love it.

It's a nice movie to see sometime if you don't really have anything else to do.

I've heard mixed reviews on Big Fish. I might be slipping out tonight to rent 3 more movies, so I'll post them in the rented DVDs thread if I do.

This is also one of my favorite movies of all time. Just brilliant. The script is smart, it's dark, humerous, and beautifully executed. And what more I could say about the performances? And the movie hasn't aged since the first time I watched it.

Its ok. I liked alot of the characters and dialogue, and I didn't mind its ability to try exploring some personal situations that were uncomfortable. It dove right into marrital woes, boredom, depression, alientation, and everything that goes with it with enthusiasm. It had a good result too. It also had some exceptionally weak moments of coincidence that ruined the entire movie. I love Cooper, but his character killed it. Literally and figuratively. Too much, and completely out of place with the rest of the themes. That he ultimately dictated the outcome added insult to injury. Still, I can appreciate 80% of Beauty's exploration.

Still wonder why they just didn't get a divorce.

Well, American Beauty certainly does live up to it's billing, at least for me it did. It's one of those films that really leaves an impact, and most of you probably know that I really like those types of movies a great deal. Kevin Spacey was great as the perverted Lester, who's going through a mid life crisis, a loveless marriage, and an infatuation with his daughter's underage female friend. The scene at the fast food drive thru window was just classic! I'm not even sure that the movie was supposed to be funny, but I found a lot of humor in it. That perceived blow job , for instance. How ironic, that such a humorous moment ended up having such tragic results.

Annette Benning was at her best here, as the very uptight and bitchy Carolyn , but when she lets loose in the bedroom, it was hysterical. The whole cast does a great job. Very interesting characters on all fronts, from Jane's voyeur like boyfriend, to his militaristic father, to Jane's cheerleader friend. This was Spacey's movie, most of all, and it's easy to see why he won the Oscar, and why the film itself won the top prize. This is a very good film!

American Beauty

I don't understand what the fuss over it was. I found it overly pretentious. I also did not understand the reviews and people's comments on how it mimics reality and people's real feelings. While a good movie, it was hyped up to be more than what it really was. The acting was fine, not great.

I think AMERICAN BEAUTY is an absolutely amazing film. The acting is amazing, the story is amazing and you can really relate to the story. Sure, a lot of the film is "messed up" but somehow you'll be able to relate to it. You might have a slutty friend, you might be an outsider, your dad might have a crush on your best friend :wink: AMERICAN BEAUTY is easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

True, even though it deserves it. As a matter of fact, I consider it a masterpiece, it just doesn't completely click with me.

I was judging by your point of view and your taste. I thought you'd really really love it.

An A doesn't constitute really really loving something? I did really really love it, just not as much as the movies I would grade an A+.

Decent movie.

It still boggles my mind this movie won Best Picture over three vastly superior movies, The Green Mile, The Sixth Sense and the one that was not even nominated for Best Picture, The Matrix.

We must have very similar movie taste. I loved American Beauty and as a piece of art, I actually consider it superior to the first two you have mentioned. However, even though I really loved American Beauty, there were a couple of movies that year that I liked more than it and the three you mentioned all belong to them

I hated this movie. And that scene with the bad was pure stupid. I would give it a C-

Like Lester says at the end of the movie, "You probably have no idea what I'm talking about right now, but you will someday." You need to watch it again when you geta bit oder. It'll all make sense then. :wink:

I don't think the age matters that much. I saw the movie when I was 14 and I liked it a lot. With 17, I fully came to appreciate it (as you can see by the second quote in my sig)
