Re: Cats predictions
I don't think there's any middle ground with this movie. Either it BOMBS or it becomes a Miserables-sized hit.

Re: Cats predictions
It's one of the most watched broadway musicals, no?
But it looks atrocious.
So... who the hell knows.

Re: Cats predictions
I'm going to assume most people reacting to it negatively have no idea what Cats is beyond being a Broadway musical. I don' think the footage itself looked bad. It just would have been preferable to have gone with costumes for the characters over the glaring CGI.

Ngl I audibly cackled when the first cat person's face appeared.
This is going to give nightmares to every 8 year old that sees the trailer before another movie.

Re: Cats predictions
I think it will do decent. 100m+ but no huge breakout. Probably less than ales Mis.

Never saw the musical so not sure what’s happening in that trailer but Hudson is nailing that song

How big of a role does Taylor have? My interest begins and ends there.

O wrote: Best comment I saw on Youtube: "I think we all owe Sonic an apology." Agree with that . This looks HORRIBLE. And I like musicals. Never want to watch it unless I hear it's hilariously bad then maybe with friends for a laugh. Maybe a 60 Million or so gross? Most comments on it are bad but whatever fans the show has will probably show up for it. I've heard the show is bad though so I don't know how it has even lasted so long.

Re: Cats predictions
I am wondering how much of the WTF-ness may pique people's interest, but I assume most of those people would just as soon opt for streaming.

Re: Cats predictions
I'm going with 125 to 150 million. Holiday legs can be good to crappy musicals and the uncanny valley.

Re: Cats predictions
I was wondering how they were gonna pull this off... looks rough.
It'll probably do decent with its date but probably not much over 100m. Not familar with the music but maybe that'll make the film work?

Re: Cats predictions
I saw the trailer in front of TLK today expecting the absolute worst, but honestly it seemed like the majority of the crowd was really into the trailer. The kids in the audience had the most vocal reactions, but none of them sounded like they were creeped out or scared by it by it at all. That being said I still have no idea how well this will do. Anywhere from $70M to $100M sounds about right, although if it ends being a real crowdpleaser with great reviews those holiday legs should carry it even higher.

Re: Cats predictions
The past 7 or so years have shown that there is a big audience for musicals during the holidays. This looks weird but it also looks outlandish and unique enough to seem like an event. I think it will do $125m+ unless reviews/reaction is bad.

Re: Cats predictions
Yeah of reviews are good it can do North of $150m. There's a large audience for musical events these days so this one has generated enough buzz/curiosity (yes even if negative/mixed) that it should resonate at Christmas.

Re: Cats predictions
This could end up playing like The Greatest Showman: flop opening and great legs through the holidays and into the desolate wasteland of January.
I know almost nothing about Cats: The Musical. Is this something that tourists ate up on Broadway? It feels like something that plays up to people in town and who want to see a big broadway musical but don't know any actual good broadway musicals, so they see a name they recognize. If that's true, I'm sure this will play to the same crowd, as they won't be the same people that commented online about how awful it looks.

The show is just a series of almost unrelated scenes of cats describing themselves and then at the end one of the cats goes to heaven. Because there’s only room in cat heaven for one cat apparently.

Re: Cats predictions
I also have no idea what Cats is about but I do recall in the 80s seeing ads for productions here in Oz and it was a big deal. Up there with Les Mis and Phantom.

Re: Cats predictions
I remember it was the 90's when the musical came to Hong Kong. The song "Memory" was very memorable. But Les Mis and Phantom of the Opera had more staying power in popular culture in HK, probably because they are classic stories.
