Post Re: Japan Box Office: Spring Break Battle Royale Weekend
Thanks for the early update again, Passenger did underperformed in several markets and a $6 M closure wont be bad at all.
Now Japan is the third biggest foreign market for both La La Land and Moana, it has always been one of the top contributor to H'wood biggies.
One more thing, I really don't get the appeal of kamen rider, looks like ultra low budget power rangers to me

The Kamen Rider movies must be really cheap to produce for them to continue to release 3 a year despite low box office returns.

Well, Power Rangers was inspired by Super Sentai, which was influenced by Kamen Rider, which started the genre. So Kamen Rider resembling Power Rangers (or rather, vice-versa) is to be expected.

The Kamen Rider films aren't costly, I believe their budgets are around ¥400 million (~$4 million), and each theatrical release is able to at least double that figure. I highly doubt the films ever end up matching or grossing less than their budgets. And besides, they have the various yearly TV series', home video sales, video games, and other merchandise revenue that'll keep the franchise going for... well, probably forever. :P

Your Name. earned ~¥17 million ($154,000) in its 31st weekend. I'll have its cumulative total and admissions posted with the Weekend Actuals update coming up in an hour or two.

>Sing holds onto its #1 ranking, dropping under 20% in its second weekend frame, to fend off a wide variety of newcomers. After 10 days in release now, the animated musical competition has sold a nice 1,513,520 admissions. Illumination managed to achieve another home run here, and a total over ¥4 billion (~$35 million+) is looking likely.

>Kong: Skull Island enjoys a good second place debut, selling 256,885 admissions across 676 screens over the weekend frame. Its debut is 27% higher than the 2005 King Kong. It remains to be seen if the new Kong will manage the impressive legs of the 2005 film, since New Year is stronger than Spring Break, but a total between ¥2-2.5 billion (~$20-25 million) seems likely.

>Moana enjoyed a strong third weekend hold, but despite how good that sub-20% figure looks, it's still not comparable to its studio predecessors, Frozen, Big Hero 6, or Zootopia. After 16 days in release, Disney's latest acclaimed animated hit has sold 2,160,369 admissions. I think it's probably safe to say that it's unlikely to recover enough to match the legs of those films, but it's still aiming for the ¥5 billion (~$45 million) blockbuster milestone, which is certainly nothing to be disappointed about.

>Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic continues to hold very well in the face of numerous new releases, and if it has a strong final week of Spring Break, is still on target for a ¥4 billion (~$35 milllion) total. After 23 days in release, the 37th entry in the long-running franchise has sold 2,288,809 admissions. If it reaches ¥4 billion, it'll become only the second film in the franchise to accomplish the feat (after last year's film).

>Daytime Shooting Star managed to make the Top 5 in a very, very close battle with two of the other weekend debuts. Directed by Takehiko Shinjo, and starring Mei Nagano, Shohei Miura, and Aran Shirahama, the live-action adaptation of the shojo manga sold 145,676 admissions across 273 screens over the weekend frame. And since opening on Friday, brings its 3-day admissions to 218,251. Legs are typically solid for shojo films release in the Spring, so I expect a total comfortably above ¥1 billion (~$10 million).

>Kamen Rider X Super Sentai: Ultra Superhero War, the 55th theatrical release in the Kamen Rider series, debuts in sixth place and within expectations. The latest film, the first of the tri-annual release strategy, sold 144,347 admissions over the weekend across 309 screens. Its debut is solid, and fairly standard for the cross over series, but the frontloaded nature of the series will prevent it from reaching ¥1 billion (~$10 million), so look for a total around ¥800 million ($7 million+).

>Policeman and Me only comes in seventh place over the weekend, but distributor Shochiku is likely satisfied with its decent opening. Also based on a shojo manga, the live-action adaptation sold 141,017 admissions over the weekend on 303 screens. As I mentioned above, legs for shojo films during Spring Break are usually good, so a total of ¥1 billion (~$10 million) is possible.

>Passengers rounds out the openers that made the Top 10, having to settle for a disappointing ninth place ranking. Expectations weren't particularly good, but the sizable screen count and release date are indications that Sony was expecting better. The Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence lead film only sold 92,488 admissions over the weekend frame on 499 screens. And since opening on Friday, brings its 3-day admissions up to 124,397. It'll be prone to early screen/showtime cuts given its under-performance, so legs are probably going to be lackluster, so look for a total of ¥500-600 million ($4-5 million) or so.

>And finally, well out of the Top 10 now, Your Name. is still hanging on fairly well (around 15/16th place). After 31 weeks in release, Makoto Shinkai's phenomenon uber-blockbuster has now grossed ¥24,786,911,900 ($234.6 million) and has sold 19,093,366 admissions.

That would benefit the new Power Rangers movie a little in Japan then, already existing a decent fandom for such genre.
And it's surprising that Sing is performing on par with Moana, did they dubbed the film in Japanese with popular J-pop artists?

Sing is dubbed, actually, with a diverse popular cast of music artists, screen actors, and voice actors contributing to the dub. Pretty much all of the marketing I've seen features the Japanese cast, so it's definitely having a positive effect on its box office returns.

Your Name total 24,835 million yen, it receive 48 million yen last week, decrease from 63 million yen. Just only 165 million yen more to be 25 billion yen, but it seems very long way to go.
Will it stay long enough for golden week, which it needs to break the milestone?
IMHO low chance, but Japanese box office analyst Hal51 said that positive word of mouth from North America release will reflect back to Japan (really?)
But many marketing gimmicks can be done, if they advertise on 'this week is the last week that Your Name will stay on theatre' then many people will come to see it one last time, making it pass 25 billion yen.

How WOM in US will benefit its run in Japan?
And it's getting limited release, probably 200-300 screens, so you can't expect big numbers either.

Your Name did not really benefit from Spring Break...no large bumps like the other animated films. I'm not sure Golden Week would help it that much if it is still in theaters then.

If it does well in the U.S., on whatever its theater count ends up being this weekend, it can generate some interest, but since over 19 million people have seen the movie in Japan now, there really isn't much of an audience left to get to turn out.

It'll remain in theaters until at least Golden Week. It's now down to a single showtime at most locations going into this upcoming weekend, but it hasn't lost a single theater yet. Given its status, it'll still be awhile before it begins to loses theaters. And, given its status again, it's highly likely that Toho will eventually announce when its final week in theaters is, which will give it a noticeable bump. I highly doubt Toho will have it fall short of ¥25 billion, even if it takes until Summer (it should only take until early May).

Golden Week is a lot stronger than Spring Break, which mostly gives a boost at the box office for films that skew toward families and students. Your Name., while appealing to just about every age group, has played weaker in the mornings indicating it never had a significant family/children audience.

Films that skew toward adults and seniors don't benefit from Spring Break, since it's an ordinary week for most, but they do benefit greatly during Golden Week since the workplace have most of the week off.

>Sing holds onto its #1 ranking, enjoying a small weekend increase thanks to Spring Break and Saturday being a discounted ticket day.. After 17 days in release now, the animated musical competition has sold an impressive 2,642,299 admissions. Illumination has proven it's now capable of competing against Disney in the market, and while they're still performing in Disney's shadow on the imported animated film front, they're doing very, very well.

Sing is going to exceed ¥4 billion ($35 million+) fairly easily, and is going to be aiming for a total north of ¥4.5 billion (~$40 million+), making Japan its strongest overseas market.

>Moana received a bump in its fourth weekend, again thanks to Spring Break and the discounted Saturday, and continues to perform very well, even if it's run is underwhelming compared to its studio predecessors. Disney's Polynesian adventure has sold an impressive 3,080,218 admissions after 24 days in release. Also, like Sing, Japan is mere days away from becoming the strongest overseas market for the film.

As mentioned, Moana isn't performing as well as its studio predecessors, but those are some very high numbers to match and shouldn't takeaway from its very good run thus far. A total over ¥5 billion (~$45 million), the blockbuster milestone, is still very likely.

>Kong: Skull Island falls to third place, but posted a reasonable sophomore weekend, one that's actually on par with 2005's King Kong's opening weekend. Kong has sold 783,468 admissions after 9 days in release. It's probably going to fall behind the 2005 film pretty soon (since that one had the benefit of New Year), but a total over ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is very likely, and that's perfectly fine.

>Doraemon: Great Adventure in the Antarctic surprisingly didn't receive a weekend increase in its fifth weekend, but it made up for that with a strong weekday showing beforehand. The 37th entry in the long-running series has now sold 3,116,903 admissions after 30 days in release.

Doraemon films often plummet after Spring Break, so this one will likely continue the trend, but its running total is so impressive at this stage, that a total over ¥4 billion (~$35 million) is locked up, which will make it only the second film in the franchise to reach the mark, after last year's while - and, it might even surpass last year's film to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

>La La Land rose two positions in its sixth weekend following a strong sixth weekend hold. It became the third highest-grossing live-action musical of all-time last week by surpassing Chicago, and now it's looking possible that it could challenge The Phantom of the Opera (¥4.2 billion) to become the second-highest grossing live-action musical; only Les Miserables (¥5.86 billion) will have grossed more, but it's definitely out of reach.

And once again, like Moana and Sing, Japan will become La La Land's strongest overseas market.

>And finally, now in its 32nd week of release, Makoto Shinkai's Your Name. only saw a 6% decline, coming in 18th place over the weekend. It actually picked up 2 additional theaters this past weekend, having yet to lose a single one since opening 8 months ago. After 32 weeks in release, the phenomenon uber-blockbuster has now grossed ¥24,838,831,400 ($235.1 million) and has sold 19,136,297 admissions.
