 Pleasant Historic Nominations?
Sorry, again, running a search for a thread that mentions the world nomination in the Oscar forum is like a needle in a haystack. So if this thread already exists and someone knows, please bump it up.
What are the most pleasant Nods for you in the History of the Oscars? Not necessarily just wins, since sometimes a nomination is already such a big deal, and I feel alot of note-worthy nominations are over looked because of the winner-takes-it-all syndrome.
Anyways, here are my top six and why:
6.Network - 1976 (Best Pic) - Uhhhh? I know I'll get nailed for this, but it should have won :-) With three acting wins and a best screenplay win, I always thought its closest comp came from All the President's Men, which I love too. But oh well. the reason i like this nom is how funny the idea is. Ready? Here goes...A man freaks out about how the media world has sold out. His company capitalizes on that freak-out session, in fact, selling it out. Hollywood laughs at their own selling-outedness, and nominate this movie to get it even more publicity. Bwahahaha! Its like loving citizen cane, only, with humour added.
5.The Triplettes of Belleville - 2004 (Best Animated Feature, Best Song) - Nice to see that a non 3d/Non japanese animation movie snuck in there. not only did I love that there wasn't a single spoken word through out the whole movie (except for the piano song and old dance skit) but the animation style really angaged me. Didn't think there was aplace for it in the Academy, but apparently there was.
4.Jane Campion - 1994 (Best Director Nom, Best Original Screenplay Win) - Second OWman. This was also an incredibly insightful movie that reminded me an awful lot of some great books including The Awakening and Hendrik Ibsen Plays. Also, only the second woman ever to accomplish this. Its a pretty big deal, when you consider it was ten years between her and Sophia, and 17 years between her and the first too.
3.Spellbound - 2002 (Best Documentary) - Surprisingly quiet and insightful. More tensions than any thriller or action movie that year. Instantly landed in my top 5 favorite docs ever.
2.Gosford Park - 2001 (Best Picture) - Clearly wasn't going to win, but I'm so happy Altman, perennially overlooked, got it. Its homage to the fact he will never win an Oscar, and will eventually settle for being awarded a life-time acheivement one. Nominated as director 5 times, and best pic 2 times, Gosford Park was nominated 26 years after his last best pic nod (Nashville). Nashville and gosford Park, coincidentally, stand 1 and 2 as my favorites from him.
1.Lina Wertmuller - 1977 (Best Director Nom) - Self explanatory on so many reasons.

Godsford park was such a boring and terrible film IMO.Network was really good though, but rocky and taxi driver were the best films that year.
My favorite nominations:
5.Edward james olmos getting nominated for best actor in Stand and Deliver
4.Babe getting a best pic nomination
3.Pat Morita getting nominated for the karate kid
2.(3 way tieJose Ferrer's being nominated 3 times,2 for best actor and one for best supporting actor. He won best actor for Cyrano de Bergerac.
Rita Moreno nominated and winning for west side story.
Benicio del toro being nominated 2 times and winning for traffic. Why did i choose those 3? Because
1.They are Puertorican
and 2.They are the only latinos to win in acting catagories.VIVA PUERTO RICO!!!!!
And my number 1 choice,Lo que le paso a santiago being nominated for best foreign film, the first and only puertorican film nominated for that award.

Oh, I've wanted to see Stand and Deliver for ages already. i don't even know what its about, but it used to be right next to me where i worked, with him in a white outfit behind a desk. I tend to pick movies I don't know about due to how striking their covers are...which i must say is pretty hit or miss of a method. What's Stand and Deliver about?
Gosford Park is great, but its like all Altman films, very dialogue heavy and you need to watch it three itmes. Trust me you will like it better the second time because then all the snips and quips make sense. You see how they fit in later on. Like when the daughter asks the maid to talk to her father, and the maid replies, why would she be anymore suited to do it than anyone else..there's that eye contact. When you already know the second time they're having an affair, you realize how beauitfully timed all those conversations are. I had to watch it even a third time to fully appreciate it.
3 is actually a very high number. I didn't realize, and didn't even know about Jose Ferrer. That's pretty good. I forgot about Benicio's win because that was the one Oscars I missed, and i missed all the movies that year because i wasn't living here. Is Traffic any good or just his acting in it was exceptional?

Let me just say how happy I am to find another person who likes Gosford Park, Dolce! It's a great movie that deserved it's nomination. And that's coming from someone who doesn't care for Robert Altman all that much. Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith deserved their noms and Mirren should've won. Emily Watson could have easily been nominated as well. All you Clive Owen fans should watch this also.
You are right, it should be seen 2-3 times to catch everything. Some people might see that as a minus but I see it as a plus. After Fellowship Of The Ring and Moulin Rouge, this was the most deserving picture nominee of 2001. What a great year for movies.
I'll think of some more historic nominations later....

Just a few, in no particular order....
1. Moulin Rouge! - I was very happy to see this nominated for picture and Nicole Kidman get her first Oscar nomination (she shoulda won!). It helped revive the musical genre. I just wish Baz Luhrman, Ewan McGregor, and Jim Broadbent had been nominated. Broadbent won in the same year for Iris, but I think this is the better performance.
2. Renee Zellweger's nomination for Bridget Jones' Diary - it's such a fun, funny performance. She deserved the nomination.
3. Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett's nominations for What's Love Got To Do With It - If you haven't seen this movie yet, go rent it. Now. The movie itself is so-so, but the leads are great. Bassett should have been the first black woman to win best actress, not Halle Berry (though Holly Hunter was unbeatable in the same year).
4. Fargo - For once, the Academy honored something a little off the beaten path with several nominations and two deserved wins - screenplay for the Coens and actress for Frances Mcdormand.

It's about a teacher who inspires his students to learn calculus and pass a test and such and such.
Olmos is good (he got the Oscar nomination), but I found the film to be one big cheeseball. Maybe it's because I watched the film dubbed in Spanish, but... meh. I'd say check it out, though. Others seem to like it.

That reminds me of faye dunaway and how important she was to so many great 70s pictures.

Some of the most pleasant Oscar nominations in the past include The Sixth Sense's nomination for Best Picture and Johnny Depp's nomination for Best Actor in POTC.

@ Archie. I just made an entire Faye bonus points list for movie mayhem! \:D/ She's top ten actresses ever, and maybe my favorite American one.
@Lecter, I was about to add Depp's nom for Pirates. Also because it was just such an eccentric role. In a comdey adveture. Not the most recognized genre in the awards. I wasn't nearly so psyched for his nom this year. Not cause I don't love him, but because the role was more expected. Captain Jack Sparrow was just the gem of that year for me and I think surprised everyone.
Also, I was pretty happy about Redford getting a nom for The Sting. It's the only acting nom he's ever received.
And, when Topol got a nom for best actor in 1971! That was awesome. I grew up on that movie. Used to sing the songs to jump rope at school. It actually really was a great role on his part. So that was a very fun nom...especially with his name being, well, Topol...

Which is quite surprising, as I've always found him to be anything but a great actor. Loved him in Flash Gordon and the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, but I would have never considered him to be Oscar caliber anymore than I would Brigitte Neilsen.

Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery, and Oprah Winfrey getting recognized for their terrific acting work in The Color Purple is very commendable. Although it would have been nice had one of them (*cough* Whoopi pre-Oda Mae Brown) won - same with their winless movie.

I completely agree about Gosford Park. I've seen it about 6 times. What an amazing achievement in cinematography, ensemble acting, individual acting, music, screenplay, and direction. Maggie Smith stole EVERY scene. In my top 5 of 2001. BTW, 2001 was an AWESOME year, like 1999.

I was praying for Maggie to win it that year. She was hilarious. Snippy. 1999 ['98 movies] still stands in my mind as an incredibly tight year as far as competition. I liked almost everything that won, the winner least of all, and that doesn't mean I can't sit back and appreciate what Titanic did have to contribute that year.
I want to add I was pretty psyched when Paul Simon got his first oscar nod. That was kind of memorable too.

I'm not sure if I feel it's pleasant or not, but how about Jaye Davison's nomination for The Crying Game? That was pretty historic. As a matter of fact, The Crying Game's many nomination were all pretty historic. It was breakthrough for independent films.
Two other Gosford Park fans! =D> But I was rooting for Helen Mirren over Maggie Smith.

I've seen Gosford Park 5 times. I always think all the 5 movies nominated in 2001 were at least good (even A Beautiful Mind). Philippe, in his tiny role, always ruins the movie for me.

I actually didn't think Ryan Phillippe was all that terrible, especially being among over 50 British actors...and Bob Balaban.
