Wonder Woman

Well, that was bad. After all the reviews and buildup, what I just saw was a continuation of the crud that BvS was. The script is fucking terrible. Gal Gadot cannot act to save her life. Chris Pine is ok (the film improves once he arrives) but the shoehorned in comedy sticks out like a sore thumb. It takes an age for Wonder Woman to actually become Wonder Woman. The film procrastinates and feeds us, among other crap: clothes shopping in London with Lucy Davis as the token Brit. The finale (which disappointingly reminded me of BvS) and "no man's land" section is the only time we see Wonder Woman as we know her to be, and it's all at night time - the action in those parts is ok at best, but has little flow as the film doesn't know when to
and when not to use slo-mo or how often to use it. The action editing is really bad. None of the fighting looks realistic because of multiple cuts. The whole story/mythology is also just kind of crap and awkward. She's Amazonian but she speaks English and they follow Greek gods? Hmm, ok. The blend of WW1 and Wonder Woman's mythology doesn't work. And none of the comedy works because it is too blatant, and just flat out not funny. The bit on the boat about sleeping with women; cringe worthy. Only morons will laugh at it. I guess the best thing about the film is, uh, Chris Pine. But he shouldn't have been in this story at all. This Wonder Woman origin story is just lame. It is not clever at all. Jenkins pretty much just has one theme in the movie, and it's that women don't need men (oh actually yes they do, but just for procreation; lame). So, now we know that Wonder Woman is the Thor of the DC universe, all I have to look forward to is another solo Superman film or a reboot of the DCU.

Critics are definitely raving over this film for two reasons;

1. If they don't, they are chauvinists, and this scares them.
2. Expectations were so low due to BvS that they were pleasantly surprised when DC fed them a Marvel copy.

Wonder Woman reminded of the game Horizon: Zero Dawn from earlier this year. There's not much originality, its more a culmination of everything that has worked in the genre. And like Horizon, it is a gloriois result. Wonder Woman not only tops Man of Steel as the best DCU movie (and I like MoS alot), but can stand tall with the elite 4 of the Marvelverse as well.

I was so hyped during when she charged the front lines. One of the greatest action sequnces ever made, and it continues on into the village. And just when I started to get exhausted, they drop the theme music at the PERFECT time and got me extra excited all over again. This scene alone probably would have earned the movie an A.

The rest works so well too, and thats what will likely keep it as my #1 film of the year. It is so funny, but the jokes never undercut the moments that need to be serious. Pine's death and Gal's resulting reaction are heartbreaking, even if you can see the moment coming a mile away. The score, whie a little too Thorish at first, comes into its own and ends up being wonderful. I'm gonna listen to it when I work out and get pumped up. I also really liked the rag tag Team Wonder Woman. At first you expect them to just be funny canon fodder, but they all get atleast a moment to sell their characters. And the only one who dies is the one who needs to in order to progress the story.

So yeah, this movie is a gem. There's a few things that keep it from an A+, like Ares, but that could change on further viewings. As for now its get the highest, non-perfect, rating possible.

The DCU is a mess. You only get one time to have the first Batman/Superman film. You only get one time to have the first Wonder Woman film. They have fucked up both. Sure, they made money, blah blah blah, but that is only short-term. The DC legacy will be ruined. I just find it astonishing how they have produced such crap for these huge and well-known characters.

Did you check out on the movie before they got to Belgium? I honestly thought you would like since you're one of the few that acknowledges the greatnes of Man of Steel.

Just a quick heads up before you buy the score - the score was composed by Rupert Gregson Williams. The WW theme as we all know is by Zimmer/Junkie XL, but everything else is Williams. That saying, I'm still buying the album because it's a good score and he did a very good job adapting the theme.

Yes, of course. I saw the entire movie. The beginning of the film is shit. Women on this island and we're supposed to believe they are all bad asses with their bows and arrows. lol. Then the forced humour comes when Pine shows up (his flashback scene was cool), then London and women being oppressed (tonally this film is weird), then they go to Veld.

The film's main problem is Gadot. They should have gone with an unknown that can act.

Gotcha. I didn't love the beginning either, but I thought the scene in London was good. i'm a fan of fish out of water comedy, which is also why I'm so fond of the first Thor. This is like Thor but with much better action scenes.

And the feminist seemed pretty minimal to me. If Professor Lupin had said something like "Youre going to fight for a world that does not value women?" then I'd be annoyed. But they do a job of saying the darkness is in everyone, not just men. And the " there's a woman in our meeting" scenes were all pretty funny.

And while Portman and Hemsworth are good together, this has a much better romance.

Yeah, I actually thought it was nicely handled. The film could've been much more overt about sexism, and would've gotten away with it, but it's almost subtle (she does conquer "No Man's Land" after all).

The Amazons are warrior women from Greek myth. Hercules had to steal the belt of Hippolyta as one of the twelve labors.

Gal Godot and Chris Pine are absolutely sensational in this movie. Godot is just a commanding screen presence, she's charismatic, funny and instantly lovable as Diana and completely sells the emotional arc that her character has in this film. Pine has never been more charming opposite her as Steve. The two of them have such a lovely chemistry and I adored their characters and their relationship. It's one of the best pairings I've seen in a superhero movie hands down - and a big reason why I caught myself getting very emotional at the end. Pine perfectly plays that final scene as well as the goodbye to Diana. I definitely cried. It's a shame he won't be back for future installments.

The movie as a whole is easily the strongest DC movie since the Nolan Batman trilogy (though that's not hard) and it's mostly very well-done. It's very well-directed by Patty Jenkins who brings this universe some much needed light, I thought she did an excellent job. The second act is unquestionably the best part of the movie. The No Man's Land sequence is awesome, suspenseful, well-shot, exciting, and will be hard to beat for best action sequence of the year. All the stuff with Diana getting used to 'everyday life' is hilarious.

I didn't think the villains worked at all. The whole plot with the poison was stupid and needlessly confusing and the big reveal with David Thewlis is when the movie started going off the rails for me a bit. The final fight really isn't very good and reeks of Zack Snyder's influence. It's a shame that the Diana/Steve goodbye occurred during that bit. It's sloppy looking and silly and feels completely out of place with everything we've seen before that point.

The very end was great and the final shot worked beautifully.

Overall, I would say despite some issues I really enjoyed this, largely because of how wonderful Diana and Steve were and the performances from Godot and Pine. They really elevate this to another level. B+/A-

Wonder Woman's clear bullseye of success makes the mediocre, dour DC films of late even more apparent. This is grand, glorious entertainment, an effective superhero origin story that finally allows DC to show what most of the best Marvel films do: action with heart and humor in spades. Gal Gadot rises to the occasion in spectacular fashion. She's completely believable, sympathetic and kicks serious butt. She also shares great chemistry with Chris Pine, who (going along with the film's general success in pushing past its genre limitations) is terrific. It's hard to believe this is only Patty Jenkins' second movie since 2003. This is an important movie for the impact that a female superhero film directed by a woman will have in Hollywood. And they did justice to it. A-

Also, Gal played everything with seeing the victims of war so well. I wouldn't categorize this as a comedy but she'd be deserving of a Golden Globe nomination or something.

Also, if she has you on ignore, how did she know that your review was tired shit. The only one quoting you is zwackerm, and he only posts one line of your review and the grade, which although negative, is explained why it's given in much more detail in the whole review, which is much more exhaustive than the one she posted, which is not really a review except for seven words.

You're right. It reeks of narcissistic self-importance.
