By the way, I'm acting like I know how this presales thingy works but I actually dunno lol
So, the bigger the presales, the bigger the grossing, is that right?

I'm a newbie so please be gentle when explaining xD

Pre-sales means the tickets that have been sold for that day in advance through online or BO. It gives us an idea of what the day will look like. These numbers also give us an idea about the demand that movie has in the market. Other than pre-sales are walk-ins meaning the general people who decide to buy a ticket at BO before the movie/show starts, these are generally higher than pre-sales specially for non-fanbase driven movies or once a movie is late in its run (like DS for example)

You are right in assuming higher pre-sales means bigger gross and that's true for 99% of the movies but there are some odd ball movies that do insanely well with walk-in business as well (mostly movies that are original or come from an unknown source material and generate enough buzz).

With the current restrictions theaters are not allowing pre-sales before the start of the day in advance meaning if you plan to watch a DS show at 7pm tomorrow the earliest you can book is once the the theaters opens its online portal in the morning (could be between 12am to 10am depending on the theater chain) which is why the pre-sale numbers will go down and it will be even more difficult to gauge a movie's BO potential days ahead like we were getting in the month of December.

I saw on twitter (these are not official sources) that some distributors had decided to postpone the release of their film due to the state of health emergency in Japan. In addition to the end of pre-sales, some theaters will also stop showing Demon Slayer at 5:50 p.m. Sanitary measures will last until early February. The people on twitter that I have seen have a really bad feeling about the future (almost 8000 cases still yesterday).

Today, 24k admissions at the usual locations (35k admissions overall) / ¥55mn ($0.5M). It's almost 90% drop today, let's face it, COVID-19 is starting to impact Demon Slayer's run and will continue to negatively impact Demon Slayer a few weeks.

But the important thing here is that "COVID-19 is starting to impact Demon Slayer's run" rather than demand of people for the movie has been dropping, right? And if this is the case, can we expect a more leggy late run for a movie? (People who don't go to cinema this week to avoid the crowds, will go to cinema in next week for example).

When the movie drops because there is no demand left, then that case will be dangerous.

Can't wait to see the opening weekend of Gintama
The reviews that I've read from people that watched the film was mostly positive
I really need to find the deepest of the deep web in order to find a few negative reviews lmao

The illustration of Gorilla mangaka to KnY is really real lmao, I thought it was a troll.
The artwork was said to be great, so I excited to see what it looked like.

Gintama's opening day is only slightly lower compared to the LA's, which if I remember correctly performed way better than the previous anime movies for the series.

The numbers are going to be deflated for a month or so.

I mentioned at the start of the week that restrictions would possibly be coming, but I'll prepare a post of what those are again here in a minute to re-remind everyone to avoid rumors and hearsay from being posted.

Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba were put under a state of emergency that went into effect today (Saturday for theaters) and will last until February 7th. These four prefectures account for the vast majority of the box office, somewhere in the 75/80% territory of business. What does this mean for theaters in these prefectures? Beginning on Saturday:

-Theaters have been requested to close by 8PM. So depending on the runtime of a film, the last showings will begin so they don't run past this deadline. Therefore the last showings will begin at/or before 6PM or earlier in most cases.

-Theaters are no longer allowing reserved ticket sales until 8-hours in advance. So advance ticket sales are going to be much, much lower than normal.

-Theaters have been requested to resume 50% capacity, which they had been operating on before this past September/October. This isn't a particularly challenging restriction for a film's performance, but opening weekends will be more limited in what they can do especially now with the shortened business hours.

And remember, this is currently just for the four prefectures listed above. Theaters in all remaining prefectures, unless chains decide to also implement the changes there as well, are still operating under full capacity and normal business hours. However, the four affected prefecture account for 75/80% of all business nationwide, so there will be a noticeable impact on the box office over the next four weeks.

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the actual total.

The drop today isn't so surprising. Last Friday was New Year's Day and a Discount Day. A 70-80% drop at least was to be expected.

Go back to November 10th and you'll see that it dropped 83% from the prior Tuesday, November 3rd, due to it being a holiday for example. That's about the same as the drop today versus last week. And November 30th was also down over 70% since it came off a prior holiday the week before.

Well, it was expected to happen, as the rise in Covid cases has been a concern since december.
The japanese government did what I consider the logical thing, waiting after the holidays were over, and then establishing the new restrictions.

Let's just hope that, like last year, Japan's measures against the virus are successful and they kepp it under control.

Here is the updated list of records for the manga, with the numbers from week #06 of 2021 (from December 28th,2020 to January 03rd, 2021).

Three of its volumes broke 5 million over the week, too. So first series to not just one volume exceed 5 million copies, but three. And the remaining 20 will break 5 million in a couple weeks (some maybe next week), too, as they're all at 4.7-4.9 million right now.

I also wonder if Demon Slayer still having all of its volumes sell over 100,000 copies each week (when there's enough stock), and having to continue to issue reprints so often, is why Shueisha can't seem to get a decent stock going for Jujutsu Kaisen. The series is doing incredibly well, and its volumes are now exceeding 1 million copies, but it could be doing even better as I'm seeing stock issues occurring from 2 or 3 weeks out of each month since the anime debuted back in the fall.

Not calling Jujutsu Kaisen the Demon Slayer "successor", but I believe this is the second biggest sales increase a series has ever had behind only Demon Slayer. Nothing is going to replicate what Demon Slayer did, and continues to do still, but Jujutsu Kaisen is one to watch as this boost is, as I said, is greater than anything else prior to Demon Slayer (or maybe Attack on Titan) in Oricon's history.

These two series' continue to monopolize the Top 50, too, with 38 books among them in the Top 50.

And I still can't get Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 5 for myself. I live in America, but it's become very popular here as well, as most/all of its volumes have been out of stock for more than a month now all over the internet (Amazon, BAM!, B&N, RightStuf, etc.). Thankfully I bought all that have been released the last week before they all started to go out of stock (around the end of November), but couldn't get Vol. 5.

I doubt Jujutsu Kaisen would be able to replicate half of what KnY did, but I'm happy for it's success nonetheless. Will probably surpass BnHA for long consecutive years if I'm being completely honest.

I sideline the manga in chapter 80 or so since I wasn't that really hook at the current arc at the time. Will probably binge it once it reach like chapter 130 or so.

Hi,

I'm not really a new member cuz' I quietly followed the Japan Box-Office since page 555... Yeah I came here with KnY's impressive records ! My english's not soooo good so I won't say to many things about the movie, and actually there is not really more things to tell. The movie already did great in terms of box-office so I don't care if it'll go to 38, 40 or 45B in Japan. ^^ Still curious to see how it'll start in the U.S. or France maybe since I'm french.

To continue with what Corpse said about manga charts, Jujutsu Kaisen's not the most potential manga seller. Actually Kaiju No. 8 is breaking Jump+ records that SpyxFamily made and SxF is really impressive to sell more than a million of copies per volume with only 6 volumes off right now (december 28th). Well, 5th maybe already passed the million this week and the 6th will do for sure later... without any anime !
So Kaiju is just at his beginning but if things still go well for the next two years it'll surely be a good client to be a worldwide famous manga !
This year will be really interesting for the manga world with the end of Shingeki no Kyojin and ChainsawMan who both have an anime announcement... Chainsaw has "only" 11 volumes in total but sold better than Jujutsu Kaisen at the same state ! So it can do really great too ! Especially that it's easier to buy 11 volumes. :) Well, it's only the first part of the manga and Jump magasine just told that it'll be back later in Jump+ app.

So, I don't thing one of these manga will surpass KnY but the manga industry's doing really well and it'll continue for a while ! And it would be some good box-office scores in few years with the great best-sellers actually running. The next decent can be Slam Dunk movie.
