 Olive Oil
Is all olive oil good to cook with or are there some olive oils that are purely for salads?
Going around the supermarket, I see some in big plastic containers (like all the other cooking oils) and I know those are for cooking with, but then I see some in glass bottles, all fancy-looking, and I just wonder are those also for cooking with or just for cold use?

 Re: Olive Oil
I used to wonder as well how using fancier cooking oil could make a difference, since I associated olive oil most with cooking oil. But it looks like while using the expensive olive oil as cooking oil is indeed pointless and a waste of money, there is other ways people use cold olive oil beyond just salad dressing, such as putting it on cooked food or using it to make sauces or dip bread in etc. Olive oil is really healthy so that gives some people a reason to put it on everything, and no doubt some of those more expensive bottles justify it by claiming to be the most healthy of all/the most organic and unprocessed

 Re: Olive Oil
Here's a tip to anyone cooking with olive oil; if it's low-heat cooking, then use olive oil. If it's high-heat, use canola oil. High-heat cooking burns away all of the goodness from olive oil because it has a low smoke point.

 Re: Olive Oil
I think you can use most olive oils, even in high heat outside of extra virgin oil. but that is really 430+f. Outside of that, once I started using olive oil, I almost never looked back.

 Re: Olive Oil
I've used it before. It really is the best. But my wife buys these HUGE containers of other oil, and it takes us months to get through it, and by the time I get the chance to buy some olive oil, she's already stealthily ordered more of the shit peanut oil or corn oil or whatever it is. Thegun reminds me of Michelle Pfieffer's character in The Family.

 Re: Olive Oil
There's gotta be a better reference than that. Never saw it, is it because I like to cook? I do, it's very therapeutic. And cheap.

 Re: Olive Oil
Not because of that. It's because she plays a gangster's wife and she talks about olive oil.

 Re: Olive Oil
Here's another question: Does olive oil "go off" or does it just have a "best before"?

 Re: Olive Oil
The olive oil I use has a best before date, but I never make it that far. The one I just got will be good for over a year and a half, and it'll run out long before that because any sort of baking happens in olive oil, I feel like everything just comes out better that way.

 Re: Olive Oil
There is an Olive Oil and Vinegar store near me. They have dozens of different flavors of oil. And I can refill my bottle for a much cheaper price than buying it at the grocery store. IT'S INCREDIBLE.

 Re: Olive Oil
Olive oil is superior to other oils but more so raw or for lower heat cooking and shallow frying. Vegetable oil is better for deep frying and frying at high temperatures. Olive oil leaves a heavy taste when deep frying and isn't good for you if overheated. Offcourse, uncooked (ie. on salads) it's actually good for you.

 Re: Olive Oil
Believe it or not my family used to deep fry in olive oil when i was a kid. Sounds like we used $100 dollar bills for toilet paper but I assure you that wasn't the case lol

 Re: Olive Oil
I did deep fry in olive oil a couple of times when I was too lazy to go buy cheap frying oil. The truth is that olive oil is kind of easy to come by here. Nearly everyone who's from the coast or has family there has a little olive grove which gets them enough olive oil for the whole year and some to give away (it usually ends up as traditional product exchange as you give one "valuable" thing for the other so everybody ends up happy).
I rarely use any other type of oil. Only for deep frying basically. And that's only once in every 2-3 months. I rarely fry things though I did fry some bread crumbs last night as a coating for plum dumplings. I use olive oil for salads, cakes (lately I've been loving the lavender, greek yogurt and olive oil cake), sauces, sourdough bread, etc.
