Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week 2017
The last time GW ended on a Friday, the weekend right after was actually very decent. The huge drops didn't occur until the following weekend (May 13 - 14). http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan ... =18&p=.htmhttp://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan ... =19&p=.htm

Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week 2017
True. Just have to be careful using comparisons from 10+ years ago since a lot has changed at the Japanese box office since then. I don't expect 50/60% drops, currently thinking drops will averaging around 20/25%, with the younger skewing films performing more favorably. Saturday is looking quite good up past noon today, so let's hope for a strong weekend.

Alien Shiriri (Toho) WK4 07 (---) ¥130,000,000 ($1.1 million), 0, ¥325,000,000 ($2.8 million), The Last Cop: The Movie (Shochiku) NEW 08 (05) ¥102,000,000 ($905,000), -46%, ¥800,000,000 ($7.1 million), Blade of the Immortal (Warner Bros.) Saturday was off to an excellent start, and afternoon ticket sales also look strong. So far, numbers are indicating a very good weekend, though it'll come down to how Sunday performs, since it has a good chance of being down a lot compared to last week. If Sunday delivers, however, I'll be underestimating a lot of films this weekend.
Beauty and the Beast will be aiming for a potential third-consecutive weekend above the ¥1 billion mark, and not too many films have been able to achieve that in the past. It'll also be very close to, or slightly above, ¥7 billion in total after three weeks in release, and even if it would experience harsh declines post-Golden Week (a decline yes, but a harsh decline is unlikely) it's pretty much locked up a ¥10 billion ($90 million+) total.
Disney's latest live-action re-imagining is performing very similarly to Alice in Wonderland (release dates, opening weekends, Golden Week results, 3 weekends above ¥1 billion (maybe), etc.), and like it, should remain atop the box office into June. If it continues to follow a similar trajectory at the box office, it'll be aiming for a ¥12 billion (~$105 million) finish, and if it finishes above Alice's ¥11.8 billion total, it'll become Disney's highest-grossing live-action film of all-time.
Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter will climb back to second place in its fourth weekend, and exceed the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion in the process. Detective Conan films fall quickly after Golden Week, but the 21st entry in the long-running franchise is targeting a total over ¥6.5 billion (~$60 million), setting another record for the franchise - for the fifth consecutive year. There's a very good chance it'll be 2017's highest-grossing animated film.
The Fate of the Furious will have one of the biggest drops over the weekend, but thanks to healthy Golden Week dailies, is well on track to at least match the gross of Furious 7, and has a fair enough chance of even outgrossing it, too. Look for it to finish around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+).

Thanks for the weekend forecast. Crossing my fingers that Beauty and the Beast increases with actuals and has a 3rd weekend over 1 billion yen.

That's correct, pookpooi. Too bad it missed a third ¥1 billion weekend, but it's an excellent third weekend nonetheless.
Weekend Actuals will be posted in an hour or so.
I'll also post Your Name.'s updated numbers, too, R136a1.

Alien Shiriri (Toho) WK4 07 (---) ¥96,000,000 ($847,000), 0, ¥279,000,000 ($2.5 million), The Last Cop: The Movie (Shochiku) NEW 08 (05) ¥95,125,900 ($839,000), -50%, ¥630,186,100 ($5.6 million), Blade of the Immortal (Warner Bros.) >Beauty and the Beast easily retains its position atop the box office, delivering the 8th biggest third weekend of all-time and the 4th biggest three week total of all-time with the major boost it received from Golden Week this past week. After three weeks in release, the film has sold 4,731,206 admissions.
Disney's latest live-action re-imagining will continue to dominate the box office for awhile, perhaps for the remainder of the month, and is well on its way to exceeding the ¥10 billion ($90 million) milestone. As long as it's able to withstand the post-Golden Week decline over the next couple weeks, I expect a total around ¥11/12 billion ($100/105 million) and 8 million admissions.
>Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter climbs back to second place in its fourth weekend of release, and exceeded the ¥5 billion milestone over the weekend. Detective Conan films fall quickly after Golden Week, but the 21st entry in the long-running franchise is targeting a total around ¥6.5 billion (~$60 million), setting another record for the franchise - for the fifth consecutive year. There's a very good chance it'll be 2017's highest-grossing animated film.
>The Fate of the Furious had one of the biggest drops over the weekend, though it's noticeably stronger than any of its predecessors, and thanks to healthy Golden Week dailies, is well on track to at least match the gross of Furious 7. There's still a fair enough chance of even outgrossing it, too, and look for a finish around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+).
>Memory, from director Yasuo Furuhata and starring Junichi Okada and Shun Oguri, debuted in fourth place over the weekend frame, selling a decent 180,246 admissions across 296 screens. The debut is nothing to get too excited about, but it is enough to guarantee yet another ¥1 billion ($10 million) earner for distributor Toho, and 2017.
>Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry, the second film based on the Fairy Tail anime/manga, managed to earn itself a debut in the Top 10, selling 42,771 admissions on 101 screens. A debut in the Top 10 was looking doubtful, and with a barely wide theater count, its chances were pretty slim, yet fans and distributor should be satisfied.
>Moana fell out of the Top 10 in its ninth weekend of release, but with the boost it received from Golden Week, it has exceeded the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone.
>Your Name. is still in release, and although it's not earning much these days, it's still making enough to be tracked. After 37 weeks in release now, Makoto Shinkai's uber-blockbuster has grossed ¥24,942,120,000 ($235.8 million) and has sold 19,215,629 admissions.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
Thank you for the update, Corpse. Looks like Your Name will have to wait until June to hit 25 billion yen. Beauty and the Beast will surpass Fantastic Beasts to become highest-grossing film of the year this weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
Yeah, the road to ¥25 billion is going to be a very slow crawl now (May and June are very weak months). I'll continue to update its numbers each week or two for as long as they're available.

Corpse, is the next big potential blockbuster Pirates 5 on July 1? Could Beauty and the Beast be #1 until then?

Yeah, Pirates will very likely do over ¥5 billion (the blockbuster milestone). I don't think Beauty and the Beast will be #1 all the way until July, though. It will probably be #1 through the remainder of May, and while June is a weak month, it does have a few films that'll likely debut at #1.

Aside from a few holdovers the drops this weekend were good. Next weekend will be brutal though I believe where all movies will see a post-Golden week drops.

Dang it!! It must be performing below those bloated expectations in its late-late legs after dropping from Top 10 I believe

In the US, announcing a Blu-ray date usually kills a movie's late legs. But Your Name is already making such minuscule numbers it shouldn't really have an effect.

The home video release date will certainly stun it even more, but I still don't think Toho will let it miss the ¥25 billion mark. They have until July, and it "only" needs a bit over 40,000 admissions to get it there (which will bring it to 19,255,000 total admissions).
