It is difficult to gauge because we're bigger film fans than most people, so we know it isn't the last one. But the trailers make it seem like "the end". The stakes make it seem serious. Thanos is on Earth. It feels like the ultimate movie to end the series. Not sure how much the "Part I" and "Part II" seeped into the public sphere before Marvel changed it.

Its not the OW record anymore but the legs of IW that are in big question. Even with $250m+ OW IW needs 2.5 multiplier to reach $625m mark which is not guaranteed obviously because of some audience being disappointed that this is not the final movie. BP is looking to cross $650m mark at the current pace.

I think at the end of it, we should just stop underestimating the MCU. Every damn time we do this and every damn time we see these films outperform our expectations. So let's just all agree that IW will make more than BP ... as we all thought a month ago anyway.

The issue with that competition though is that I feel they're all set up to under perform with how buzz is going around them right now.

That while IW, will immediately bring people back to the now beloved Wakanda and some heros are ought to die in this one, and I think that's going to pull a winning gross over BP to it.

Good point. At this rate it is foolish to have doubts about them when they have consistently delivered big hits after big hits, and I don't see that slowing down anytime soon.

I suppose you're right. Though Ragnarok was underestimated because of Dark World, and also kind of underestimated in the sense that only a few saw that it would outperform Justice League.

Most people expected Ragnarok to increase over Dark World though there were doubts of his much because the later is believed to be one of the weakest MCU movies.

Everyone expected it to increase over Dark World. But I saw plenty of $250-$290m predictions. Not many said "It will gross $315m and out-gross Justice League". Of course, everyone said exactly that in the week before its release, but then we all know those predictions aren't worth a damn (and are more like projections with how accurate tracking can be these days).

So Captain Marvel then...
