I wasn't sure Adaptation was an Indie...Jonze was the NEW director once Being John Malkovich came out...
Kaufman's still an "indie" writer though. So I'd count Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine.
What about Fargo? If we're going to allow movies created after the director was put on the map, there's a whole shitload of Coen Brothers movies I want on that list.

After much conferring with Torrino, we've decided Buena Vista social Club be evaluated as an American Documentary decause it was Ry Cooder's project.

I think our guidelines for whether a film is an indie or not should be this: if it was made outside of big studio control with no big studio money involved, it's indie.

MUCH conferring? One post!
Ya. Put it on the list. By midnight, we'll have a hundred. I'll put a link to this in my profile so, perhaps it won't just be the three of us suggesting films.

Sorry. I haven't seen any Lynch films outside of The Straight Story and Mulholland Dr.
It's a horror film, no?
What about PJ's old stuff? And Raimi's? Come on. I'm disappointed!
The Evil Dead

I second The Evil Dead.
I'd also like to add Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn.
I'm not a huge fan of PJ'S earlier stuff, actually. It's funny and entertaing and gory and all, but it's not that great.

Gah! Hell NO. I thought Mullholland Dr. was okay. But thats about it I can't stand his mmovies. That reminds me though, do Altman flicks count? I love him, but I don't know which production companies he worked under for Nashville and Gosford Park.
Torri, i have it in my sig too. No one is going to look in here unless we get the forum name changed to more appropriately encompass the indie part of it. I think the concpet of an entire forum just dedicated to subtitles is freaking people out. lol

The two disagree! For the first time...in a...long time...from what I've seen.
You couldn't stand The Straight Story?
And, yeah, I'd count Altman flicks. Also, what about Strictly Ballroom? Not a favorite of mine, but it was the film that put Luhrmann on the map.
What was Ridley Scott's first production?

I'm dissapointed with you, Galia. Lynch is my favorite director of all time. Hey, did you ever watch Wild At Heart?

I haven't seen Straight Story. Only Erasurhead, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet and Mullholland Drive. That was more than enough opportunities for him to prove he was worth further viewings from me. He didn't.
Yay Altman, okay, I nominate
Nashville
Gosford Park
and strictly Ballroom I already nominated in the Foreign section. Its Australian through and through. Australian director, cast, filming location, and I think even most of the money for production was Australian. Miramax was just its American distributer. Don't quote me on this, but if you loved it as much as I did, its awaiting a nom in the other thread.

The Straight Story shares almost no similarities with Mulholland Drive. Rent it. Seriously. It's, well, "Straight"!

I'll second Eternal Sunshine
And I want to add:
Ghost World
Dogville
Breaking the Waves
Dancer in the Dark (hehe there is no pattern stop looking for one!)
Donnie Darko
Requiem for a Dream
Are we allowed to add foreign independent movies here?
If so, Y Tu Mama Tambien, because it IS one of the best independent movies I've seen.

Still Up for grabs:
28/35/42 Up
Best in Show
Breaking the Waves
Cane Toads
Dancer in the Dark
Dazed and Confused
Dead Man
Dogville
Down by Law
Eraserhead
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn
Fargo

Gosford Park

Koyaanisqatsi
The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg
Nashville
The Passion of the Christ
Roger & Me
Smoke Signals
The Straight Story
Thin Blue Line
This is Spinal Tap
Times of Harvey Milk
Trainspotting
The Usual Suspects
Waiting for Guffman
Plus feel free to add, we're not stopping 'til we reach 100.
I'm adding Fog of War. I find it impossible with this and esp. Thin Blue Line that we still don't have even one Errol Morris flick that's made the cut.

DEFINITELY confirming:
The Usual Suspects (one of the best endings ever)
The Straight Story (the final scene almost moved me to tears)
Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn (almost as good as the original)
Fargo (my 2nd favorite Coens movie)
I've also seen The Passion of the Christ and Dead Man. The former is too flawed to make the cut for me, the latter didn't click with me despite Depp's great performance, so, no.

Let's see, hmmm...
Since Lecter has already seconded (secondeded...?) The Straight Story and Fargo, I'll suggest...
Bowling for Columbine?

Dolce, you must see The Straight Story. It is fantastic. If I were to make a list of my favorite performances of all-time, Richard Farnsworth's would most definitely be near the top.

I second that. The Straight Story is a great movie with a very good lead performance. The movie is very slow, that is true, but it never drags and never gets boring. The only thing I really didn't like about the movie was Sissy Spacek and her character, but other than that, the movie was really good.

Hm, didn't know Adaptation was an Indie.

I second that.
Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned...
21 Grams
Pulp Fiction (I believe this was in Indie... Right? )
The Good Girl
