Looks like WB releasing Annabelle in summer was a good idea after all. Shows that a heavily anticipated movie will open big no matter when it's released.

As HUGE as this is for It it's not exactly surprising to me either. Like Magnus I also predicted around $13M from previews and with that being pretty much dead on I expect $35M to be the floor and $40M to be a very realistic goal. Irma is going to take some steam out of it over the weekend due to so many theatres shutting down, but I still believe $90M+ will happen although I'm still kind of hoping it crosses $100M some kind of way.

Yeah, this has to get to $100m. C'mon, Yanks! Do something worthwhile.

KJ has this realization about twice a year.

It's a good point. Studios simply need to work harder at offering quality products. Otherwise, I'm fine with waiting until I can watch it on Amazon or Netflix.

I think $90m is probably the most we'll see this weekend. NFL is still a factor though live viewership of games has been declining.

I'm seeing reviewers mentioning how they will see it more than once. I'm seeing it again tonight too.

I have a few co-workers who can't get their SO to go for fear of clowns. Guess it's more of an issue to people than I realized.

Also, this September will finally end the stupid notion that September is a dead month. films can open huge at any month. Studios need to stop thinking they can't.

Every month except January, September, and October has given us a $130+ million opener. It's kind of nuts that before this weekend September and October couldn't even have a $60+ million opener. IT will end up making more in its opening weekend than all but two May openers made in their entire runs. Crazy.

And Irma is also going to completely kill business in most of Florida tomorrow and Sunday and maybe slow it elsewhere with people following the storm, which is a bit of a shame. But maybe it'll mean a softer-than-expected drop next weekend?

Reports suggest Irma could shave 3-5% off business this weekend, which will certainly make a difference. With the reviews and what seems like excellent WOM, I would expect a good hold (for the genre) next weekend, perhaps dropping only 50%. This is an event film and will remain so for awhile.

This is true, I'm seeing almost nothing but positive notices for it so far, and BO.com's Pos:Neg Twitter ratio is up today from the last two days, which is always promising. Combine that with it becoming an event I can see it having a great second weekend drop followed by a bigger third weekend drop (which seems to be emerging as a trend, as WOM spreads faster and faster these days).

I think the studios have realised it. Hence why blockbusters are more spread out throughout the year with less tent poles left for the summer. They just havnt perfected it yet.

So I mentioned I was watching it tonight. A friend from work agreed to check it out. She ended up being so so about it. She'd never even seen the tv miniseries. Only saw one trailer...I was like...you going in blind lady.

Anyway, I was in a 290 seat theatre. Pretty full @ 7PM. The theatre also had their XD showing at 725 and that was already half full when I checked in the afternoon ticket purchases. Double anyway, the crowd was ridiculous. They ate it up. Quite a cross section of folks. Old folks down to freaking newborns 3 chairs away from me. Damn parents but they weren't the annoying ppl. There was this lady with a nice laugh...until you hear it 20x during scenes that aren't even supposed to illicit laughs. Crowd ate it up as I said and when they saw Chapter One there was some what felt like fake groans like...really or maybe they really didn't know this was just Part One. I think they'll show up for Part Two. Oh, and there was multiple spontaneous claps and applause at the end.

Well, apparently the NFL ratings last night were the lowest for opening night in five years despite being a Patriots game. I really wouldn't be surprised if It had more of an impact on it than the other way around.
