I really loved this as well. This is actually pretty easily the best X-Men movie. There are so few films that end perfectly that it's always worth noting when it happens, and this is one of those rare films.

Tears were streaming when she pulled out the cross and tilted it to make an X. Never thought a comic book movie would make me cry like that.

I'm still letting it sit for a while, but like others here, I think it may well eclipse X2 as my favorite of all the X-Men films. James Mangold's stripped-down, western style aesthetic makes the film feel distinctly different and darker than its predecessors, and it's incredibly refreshing to have genuinely dangerous stakes at play in a genre so preoccupied with maintaining the status quo. Hugh Jackman is tremendous in his last turn with his starmaking role; it's by far the meatiest material he's had to work with in 17 years of playing the character, and he nails all the desperation, gravitas, and hard-earned pathos afforded to him in the script.

A-

Stray observations:

1.) I never knew just how much I needed to hear Patrick Stewart drop f-bombs like they were going out of style.

2.) I'm really glad that Deadpool opened the door for an R-rated Logan. Even though the story still would have been left intact, it wouldn't have felt as edgy or brutal without the gore on display here. Seriously, every gory discretion shot from the previous X-Men films is made up for and then some.

3.) I know that Tom Rothman isn't in the picture anymore, but it's hard to believe that the Wolverine solo flicks went from the bungled 2009 film to this.

Post Re: Logan
After two days I can finally put some thoughts down.
Before Logan I didn't think I would love an X-Men film let alone a comic book film more than DoFP and before that I didn't think X2 would be beaten. Needless to say, this movie is a showcase in why the X-Men franchise is my favorite of all the comic book franchises. Hell, I even loved Apocalypse. I cried while watching. I knew I would. I'm only 25 and for the last 17 years of my life Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart have been in it as their amazing portrayals of classic characters.
Logan felt like a film first rather than a comic book film. It's the most personal story of any of them and has so much heart in it. The western feel, the graphic violence, the bleak story. They all made sense and felt natural. The performances out of Jackman, Stewart and Keen were easily the best of the franchise.

Some notes
Oscar noms await makeup, sound design and sound editing. And I hope Stewart as well. He was phenomenal.
Thank goodness this was rated R. It would've been great still but the violence was a great feature of such a depressing world.
Killing the family was brutal.
Merchant was great.
Glad there wasn't any cameos in it. It would've taken away from the trio.
The ONLY thing I wasn't too keen on was how many times Logan woke up from a nap in 10 minutes of screen time.
There's a lot more things I will have more when I see it again.
I'm going to miss these guys so much.

My rating is: A+

List!

1. Logan
2. Days of Future Past
3. X2
4. Deadpool
5. Apocalypse
6. First Class
7. X-Men
8. The Wolverine
9. The Last Stand
10. Origins

I enjoyed it give it an A-. I still don't think it is the best X-Men movie as both X2 and Days of Future Past I liked better. I guess the film was too depressing for me, especially as we are living in depressing times would rather have more hope.

Without a doubt Logan is the best of the Wolverine films and one of the best superhero adapted films. It feels that Wolverine, much like Deadpool, was made for the R-rating and it was splendid to enjoy that in this dramatic final Jackman Wolverine charactization of epic length. Every fight scene is pretty much riveting and I relished the anticipation of every next action scene. The Wolverine daughter is also excellently put the life by the actress playing here. Silent in voice for the most part, her actions double down on speaking louder than words. The film has plenty of highlights going for it, the Wolverine double is one of the good introductions as well. He however didn't feel like a true nemesis because of limited screen time, while neither the other villains were that much of a threat. The real villain was his suffering of his cancer like decease and the film and Jackman himself handled this part perfectly. My main criticism on the film comes from the non-action parts where I found my engagement sometimes falling a bit flat. I felt they were trying to introduce too many things around the character that influenced the story. It made me not really bond or feel compelled with story development. It's excellent action set pieces though make it one of the early winners of the year.

I thought turning over the cross was one of the particularly nice little touches the film applied relating to the xmen universe.

And while I hope to see Laura return, I'm not too interested in a new kiddie x-men flick, although seeing them use their powers with an R-rating would be tempting.

I didn't like how the film ended with them walking to the border/ Canada. It seem inconceivable there actually is an "Eden", so what are they actually supposed to be free from there. Alkali is not powerful enough to fight them cross border (although Mexico seemed fine)? In relation to this I also didn't understood how the "iron hand" guy said at the end, -we have to get them before they get to the border-.
I couldn't imagine what would be waiting there for them they wouldn't be able to handle.

Well, as it turns out, all the bad guys died, so these kids could effectively just stay in the US and have no repercussions. But crossing the border would allow them to live without fear of being nabbed again ... Canada welcomes mutants. And I think "Eden" as it was in the comic is just a myth. Eden actually just represented freedom (or Canada/"getting to the border"). But we'll never know for sure.

The corporation pursuing them still exists. Logan says they will keep coming and coming, too. So they still needed to cross into Canada (where it is obviously implied they will be given a type of refugee sanctuary; there is a scene where a female voice confirms as much over the radio).

Right, ok. So will Canada really provide sanctuary? or will it just give them more of a head start because of different law enforcement, terrain etc.? I cannot see how crossing to Canada will help all that much. Maybe going to Europe, but isn't Canada very cooperative with the US?

"Eden" is, I admit, a bit confusing. I dig the idea of it just being an imaginary figment from the comic, but one which becomes real, in a sense, when those coordinates are chosen for the rendezvous point. And this seems to be the film's idea, right? But it is odd it is such a well-equipped place, with the pulley system they use to lift the wounded Logan, a very nice set of big-eye binoculars, a cabin, etc.

Much has changed in post-Trump 2029. ;)

My impression is: the film wants us to roll with the idea Canada has agreed to give the mutants (essentially escapees from a type of internment camp) refugee status and, by extension, not give them to any other authorities.

Yes. And that works for me. I never even questioned it until I saw it yesterday and had stuffp picking fault. :P

the place on the coordinates was real, Logan stated that. Eden was the thing that was bull shit. It was just a small rest stop though, not a safe haven as the comics depicted it. He was super pissed they let him sleep and heal a few days as he knew it wasn't safe for them.
