From Kogyotsushin, look like Your Name finally end its theatre run after one full year at 25.03 billion yen. It is still destroying home-video record, however...

Well, I wouldn't say "destroying records" but is is in the top 10 best-selling anime discs ever. And we're almost definitely going to be able to say it's the best-selling non-Ghibli anime disc of all time, which is a damned impressive record.

It needs a bit over 40k more to pass Evangelion 2.22 and Majo no Takkyuubin which should put it in 7th. Seems doable to me.

Since some of these are quite old in terms of home video sales tracking (i.e. pre-Oricon) the numbers are rough but:

01. Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi [4.2 million]
02. Tonari no Totoro [1.9 million]
03. Mononoke-hime [1.5 million]
04. Howl no Ugoku Shiro [1.4 million]
05. Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa [1.1 million]
06. Kaze no Tani no Naussica [987 thousand]
07. Gake no Ue no Ponyo [945 thousand]
08. Evangelion 2.22 [839 thousand]
09. Majo no Takkyuubin [836 thousand]
10. Kimi no Na wa [797,840 week 5, when the full data for the week is out the LE BDs should also rank and get it right around 800 thousand]

One important caveat: all of the above numbers include re-releases. Typically we compare first release to first release and all, but for older releases, disc (or uh, tape back in the day) sales weren't as much of a thing. A lot of the Ghibli films racked up a ton of sales in early/mid 00s DVD re-releases. Almost 800k of Laputa's known total is from a 2002 DVD for example.

So it becomes largely meaningless to compare sales at this level without including re-releases. Besides there's zero reason to expect KnNw to be as back-loaded as those titles so it won't throw things off to much. I guarantee it doesn't have, like, another 500k sitting in the tank for future re-releases. Especially for a film more aimed at teens than kids.

Since I don't think I've missed anything I guess we can say KnNw is #10, and has a very realistic shot of taking #8, though Ponyo looks out of reach unless KnNw attains long-term classic status and has a big re-release years from now or something.

As for non-anime discs, I think there's on a tiny handful of western CG animated films ahead of it: Frozen, Nemo, Monsters Inc... maybe a few others, but since I have no interest in western animation and most definitely not in CG, I'm not as knowledgeable about those. I also have no idea if any live action films or concert discs have ever put up disc numbers to challenge the top anime and CG titles. Certainly I don't think there would be many.

[Last caveat: These are of course the numbers reported by video sales tracking companies, which are never the full number. KnNw alone is known to have shipped 1.2 million, though whether they've all sold through yet or not, I don't know. But it's the best/only way to compare that we have.]

Frozen and Finding Nemo sold over 1 million copies, and I'm pretty sure Monsters, Inc. did as well (either with or without re-releases).

I'll do some research to see if any individual concert DVD has ever sold over 1 million copies. There should be a short list of contenders (B'z, Mr. Children, EXILE, Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, SMAP, Southern All Stars, Dreams Come True) that may have possibly managed it at some point, though it's unlikely. No western artist or band would have been popular enough to do it.

And I don't believe any live-action film has ever sold over 1 million copies on home video, domestic or otherwise.

The first weekend of September is usually devoid of any significant opener, thus it's typically an uneventful weekend with Summer officially over.

Sekigahara repeated atop the box office, and is well on course to exceed ¥2 billion (~$20 million) -- solid for a film released at the very end of Summer. It has sold over 900,000 admissions after nine days in release.

Wonder Woman remains in second place, posting a reasonable decline in its sophomore frame. The film wasn't able to breakout of the typical range for the vast majority of DC films, and will be aiming for a total around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million). Not bad, but also quite boring.

Despicable Me 3 will likely feel the result of school being back in session this upcoming week, but before then, it was able to dethrone Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales after its seventh weekend to become the #1 film of Summer 2017. It's going to exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million), almost tripling the total of its predecessor. The third entry in the series has exceeded a multiplier of 11 as well, which matches/exceeds all but the upper tier of imported animated films.

I Want To Eat Your Pancreas continues to be one of the biggest highlights of Summer 2017, delivering yet another strong weekend hold. After six weeks in release, the bittersweet romance has sold over 2.2 million admissions. As a result, it has achieved a multiplier over 11 and could approach a multiplier near 13 (possibly reaching the Top 20/25 since 2000).

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin V debuted in seventh place, selling a solid 49,398 admissions on only 35 screens. The fifth film in the series achieved a notable, and incredibly high, avg. ticket price of ¥1,877 ($17.05).

Spider-Man: Homecoming has stabilized a little bit but it may be too late and could miss the ¥3 billion milestone (a mark no Spider-Man film has failed to reach), unless the mid-September holidays (Silver Week) can get it there. I have to say its performance has been underwhelming, overall.

Skiptrace rounded out the Top 10 in a very competitive battle, selling 32,844 admissions on 155 screens and 49,677 since opening on Friday. The action-comedy starring Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville marks a very rare occasion of a Chinese film making the Top 10, though since it's also a Hong Kong and United States production, that puts asterisk next to it.

Yeah. They're not the absolute latest numbers (since I don't track CG/western films) but should be within a few 10ks at most, so rounded they're:
Frozen ~2.5 million
Nemo ~2 million
Monsters Inc ~1.6 million

Yeah, it'll exceed the mark after Sunday.

Average, borderline good. Its opening weekend was impressive, perhaps very impressive, but its legs were a little weak. A total over ¥7 billion would have looked more satisfactory than its eventual ~¥6.8 billion total.

Unless it receives an unlikely push during Silver Week in two weeks, it may end up as the lowest-grossing film in the franchise -- it's going to be very close. However, if you consider its drops in the already established markets when the original trilogy was released, its ~24% decline from Pirates 4 in Japan is reasonable and a bit better than most aforementioned markets.

Dunkirk is outpacing Interstellar by a considerable margin in terms of pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, and depending on how old it skews (50+ demo greatly reduces avg. ticket prices), it could enjoy a debut perhaps twice as high.

War films generally perform well in Japan, especially if they're related to World War II, and well-received ones often develop great legs. If Nolan's latest does debut around the ¥400 million mark this weekend, I could see it certainly reach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) or perhaps ¥3 billion (~$30 million) if its reception is strong enough. Silver Week is coming up as well, which will provide a nice boost for the box office, too.

Dunkirk ended up experiencing a fairly big Sunday drop and came in a bit below expectations, but its debut is still 66% higher than Interstellar. Nolan's latest sold 220,149 admissions across 464 screens.

War films generally perform well in Japan, especially if they're related to World War II, and well-received ones often develop great legs. If Nolan's latest catches on, I could see it reach a ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) total.

The Third Murderer performed within expectations, selling a solid 179,256 admissions over the weekend on 314 screens. The film will end up with a total around ¥1.2/1.3 billion ($11/12 million), fair enough for a standard early September release.

Wonder Woman hasn't been able to find an audience outside of the usual superhero crowd, and is now experiencing the poor legs nearly all of them receive. It's unlikely to reach ¥1.5 billion now, and will have to settle for ~¥1.3 billion ($11/12 million).

I really misjudged Before We Vanish; it bombed, barely making the Top 10 and selling just 31,243 admissions over the weekend across 181 screens.

It began this weekend, but the full effect on the box office will occur over the upcoming weekdays.

Studios had been boosting Silver Week the past few years with at least one major release, but this year's is unfortunately barren. Alien: Covenant was the only major wide release, and I don't think it'll even debut at #1 (maybe as low as third...).

I'll have Weekend Estimates up tomorrow.

Weekend Actuals will be posted in an hour or so. The Silver Week holidays delayed them a bit.

This weekend was, unfortunately, the worst for the mid-September holiday weekend since the market began promoting it heavily with the Silver Week holidays (2012/2013). The third weekend of September is typically the strongest weekend of the entire Fall season, but I think this year will be an exception -- at least it better be, otherwise this Fall will be dreadful.

Dunkirk didn't hold as well as I was expecting, but it was enough to claim a second weekend atop the box office. Considering the so-so second weekend decline, I'm not sure legs will be anything more than just "good", but a total over ¥2 billion ($20 million) is still in play.

Alien: Covenant failed to pull in any fans of the original Alien films, and it didn't come anywhere close to matching the debut of Prometheus either. Ridley Scott's latest sold a mediocre 138,297 admissions over the weekend frame across 694 screens. I expect it'll still reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone only due to the strong weekdays this week from Silver Week, but only barely.

Despicable Me 3 should have faded some by now, but the lack of any family or children fare at the market at the moment is giving it a late boost as it managed an increase in its ninth weekend of release. It exceeded ¥7 billion on Monday (yesterday), setting another record by becoming the only non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film to ever reach the milestone. I also misreported the films' admissions last weekend in the Chart Updates, but that'll be corrected this week.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
Impressive for DM3. I assume its performance in general is also due to the lack of strong family competition this summer. Pixar's Cars 3 faded pretty fast, and local animated competition also didn't seem as strong as last year.

The Finding Dory number still perplexes me. It was a strong sequel to a beloved film (was the highest grossing foreign animation until Frozen) and had themes that should have resonated with Japanese audiences. Why did it drop so hard from the original when sequels to Toy Story and Monsters Inc were received very well? Toy Story 3 was the franchise peak, and Monsters University hardly dropped at all from its predecessor.

Is this a bad sign for Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4?
