Taipei

Friday: NT$7.9mn
Saturday: NT$10.85mn (Biggest single day since reopening)

Total: NT$18.75mn

Weekend shall be NT$28.5-29mn. The overall Taiwan perhaps NT$80-90mn conservatively. i.e. $2.8-3.15mn.

Early Monday sales are crazy, and suggest its Monday (third one now!) is going to either rival or beat its first Monday. Yet another 500,000+ admissions day and maybe ¥650-700 million ($6/7 million) day, its 18th day in release, is very likely. And it'll come in much higher tomorrow, possibly twice as high given it's a holiday.

And this is just a regular weekday. Yes, it's the day before a holiday (Tuesday) and regular days can benefit from this as evening/night showings are a lot stronger from people not having to go to work or school, but still.

Maybe there's an error, where it's calculating marked out seats as sold at locations that revert back to 50% capacity on the weekdays, but the numbers are so high that even if it experiences a correction later today, it's not going to significantly impact the day..

So 16B today and 17B tomorrow are locked up then as per your initial projection. I believe you projected touching 17B but it looks like it will do well above that mark. 20B by end of next weekend is locked up, might be very close 21.5B which will easily make it #5 in all time list in just 4 WEEKS :hahaha:

Thank you, guys. And welcome to the forum, pavittt!

So with around a $3 million opening in Taiwan, reaching $9/10 million is doable?

And I thought this may have a bigger drop on Monday due to discount Sunday but didn't consider day before holiday factor. Pretty confident of ¥35Bn now.

May be $10-12mn. TENET and Peninsula did that with a bit lower opening & in case of Peninsula the WoM was bad as well. I am.not sure if animes are frontloaded in Taiwan.

Your Name I recall grossed NT$243mn in full run there. This should easily clear NT$300mn and may be NT$350mn.

The episodes after 19 have been my favorite so far. The Hashira are alot of fun and round out the cast really well and flamboyantly. Shinobu is my favorite.

When do you think Mugen Train will be released in the states? Took like a year for Weathering With You and that was pretty huge too... But then again it went to theaters while Demon Slayer will be better off signing an exclusive deal with Amazon or something.

Well, you weren't wrong in presuming that. It *should* be dropping more today because of it coming off a discounted Sunday. Even being a day before a holiday doesn't typically negate this from happening. But here we are.

I am not sure if that will be right comparison. The Dragon Ball Z film in 2019 exploded in Latin America but Your Name was just okay there. Wonder if DS can do that. Though LA is under Pandemic hit still.

If Latin America & China go big, it shall beat Your Name to become second biggest Japanese film. May be even Spirited Away which is around ¥47Bn last time I compiled.

Funimation has the distribution rights, and they have "plans" to release it in "early" 2021 in the States. But it just doesn't seem likely that they'll be able to roll it out flamboyantly anytime in the first quarter of 2021 here, or probably not even the first half of the year. And since anime remains niche in the U.S. for the most part, although its audience has grown a lot in recent years, I'd imagine they would certainly need L.A and New York to be open to find notable success.

So... maybe they'll go the VOD route or something because there's certainly some money to be made here. Funimation has its own streaming service, so maybe they'll tie its release on there with a premium price tag or something. Funimation and Crunchyroll also work together, so they could possibly have a simultaneous release with them too.

If Monday has a good chance at 500k+ admits and Tuesday could near twice as big, very good chance to beat the 800k needed for an 8th highest single day. I think we will get to 10.

Maybe 11+ in the end, I mean who the fuck knows at this rate :funny:

Well, I (we) underestimated it once again:

Official 17-day total: ¥15,799,365,450 ($150.4 million) / 11,891,254 admissions.

And just like that, after three weeks, it has entered the All-Time Top 10, knocking Avatar out. Third weekend figure and daily breakdown (if released again) haven't been released yet.

Saturday a bit higher in admissions, but noticeably higher in gross (avg. ticket price actually went up versus last Sat., surprising as they tend to slowly drop).
Sunday just barely lower in admissions, but noticeably lower in gross (pretty good call, charlie!).

Third weekend remained above 2 million admissions (8,000 more than estimated, too). Just stunning. More than stunning.

So, it's looking to add ¥700-750 million ($6.5-7 million) / 550,000-600,000 more admissions today, Monday, unless it somehow slows down in the evening/night--which it most definitely won't since reservations are very high later on due to Tuesday bring a holiday.

And Tuesday, being a holiday, is going to at least come in 50% higher than today, likely earning ¥1-1.2 billion ($9.5-11.5 million) / 800,000-900,000 admissions (probably around this past Saturday's numbers). Roughly. It's unlikely to go much lower than that range if it does.

Therefore... after Tuesday, its 19th-day in release, its total will be around ¥17.5-17.8 billion ($167-170 million) / 13.2-13.4 million admissions. That pushes it up from 10th biggest film of all-time after 17-days, to 8th biggest film of all-time after 19-days.

It will need a sudden and serious collapse beginning Wednesday to miss ¥20 billion ($190 million+) / 15 million admissions after next Sunday, its 24th-day in release. It's likely to be a bit higher than that to become the 5th biggest film of all-time already. Just for reference.... it took Spirited Away 61-days to reach that milestone, which is the current record. Demon Slayer is going to reach this mark almost 3x faster than the old record, a mark that only four films have ever grossed.

That should be 5th biggest, as there are 4 films above ¥25 billion.

That long-term trajectory would line up nicely with my $150M 17 day and ¥20B 25 day goals from yesterday. Of course even if it’s a bit short on both, simply bonkers nutso level grosses.

The fastest to ¥25B chart will be hilarious.

Goal 1 is done and goal 2 is trivial.

Next let’s try beating Titanic by Labour Day :shades:

New here, long time lurker, first time poster. So is Demon Slayer a lock to become the highest grossing Japanese film ever at this rate? At least animated right? Seems like the train isn't slowing down...

Animated and overall are the same with Spirited Away on top. It’s not a lock, but likely, and looking likelier by the day.

I see! Thank you. That's crazy. Guess it's the perfect storm of a highly anticipated film, everything re: COVID, and just everything else. Spectacular to see :hahaha:

Should give Demon Slayer a try soon...

I was liking the even number of the $24m weekend figure, but that's the nittiest of picks. What a gob-smacking run.

Maybe I'm being way too optimistic but at this rate I don't see how it doesn't not only beat Spirited Away but literally explode its record. Like ¥40 billion explode.

Demon Slayer NT$116,472,000 ($4,072,450) weekend in Taiwan. That is huge. Taipei city was just 25% of nationwide, compared to 30-35% usually
