Next franchise to have a $200m opener?
So far the only franchises that have had a $200m opener is MCU, Star Wars and Jurassic World.
In the next few years, what other franchises do you think can generate a $200m opener?
Some candidates: Frozen 2 [think this will happen actually] DC [WW1984 is a long shot, The Batman if positive hype around it maybe] Avatar [probably not but who knows]

Re: Next franchise to have a $200m opener?
Frozen 2 definitely could. I think WW84 is better than a long shot. It had some of the best WOM of any CBM. Though that may depend on if Birds of Prey is any good. DC can't keep making average movies and expect huge BO.
I'd say no to Avatar 2-whatever.
Incredibles 2 couldn't do it, so I don't see a Pixar film doing it.
Maybe if they did another Harry Potter, with the original cast. Depending on the damage Fantastic Beasts does to the brand.
Batman could definitely do it. But that's probably like 40/60 right now.

I think either Frozen or Lion King will do it, but not both. Would be surprised by anything next year, unless the Nolan is doing Dark Knight 4 or Harry Potter 9. Pokemon 2 is a candidate for 2022 or whenever.

If Frozen opens to 200 mil it's gunning for The Force Awakens

Idk about Lion King. Think $150m will happen but idk.
Cursed Child with the original HP cast would open $225m+.

None of the films in this thread so far will make $200m+ OW.

Frozen and Avatar are the only ones with a realistic shot.
Also, Star Wars is never seeing $200m OW again. That ship has sailed, as commanded by Kathleen Kennedy and her Komissars.

Nah. Avatar is not loved or anticipated on any level like Avengers and Star Wars. And Frozen only appeals to girls.

I still think Ep 9 will open close to Ep 8. It wont fall under $200m.

Frozen the billion dollar highest grossing film of 2013 over the likes of IRON MAN 3 WW would never have achieved it's success if it 'only' solely appealed to girls. A $200 million opening is only unlikely because, personally, I can't see any animated film achieving that (though if one could prove me wrong it's Frozen 2).

Re: Next franchise to have a $200m opener?
I still give it to Toy Story 4. Needs about a 9% bump on TI2 to get there. It's literally the only franchise that has consistently increased domestically, and been a critical darling for nearly 25 years now.
Also TLK isn't really part of a franchise. So it doesn't really count. But as a film I'd say it's very likely too.

Toy Story 4 will open under 60m before it opens to 200m.

I have loved Star Wars since I was 4 years old and unlike the dark corners of Reddit I understand that commercial success for these films is integral to future instalments and spin offs, so I'd be ok with the compromise between Kathleen's questionable creative decisions and successful trilogy that leads to more interesting films.... but I think the brand is severely damaged after the last two films. It's not the mega event it once was. I hope to be proven wrong.

Re: Next franchise to have a $200m opener?
Well if we're talking franchises, it's the only real one that has any type of chance. Each film has about an 11% increase in total over the last adjusted, Which would put Toy Story 4 at about 535 million, and using BATB that would put it around 188 opening. I think if the marketing really steps up over the next two months it could definitely sway higher and reach the point. If not it'll be SW, then who knows.
It would have been Spiderman if not for the Tuesday opening. That'll easily see the Iron Man 3 type bump now.
