Unreal achievement and still remember the day.
Do wish though Xmen (2000) got more appreciation too. It had a pretty massive opening and feel helped re-open the door for Spidy to do as well as it did!

Such an epic, deserving film. What a box office beast it was.

A game changer. Kinda bizarre to think how far superhero films have gone.

A true classic of the superhero genre. This was THE movie to watch as a kid. Spider-Man was everything.

Re: HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPIDER-MAN :D $114m OW
I still remember visiting Box Office Mojo Saturday afternoon to see if they had any news about the Friday numbers and completely losing my mind when I saw it had crushed Harry Potter's first day, and thinking it could it open to over $100 million????" Then the next day my dad tuned in to news radio station after church and their TOP story was Spider-Man having a $110M+ opening weekend. One of those moments that hooked me on box office tracking for life.

Re: HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPIDER-MAN :D $114m OW
I recall going opening weekend and being surprised to see one of my teachers in front of me in line. He noticed me a few moments later and we had a brief talk about liking Spider-Man. I shouldn't have been surprised an "old guy" (50s, I think) was a Spider-Man fan, really, but it was sort of a "WTF?! Mr. Mertz likes Spider-Man, too?!" moment.
The theater was absolutely packed. And I recall the movie was everywhere with its marketing. I was a bit Spider-Man obsessed that summer (got the game, clothes, soundtrack, etc.). Marketing team understood their assignment.

Remember how shocked we were that films were making 68 to 73 million just a few months earlier. Those were the days !

Re: HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPIDER-MAN :D $114m OW
The Feb 2001 to Dec 2002 period was epic from OW end. Hannibal started the year 2001 to open at #3 of all time behind only SW Ep. 1 and JP2. By the end of 2002 just 23 months later it was #15!
Today that would be the equivalent of a movie opening to $258M+ (to get to #3) and see another 12 movies do that by Dec. 2023.

Re: HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPIDER-MAN :D $114m OW
To me that's still the greatest OW to follow ever. Just an amazing weekend. The fact that the first day was about as big as full weekend openings of films like Twister, Deep Impact and The Mummy was just incredible.
Only the current top 3 OW's are in the same league.
It also had an epic feel-good quality perhaps a result of opening post 911. It's 2nd and 3rd weekend holds were also great (dethroning the untouchable Star Wars in the process)

We were lucky to have witnessed it in our prime. The 2001-2002 OW smash-a-thon in particular was epic (reminiscent of 1989).

Re: HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPIDER-MAN :D $114m OW
It was like a paradigm shift. Wait, what? 9 digit opening weekend?? I was shocked. It was like that Lost World opening weekend where we were all gob smacked that something could gross that much. Years later, Spiderman elicited the same reaction. The movie was a 4-quadrant mega success.

Re: HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPIDER-MAN :D $114m OW
So to celebrate Sony's 100 year anniversary it's re-releasing 8 Spider-man films?
We're getting Shrek 2 and Spider-man 2 this April on their 20th anniversaries.
Spider-Man (2002) – Monday, April 15 Spider-Man 2 (2004) – Monday, April 22 Spider-Man 3 (2007) – Monday, April 29 The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) – Monday, May 6 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) – Monday, May 13 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) – Monday, May 20 Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) – Monday, May 27 Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) – Monday, June 3
Probably won't make that much but surprised they don't re-release Spider-verse 1 and 2 as well. Studios without product due to the strike being creative.
