 Kung Fu Hustle
Kung Fu Hustle Quote: Kung Fu Hustle is a 2004 action comedy film directed and produced by, and starring Stephen Chow. The other film producers were Chui Po-chu and Jeffrey Lau, while the screenplay was written by Huo Xin, Chan Man-keung, and Tsang Kan-cheung. Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu, Danny Chan, and Bruce Leung co-starred in prominent roles.
After achieving commercial success with Shaolin Soccer, Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia began to develop Kung Fu Hustle in 2002. Although the film features the return of a number of retired actors famous for 1970s Hong Kong action cinema, it contrasts with other martial arts films released at around the same time that have made the biggest impact in the West, such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.
The cartoon style of the film, accompanied by traditional Chinese music, is often cited as its most striking feature.
The film was released on December 23, 2004 in China and on January 25, 2005 in the United States. It received extremely positive reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 90% fresh rating and Metacritic 78 out of 100. The film was also a commercial success, grossing US$17 million in North America and US$84 million in other countries. Kung Fu Hustle was the highest-grossing film in the history of Hong Kong and the tenth highest-grossing foreign language film. It was also the highest-grossing foreign language film in the United States in 2005. Kung Fu Hustle won numerous awards, including Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Awards.

I thought it was a really fun flick. One of the funniest movies of 2005 so far!

Little too quirky for me and the choreography is no where as good as Crouching Tiger, Hero or for that matter any Jackie Chan Hong Kong flicks. I wish they would rely little less on CGI when they choreographed the fights, I could not even tell it was by the same guy who did the fight scenes for Crouching Tiger and the Matrix. A little dissappointing but I guess it was an ok flick since it did keep its humor level up

One of the most entertaining movies in a while. Nothing in this movie was to be taken serious, it was just to be taken as light hearted and fun. The fight scenes are very innovative and original, and the story as a whole is one of a kind. The comedy keeps up, and the characters are great!
My favorite part of the movie is all the "specialties" the different characters possess. I especially loved Lions Roar!!!
Overall, a very entertaining, light hearted, and just FUN movie!

This is a great great movie by Chow which is liked/loved by the majority of audience around the world who have seen it. Seeing the movie, it is obvious that Chow really puts a lot of heart and thoughts into making the movie taking the whole world as his possible audience.
I give A+ (an additional + for Chow's gut to make against any possible criticism from those who are not open-minded Martial Arts/fantasy/action comedy the way that no one dares to make or no one has ever thought of making the movie this way) even though Chow has already had a lot of excellent movies by him since 1989.
Actually whenever foreigners see his movies they will only get (10%-25% at most) of the fun of his movies because non-Cantonese audience will not be able to understand his most powerful comedian quality such as his perfect blend of crazily funny verbal gags through dialogues (no comedians can do the way he does with playing with dialogues and languages), serious acting, timing, the setting of the scene and his all-around unique comedian skill and superb drama acting skill. These qualities are almost all lost during the translation to other languages and are tremedously suppressed for the two most recent films of him: Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle.
In the two most recent movies Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, he tuned himself down by a lot a lot so that most audience in the world can understand him. These movies only show less than 10% of his genious qualities. But still the movie is already well-accepted by more and more people around the world which is something encouraging.
But sadly the box office of Kung Fu Hustle in the US is not that impressive given that it has broken a lot of the box office records in Asia. I really hope people can spread the word of month to let people know the movie is worth seeing. Let Hollywood know they cannot just keep making a lot of craps and remakes (sadly in fact, a lot of people still pay money to watch these craps) while there are many other moviemakers such as Stephen Chow in the other parts of the world who are working hard all the time to make something refreshing or creative.

Get off your high horse. Do you know why most moviegoers in the US don't watch Hong Kong movies? They are all about kung-fu in one form or another. That is so inventive/creative. Sure hollywood makes a lot of crap. But show me one movie made by Hong Kong that was in the quality of Million Dollar Baby, Shrek2, The Terminal etc.
Hong Kong movies are one dimensional, crappy and pathetic. That is the reason Jackie Chan's HK movies never did well here, though a lot of people loved him here. If you want to watch those HK movies, good for you.

You generalize and I hope you know it.
Watch Infernal Affairs and repeat what you have said here again.

I have seen it and it is better than most HK movies I have seen. That movie would not rank in the top 1000 movies (though I would take Chan's Project A over that) I have seen. You are making my point. You are throwing out one HK movie. I can show at least 50 hollywood movies that were better than Infernal Affairs made during the same period. The comments by mathcal sound like somebody being mad for the failure of Team America.
Making a stupid movie like TA, though deemed funny by some, does not make it a classic.

Wow, I can't believe someone actually said that Hong Kong only makes Kung-Fu/martial art movies. Besides Infernal Affairs, a movie which is so original that it prompts Marty to try to remake it, how about In the Mood for Love, 2046, The Killer, Chungking Express, Tie mi mi (Comrades: Almost a Love Story), Xin buliao qing (Endless Love), and many others?

Hmm, that's kind of unfair, isn't it, considering Hong Kong is a tiny place with a population far fewer than U.S. Given the same token, Hollywood also produces more craps than any other country in the world. I agree Hong Kong cinema hasn't been very steller the last decade, and I'm preferring the productions from mainland China and Taiwan more and more, but the best of Hong Kong still stands on par with the best of the world. Hong Kong is only like New York City, so let's see how many films Hollywood can produce before running out of ideas if they are restricted to shoot most of their films in NYC.

I know 75% of the movies made by hollywood are crap (Amityville, Ring 2, Cursed etc just this year). At the same token, I watched a lot of Jackie Chan movies in the 80's that were fun, inventive but still one dimensional. I have the same problem with bollywood movies. They may have different stories/themes, but the underlying presentation is the same. There are a lot of non bollywood Indian movies that are really good, but are not released here.
All the HK wide releases like Hero, HOFD and KFH have one thing in common, an underlying presence of Kung Fu in all three.

I highly highly HIGHLY doubt that you can name 50 movies better than Infernal Affairs that were made in the same period

You are right. It is more like 100.
Anyway, KFH and any other HK movie based on Kungfu/Karate will not do very well with a majority of the US audiences. My wife is a good example. She loves Jackie Chan's movies (mostly Rush Hour 1 & 2, Shanghai Noon & Shanghai Knights). She just flat out refuses to see movies like Hero, HOFD and KFH. As far as she is concerned they are all similar and do not have anything she would care to see about.
Other than some hardcore fans here in the US, very few people watch movies about other cultures, made by others and are subtiltled/dubbed.

But Hero made $50+ million in the States. That is more than respectable for a foreign movie.

Yes it is quite good, even with QT name attachment. Now excluding CTHD this is pretty much the upper limit. Mostly it will be 25 mil. or less. The target audience are oriental asians and hard core asian movie buffs like you and moviedude. The only oriental movies I liked are from the 80's and had Jackie Chan. I have no interest in watching the newer oriental movies and I for one watch about 80+ movies in the theaters every year.

Do you like very controversial movies? If so, then take my advice, please and try Oldboy. It is something different from all the rest, I promise.
Also, what about Asian horror?

Hmm, it's about a guy who is being kept imprisoned in an apartment for 15 years for no apparent reason. He has no idea why that happens to him and who does that to him. On TV he learns that his wife was kiled in the meantimeand that he is the main suspect. After 15 years he is released, just as suddenly as he was imprisoned and has 5 days to find out who did that to him, otherwise he'll never get to know it. He starts seeking vengeance on everyone involved in his imprisonment...

I don't see why people should be closed-minded and simply dismiss a film like Kung Fu Hustle as "another martial art movie", "a movie I have no interest seeing no matter how good people are saying it is," when in fact it is one of the most original movies from any countries in some time. This kind of bias really bothers me. For me, I like to check out all the movies if they got good reviews or enough friends recommend them to me, no matter what genre or language they are in.
If you check out the reviews for Kung Fu Hustle, most people said that they didn't know what to expect, or they were afraid it's another Kung Pow, or they were afraid it's like Hero or CTHD because they don't like those either, and all of them ended up impressed with the movie.

Since most people have said this movie is unique, I think I will give it a shot during this week.
