I totally agree. I think this Obon could be historic with all the interesting movies to choose from.

Hmm I noticed with The Little Mermaid remake the subtitled shows were popular.

Seems to be happening with Elemental? I see the listings in Toho Shinjuku is half sub half dub. Shibuya is all sub. Nihonbashi is mostly sub. Roppongi Hills is also mostly sub. Is this just for the cinemas in Tokyo, though? I wonder. Kind of weird for all the emphasis the marketing played with the dub voice actors.

Woo the third ¥15 billion+ movie of the decade  About even with the 2000s and already more than the entirety of the 2010s with 6 more years to go.

Looks like I might have been wrong about how many seats Transformers would get. I thought Elemental and Crayon Shin-chan would have more seats, but this might not be the case.

Friday seating will differ some from Sat and Sun. More older skewing films typically receive more seats on Friday wjile younger skewing films receive more on Sat and Sun. Transformers may not be older skewing exactly, but of the three films in question, it skews the oldest.

Yeah, makes sense for subs to be more prominent in/around Tokyo.

Day 241! Slowest ever to reach the milestone, but getting there is the big thing, not how fast. 14th film in history to reach the milestone. And three of those in just the last 3 years (all 3 WSJ properties). Agafin has some stats above for it too.

31 days to to before its end date. That's all summer vacation and a week and a half of Obon Festival in the middle. If Toei does something special for it to send it off, there's a possibility it aims to overtake Ponyo or maybe Avatar too.

That's insane... I would have guessed maybe Star Wars did it. I guess Japan really is the #1 place in the world for animated movies at the cinema.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (07/21-23)
There have been a lot of close, recent cases of films finishing near ¥15 billion too. But alas, it still remains that "ultimate" goal that is as hard as ever to really hit even after 26 years of the first film doing it.

Just in the last two years (or barely over 1.5 years): Suzume finished with ¥14.86b. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 did ¥13.8b. Top Gun 2 did ¥13.72b. And still playing, Detective Conan 26 and Super Mario Bros. are both on track to finish between ¥13.5-14.0b.

Animation has always been strong in Japan of course, but it's really become the dominate genre in recent/modern box office years:

Of the top 10 grossing films of the last ~five years (2018-2023), 9/10 have been animated. In order of gross: Demon Slayer, One Piece Red, Slam Dunk (still playing), Suzume, Weathering With You, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Top Gun 2, Detective Conan 26 (still playing), Super Mario Bros. (still playing), and Frozen II.

And of the top 15 grossing films of the last ~TEN years (2013-2023), 12/15 have been animated. In order of gross: Demon Slayer, Frozen, Your Name, One Piece Red, Slam Dunk (still playing), Suzume, Weathering With You, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Top Gun 2, Detective Conan 26 (still playing), Super Mario Bros. (still playing), Frozen II, Bohemian Rhapsody, Beauty and the Beast, and The Wind Rises.

Note: Still playing = grosses still being reported. I know TGM is technically still playing, but it appears to be maybe one or two locations and hasn't been updated in a couple months now.

AEON Cinemas
180,840/93 TC | Kingdom III (587 shows)
134,163/93 TC | Shin Chan 3D (627 shows)
98,656/94 TC | Elemental (598 shows)
87,055/86 TC | Transformer (503 shows)
71,055/94 TC | MI7 (481 shows)
~ Seating Capacity

____________________

Elemental has more seats than Transformers, like I originally thought. Crayon Shin-Chan is apparently a cartoon that appeals to more rural audiences. And AEON is less of a city-center cinema chain.

Overall this signals to me that Elemental will have around 400,000 seats available per day across all cinemas in Japan. Which is really good!

I'd go with more like 275/300k? Aeon has the most seats of any chain (~1/3 nationwide) is typically more friendly (in terms of seating) for Disney (or just imported) releases, especially if they're family films. Nearly all their theaters are located in malls or shopping centers, so they tend to attract younger audiences.

Toho Cinemas has the second most seats (~1/4 nationwide), but are the busiest chain, and they will definitely favor their own films (Kingdom III, Crayon Shin-chan, How Do You Live?, and via Towa Pictures, which they own, also Transformers and MI7) more over the upcoming holiday period.

We'll see, but 275/300k or so is plenty for Elemental. It's not going to be so much about how it opens, but rather what it does over Obon Festival and just August in general. August is one of the strongest months of the year (if you do the math, it might even be #1), but it doesn't actually have many big openings (only One Piece Film Red has opened over ¥1 billion in the month) because business is *really* spread out over the full month more so than any other months thanks to the summer vacation dailies and the Obon Festival period.

EDIT! You mean ~400k nationwide, not from tracked cinemas (~75% nationwide). Yeah, that is probably about right I'd say.

So, I had this chart (and other "later" weekend charts) with a cutoff at ¥100m (or ¥50m for very much later weekends). But with runs trending longer in recent years, I'm going to be adding films that earn below the original cutoff starting with Weekend 14 and go back and add films to them over time with updates (like Jujustu Kaisen 0 here).

So, anything above the cutoff is 100% accurate, where as anything below will be a work-in-progress for a while as I go back and find films to add. For this chart and many after it, that'll probably be anything over ¥50 million. I'm not going add everything that has a 14th or later weekend on record, of course... not that crazy.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (07/28-30); Charts Updati
Do we think Oppenheimer gets released here after all the drama? Having just seen the film would be interesting to me if it doesn't given the framing and tone of the film.
