The decline is due to the post-Spring Break decline, expected, and being down to a single showing at the vast majority of its locations. Its home video release is slated for October, 14 months after opening, so Toho still has 6 months to keep it playing theatrically. Do you see it staying in theaters for 6 more months? I imagine Toho is only interested in getting it past 25 billion yen.

The home release date is released? I thought the October is the date of UK release. That's more than one full year, even longer than Spirited Away. Anyway, does your subscription tell the sub of top 20 rank? Is it true that right now we have no idea if Your Name rank 21 or 30 or 50?

Ha. Surely it will bomb. Never known of a Chinese film doing well in Japan. When is it coming out?

Yes, even their highest grossing film The Mermaid hardly managed to get only 10-20 screens in Japan, but over here we got Matt Damon factor which can possibly give it a respectable opening?

Not sure how much Matt Damon will help it out. Elysium made $7.6m. Green Zone made $7.9m. Sure, The Martian made $27m in Japan, but The Great Wall doesn't strike me as that type of film. Seems more like the first two.

I know that it missed the Top 20, but since it hasn't lost any theaters (it's actually up 2 as of last week), and based on its weekly gross, I doubt it came in lower than 25.

Most Chinese films don't perform well in Japan, but the country isn't without its hits/blockbusters in the market either. Both Red Cliff films, for example, exceeded the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion, with Part 1 grossing ¥5.05 billion ($53 million) and Part II coming in at ¥5.55 billion ($58 million). In USD, the two films performed better in Japan than in China. Part 1 actually occupied the #1 spot at the box office for 5-consecutive weeks. Part II debuted at #1, but that was its only week atop the box office because it opened the week before that year's Detective Conan release. ¥5 billion is roughly the equivalent of a $250 million grosser in the U.S., in terms of the number of films that achieve said figures. Of course, since then, there's been the disputes between China and Japan concerning the Senkaku Islands, which has strained the relationship between the two countries.

I had a question about the various rankings I've seen for it. For the Japanese box office, it ranks #4 all-time or #2 Japanese movies only. Also with the worldwide results, it's the #1 anime movie. But how does it rank in the worldwide results for Japanese movies generally, not just for anime? Your Name. is the highest-grossing Japanese film at the worldwide box office by a wide margin, surpassing Spirited Away's reported $275 million worldwide gross. It has grossed around $363 million worldwide after its first few days of release in the U.S. this past week. International Grosses (now finally including the US): Japan - $235.3 million (still in wide release in its 33rd week) China - $83.8 million South Korea - $26.6 million Taiwan - $6.3 million Hong Kong - $4.1 million United States - $1.8 million (after 4 days in release) France - $1.4 million Thailand - $1.2 million Australia - $0.9 million Italy - $0.6 million United Kingdom - $0.5 million New Zealand - $0.1 million Total: ~$362.6 millionIt also broke a lot of records for a Japanese film in smaller Asian countries, but I have no numbers for those markets so the worldwide total is definitely above its known total. Many South American countries also got the film, but I have no figures from there either.

I feel whenever anybody from the west talks about China they basically want to follow it with "those commie bastards". Whereas the Japanese. Oh, the Japanese. So wonderful and pure! People forget WWII.

Ah, everything I read said "#1 anime" so I was wondering if there was some non-anime movie that had been big elsewhere. I went again last night and expect to go again Thursday before it leaves, to help add to Shinkai's numbers!

Which is correct? Even for Your name, they are going by the current exchange rate without looking for each week, also, they didn't recorded its collection in Taiwan, Honk kong and some of the other asian markets.

I still don't know if highest-grossing of country x film at the worldwide box office hold any merit. Because in my country produce many martial art films that do well in western countries but bomb in my own country. So being highest grossing film at worldwide level means nothing in my case. Highest grossing anime film sounds a little bit better though. But in my mind anime has potential to compete financially with 3d animation technique that used heavily in western studios, so it's not necessary to separate to its own category.

That's why I said "reported" $275 million gross, since that's the number you'll see everywhere despite it definitely being at least $20 million short.

I won't have time to post a Weekend Forecast tonight, however, I'll be posting hourly updates for the latest Detective Conan film (in comparison with last year's three ¥1 billion+ debuts) because it's going to have a mammoth opening weekend, easily the biggest of the year so far (possibly overall by the end of the year) and possibly over ¥1 billion.
It has sold nearly 30% of its available tickets for the day in advance.

December 2015 saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Yo-Kai Watch 2 open above ¥1 billion on the same weekend, but I can't recall any two films opening above the mark on two-consecutive weekends... I'm pretty sure it's happened at least one or twice, but I'll do some research over the weekend to see.
First update will be posted soon.

Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Set For Monster Debut
As you can see, the latest Detective Conan film, the 21st in the franchise, is currently outpacing last year's film's franchise record opening by an incredible 29%. It's also comfortably ahead of The Force Awakens at the same-point-in-time.
We could be looking at a potential opening over 1 million admissions, which hasn't happened since 2014.

Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Set For Monster Debut
I'll have all the hourly updates posted very soon, but Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter is well on course for over 1 million admissions, and one of the Top 3 biggest opening weekends for a domestic film of all-time - and biggest overall opening weekend since 2014.

Re: Japan Box Office: Detective Conan Set For Monster Debut
Absolutely huge for the latest Detective Conan film, quite easily beating all the other uber-tier openings of the past 3 years above.
No film has opened above 1 million admissions since 2014, but Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter is looking at possibly 1.1 million admissions and a gross over ¥1.4 billion (~$13 million) this weekend, which might beat Howl's Moving Castle to deliver the second biggest opening weekend for a domestic film of all-time.
