Is anyone else's connection going really slow right now?
ANyways, this is what I thought of it. I need to kind of compare it to the first one.
I would consider NOTLD to be more a psychological thriller. The black and white, the lack of humor, the very claustrophic envirnment and the kind of neo-realist approach right down to when they randomly shoot him in the head at the end. That one to me was a bit more frighteneing, but the on the other hand the blond girl was so annoying I for some reason was irritated the whole time. There's also no realy range in character experiences in Night. The black guy just takes charge right away, the blonde girl freaks out, the mother cares about her kid. The only one that is less easily defines is the guy that eventually dies in the truck with his girl friend. Even then, it was hard to really get into anyone them because they kind of were two dimensional.
Dawn was fun. The music was way campier, the space was much bigger so there was a lot more action. It played out more like a gory action movie than a horror movie. I wasn't really all that scared, and I enjoyed the different things the characters go through. At first when the girl freaked out I was like, shit, another freaked out girl for the whole movie. oh brother.

But then she's like, gimmi a gun! I knew it was going to be pretty loud from then on in. They all basically run around shooting at stuff. That mall was a gold mine, and they're pretty good about finally closing it off.
Then you get to see them go through extreme boredom and depression, especially after they kill thier friend.

But hey...at least I understand your sig now. They're basically cooped up in jail. Even if its a nice cell (I like how furnished they made their abode) and even if its worse outside because of the zombies, people can't live like zombies (or that's what I think Romero was trying to say). They go nuts.
What I didn't get was the cyclists. What was up with that???? They've survived for two months in such horric things and they some how still haven't learned to see a good thing when they have it. They must have realized how safe and barricaded the place was. Why not ask for a helicopter pick up? Or get up on the roof and then go inside? Then they just run around looting like mad as though they're a bunch of bored punks instead worry about surviving, or setting up a home. I didn't mind them but they were very unconvincing to me. All the four original cast were actually pretty convincing because they fight, bicker, distrust, trust, become friends, get irritated, normal stuff like that. WHy didn't they pre-emptiviely offer to help the cyclists get in safely?
Or, why not stay up in their little abode until the zombies eventually kills of the cyclists, and then try to barricade the place up again? Anyways, that's a minor detail. Didn't bug me too much, and made it pretty easy to not mind when they're stomchs are pulled open and dug into like bowls of pasta (ewwwwwww) Admittedly, for how good I was doing up until that part, I then proceeed to pull my knees up to my chest so that they could block most of the screen. Once inawhile I peeked over them...that didn't last very long.
Anyhow. I see where the next one is going already!!!!!! Basically all these zombies are ocming to the mall out of habit. Because they lived in the area and came so often that they kind of milled around there even as zombies. Then when he remembered the old entrance and has a gun in his hand at the end, that's about the fact that he was so accustomed to it he remembered shooting and their hideout sort of unconsciously.
The zombies get smarter with each movie don't they? Because the remaining survivors are becoming more and more accustomed to using guns and making strategies and hiding out that when they become zombies they vaguely remember how to use tools, guns, hide out, and make plans? Am I right? \:D/
I enjoyed the second one more. MOstly because the first one was trying to be Hitchcockian, but if I'd wanted to see that, I would have watch Rear Window or Rope. Dawn is just all out good fun with a seriously over-the-top gore 30 minutes there at the end!
