Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
They also gave short shrift to Maz Kanata in Last Jedi. After Force Awakens, I thought they would expand on this Yoda-like character, especially given that she appears to be the same species as Snoke. Perhaps that will all come together in IX.

I'd like to know the answer to how Maz ended up with the saber to begin with.

That isn't to say that he had to live in TLJ. I'm totally fine with killing Snoke. But they could have spent more time prior to the throne scene establishing some context of who he is. If anything, adding that context inflates his significance and makes his death even more impactful. I'm just saying - does the "how" really affect our story in any way? It's the same end result. The First Order are successfully seeking control of the galaxy with a large army, despite the Empire failing 30 years prior. We still might get an answer in IX, but it's just likely that while good exists, an opposite but balanced version of evil exists alongside of it. Luke got stronger, so did Snoke.

I think that is true, and again, going forward, the new Jedi must learn to focus on the Force itself rather that adhere to a strict, unbreakable code. I greatly hope Qui Gon Jinn is in the next episode

Magnus wrote: It's not NECCESSARY but it doesn't mean it isn't bad storytelling. I disagree. He just was not interesting in Force Awakens, much like a lot of the plot elements in that movie. Here he is interesting in that he henders Kylo from becoming into his own. For the Snoke fans out there, I'm sure JJ will give a little bit of exposition (or not because he dropped the ball already on that one in Force Awakens) and Disney will do an animated series like Rebels that explores Luke's training of Ben Solo with Snoke as the primary villain.

People have been building them up for so long, but they were a non factor in this and I have no reason to believe Abrams cares enough for them to have any impact in IX.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I'm curious as to what most people consider the climax scene of the movie. For me it's Snoke getting killed and the short lights aver battle that follows. The movie should have ended with Kylo extending his hand to Rey. Everything after that including Luke's suicide should never have happened.

The Falcon flying at lightspeed followed by a damn good epilogue.

From Luke’s entrance into the base to him becoming one with the force (The Spark and The Last Jedi on the soundtrack) aren’t very good or near perfect, they are perfect. I did not notice them while watching the film. I'm listening to them now. They're not bad but what's so special about them?

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The beautiful way in which Williams blends his prior themes with new material or even using the older themes and making them sound new.
The Spark
0:47 - Binary Sunset which immediately blends into... 0:57 - Leia’s theme which segues into... 2:02 - Han & Leia’s love theme when Luke hands her the dice, which leads into... 2:16 - Vader’s theme repurposed into a heroic/badass theme for Luke. The strings from the violins at around 2:22 are beautiful and dramatic.
It’s everything I’d want musically in a reunion between Luke & Leia.
The Last Jedi
1:04 - Choirs! 1:21 - The realization by Luke that he has served his purpose 1:50 - Luke is the ultimate Jedi. And again, VIOLINS! 2:22 - Choirs again
They’re sorrowful and beautiful, while at the same time joyous and hopeful.
If there is one track I’m going to revisit over and over again from the soundtrack, it’s The Spark. It perfectly encapsulates why Williams is the heart of this universe.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
the Laura Dern/Oscar Isaac stuff was awful. So on the nose about the "Toxic masculinity" thing it is not even funny
the Rose/Finn stuff is boring as hell. Rose was one of the worst new characters you could think of, and then we also had the on the nose animal rights stuff.

Neither of the subplots were bad. They just weren’t as good as the main storyline

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
they should have killed Finn at the end to add some gravitas. His character is just pointless and adds nothing. Poe should have been the male lead from the beginning

They should have shown more sympathy to the space nazis I guess. How dare they suggest that their non-combative citizens are also terrible people. That is offensive!

Magnus wrote: It’s not offensive it was just poorly executed and came off as lame and unimportant. I like how people think that people who have issues wit this film are right wing rather than just people who have genuine issues with basic story telling that this film lacks. I dismissed that part of the criticism at first and even thought Groucho’s thread was silly. But it does keep popping up. Parts of the film were dull - fair criticism. You didn’t like the direction they took your childhood heroes - nerdy and possesive, but thats your opinion. The film being too progressive - what Star Wars movies were they watching before this?

I also watched The Force Awakens last night, and contrary to my original opinion, its actually been improved by The Last Jedi. Knowing that most of the unanswered threads go nowhere made it feel like a complete movie rather than just a set up for what’s to come.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I got out for a second viewing of TLJ yesterday and my opinion didn't improve (or decline). The best part remains the bomber run on the Dreadnought - that is a very nicely constructed space battle action sequence. I hadn't realize that the gunner on the last surviving bomber who kicked the ladder to retrieve the bomb door remote control (why don't they have Siri to perform those tasks?) is Paige Tico, Rose Tico's older sister. That's quite a coincidence! Unfortunately the whole screenplay after that sequence goes nowhere slow. By the time Kylo and Luke were facing off, I was having trouble keeping my eyes open. This entire middle episode's story is really much ado about nothing.
