out even with the good reviews (many are no doubt overly hyperbolic like a lot of Marvel movies) it is not reaching SM3. That movie had some of the most insane hype ever.

That's the thing you don't need to have similar hype today to reach $151m mark. Some of the blockbuster with no hype can reach $100m in Summer. I remember TF4 being one of the case recently. Even MCU's GotG didn't look like it will do $94m OW.

Somewhat agree, but there is a chasm of difference between a $100m opening and a $150m opening.

I agree the examples of $150m aren't as many thus I cannot provide those but Spidey is a series with bigger name and there is a potential to surprise. I don't think its a guarantee as well but if something that can surprise this summer OW wise is this movie.

But look at who made the club. It's bound to fail.

SM3 would be a $210-220m opener today when you factor in 3D, extra IMAX, theater brand PLF, and general ticket price inflation from 2007 to now. $151m is not what it used to be.

With Despicable Me 3 possibly performing well under expectations I'm confident this will open to $125M+, but I still don't see it going much higher than 140. Great reviews, the Marvel Brand and strong family appeal will push it, however I don't feel I will reach uber-blockbuster status, especially with WW just breaking out.

The reviews are very good and that could get few more casual fans out over OW. The stage is set for a movie to breakout after a disappointing June and this can easily shine. Though I agree with Dil my only concern is that the last (two) movies that over-performed are also superhero movies thankfully though it looks a little different tonally than those though if last year is an indication the market can handle multiple BIG superhero movie openings.

I have to agree with Dil but I also agree with your points about why it's due for a breakout JS. I'm on the fence, lol. I won't join but I'm hoping this succeeds. This has been getting some early strong reviews. Although not like the first two Spider-Man (with Tobey Maguire and James Franco, of course), it's certainly the best since SM2, which was awesome!

Despite the presales being on par with WW but 45% below GOTG2 according to Box Office Theory, grim22 from BOT also said that BD was half as good as Chips; yet, it killed it in it's OW by 2.5 times the amount. I'm still optimistic it will definitely be above $125M for its OW thanks to the presence of RDJ.

I think at least $15M. It's July and this time frame has a big difference in the number of schools in session compared to early June.

I know I made this thread, but I feel pretty much no hype for this at all.

Here in Oz, its opening day doubled TASM2 (not saying much) and ranks as follows:

In the mixed superhero stakes, Homecoming’s $2.8 million opening day is on par with Deadpool ($2.944 million) and not too far behind fellow MCU film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($3.8 million) and DC’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice ($3.3 million).
The Avengers, released in 2012, holds the best first day for any superhero film at the Australian box office with $6,003,882.

For context, Deadpool ended up with $15m OW (roughly equivalent to a $150m US OW) and BvS $13m.

School holidays would have helped Spidey but still a good OD.

From this, i'd say it looks like a $120-$130m US OW.

Not too far behind? lol. A whole million behind when the numbers are in the low single digits is a huge way behind.

So far so good. With an estimated $15.4 million from previews there is no way it's going sub $100M and it looks like an opening north of $130M is very likely.

This movie definitely had hype considering a sequel was announced a day after the first trailer came out. It might not have been as loud as other MCU films, but the curiosity factor, good reviews and the Marvel Brand is what's helping it the most.

This had plenty of hype - I'd say second only to Wonder Wonen this summer. And it's doing very well.

Yep, though this has been pretty evident for months. Can't say I'm heartbroken about it.
