Its a Takashi Mike movie and I couldn't stand it.

But for all the reasons I think you'll lake it.

Mainly that its some mix of David Lynch, horror movies, and Alien. All wrapped into one just for you.

Actually, i've wanted to see Gozu for awhile now. Takashi Mike is an amazing filmmaker, and i've heard Gozu is his most bizarre film yet, which is saying a lot (Ichi The Killer, anyone?). So, yeah, i'd be glad to track this sucka down and let you know what I thought about it.

So do you like Mike for the same reasons you like Lynch? I haven't seen his other ones, but this felt very Lynchian. The person who presented him at class has seen 13 of Mike's movies and is on a quest to see everyone one them. Oddly, he couldn't really say much except for that the films were "awesome" which doesn't really cut it in my book. I'd like to hear what a more articulate response as to why he's amazing. I don't consider him a poor quality director, just definately not my style. I'm trying to figure out what it is about his style and stories people like?

I know a lot of people that do like Mike and Lynch for the same reasons, but I personally enjoy their work for different reasons. To me, Lynch is one of the last true artists working in film today, and that's why I love his work. I love the way he composes a frame. His use of lighting, his choice of shot selection, his use of music... I could just sit back and watch a Lynch film for hours on end and never be bored. It's like a moving painting to me.

For Mike, i'm more impressed by his sheer audacity as a filmmaker than by his artistic sensibilities. His throw caution to the wind brand of shooting a picture really compels me. I don't know if you've ever seen Ichi The Killer, but it's one of the most fearless films i've ever had the pleasure to sit through. I don't want to go into great detail about it here, but if you see it, you'll know exactly what i'm talking about within the first couple of minutes. Mike's films are just continuously bursting at the seams with ideas and colors. It feels as if the pictures printed on the celluloid are trying to burst free of their confines and jump right into your living room. So, yeah, I like Mike's work because of the utter exuberance that comes off the screen. When you watch a Mike film, it's like you can hear him saying "Fuck it, i'm shooting whatever the hell pops into my head first and you have to deal with it". It's enthralling on a level.

Hopefully, i'll be getting this this weekend sometime. Looking forward to it.

l've never seen any of his stuff. Only cuz from what l hear l wouldnt like any of it. Any particularly tame/straightforward recommendations?

oops, imdb spells it with one i cause that's where I got the spelling. I only heard the name orally in class. Thanks for the head's up. Don't worry Kypade, I had my issues with it too. I just somehow knew it was up Makeshift's alley. Honestly I was not all that surprised when he said he had already heard of the director and was a fan.

hm. you're right. l've never heard it spelled with one i, before. But l've never checked imdb, l guess. It's pronounced MEE-KAY, according to his trivia. whatever.

And, actually, l meant of Miike's work. From what l hear, they're all pretty out there, gory, and generally intense.

And really, provocative, extremely violent, sexual taboo-filled, films aren't my cup of tea. Especially when they also include Lynchian ambiguous (read: nonsensical) endings.

So, if he has anything more straight-forward and light, l may give him a chance...otherwise, l just dunno...

Kypade, one of Miike's most straightforward and relatively mainstream films is Chakushin ari, or One Missed Call as it's known as in the states. It's in the same vein as most Asian ghost stories, but it's pretty damn good. Not his best work by any means, but still decent.
