Your Name. (Japanese: 君の名は。 Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa.)
Quote: Your Name. (Japanese: 君の名は。 Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa.?) is a 2016 Japanese anime film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Based on his novel of the same name published a month before the film's premiere, Your Name tells the story of a high school girl in rural Japan and a high school boy in Tokyo who swap bodies.
Your Name was animated by CoMix Wave Films, and distributed by Toho. It premiered at the Anime Expo 2016 convention in Los Angeles, California on July 3, 2016, and in Japan on August 26, 2016. It received critical acclaim for its animation and emotional impact, and was also a major commercial success, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the 8th-highest grossing traditionally animated film and the highest-grossing anime film worldwide, with a total gross of more than US$328 million.

Your Name. had me at romance science-fiction.
The reveals are breathtakingly unexpected.
The anime art is eyedazzlingly beautiful.
The story rings heartbreakingly true.
Your Name. transported me through the elusive threshold of our shared dreams. *A+*

Re: Your Name. (Japanese: 君の名は。 Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa.)
A few notes: - I highly recommend reading nothing about the movie before seeing it - it's very much an experiential movie with purposefully disorienting non-linear story building. My review above omits plot details both to preserve the experience for others and also to prevent myself from concretizing the story until I have had the opportunity to see it again.
- Your Name. is in no way a musical, but the soundtrack is awesome with the songs clearly building on the narrative.
- I almost always choose subtitles over dubbed versions and I did so with Your Name., but the choice isn't as clear cut as with most foreign films. First, all animated movies are dubbed, even in their original language. The subtitles in Your Name. are especially challenging to read, sometimes coming simultaneously at the very top and very bottom of the screen to represent overlapping dialogue and printed material onscreen such as cellphone texts and signage. Inevitably you'll miss reading some of the text. In a way this adds to the pleasure of disorientation I mentioned above, but it was also a bit frustrating as it kept drawing my eyes away from the spectacularly detailed artwork. I also prefer to hear the original musical soundtrack of foreign films, though now I hear that the Radwimps themselves perform the songs in English on the dubbed version. I'm seeing the subtitled version again this coming week with my anime posse, but I'll definitely be making the time to see the dubbed version in first run too.

This was the best animated movie of last year. Smart, charming and at times heart-breaking.

I have now seen the dubbed version, and I found the dubbing to be average at best. At times it sounded a bit like I was listening to a books-on-tape reading of the script. It's not terrible by any stretch, but my recommendation now firmly goes to the subtitled version for all but the most intractable subtitle haters.

Yeah I always prefer my anime subtitled. The dubbed versions try hard but mostly fail to get the essence of Japanese sentences.

As a regular moviegoer, I enjoyed this insightful quote from the New York Times review of Your Name.: Quote: In a sense this kind of swap... evokes the transporting process of the fictional experience as we — viewers, readers and gamers — temporarily inhabit another being’s consciousness.

Subs > dubs always. English actors always sound weird trying to replicate Japanese tone.
This movie is really fantastic though. Checks off all the boxes of a good fantasy and a good romance. And the music is so so good. It was my #2 for Best Score and I gave it three Best Song nominations. And even with its fantastical elements, the movie is very grounded ala the treasured Miyazaki gold era, rather than the over-the-top anime style seen so often.
Also, if you haven’t seen it, try to stay away from complete plot summaries.
