... This is definatly the worst place you can ask this question. Well maybe not the worst but its up there.

But if you really need an answer to your question... Nope.

help like as in ... psyciatric help?

god no.

I know some very cool people, very sociable people even, that spend oodles of time on the internet. It is a form of communication, I wouldn't worry about it unless you have no life outside it. If that is the case the you need to try and find something meaningful you can do outside of the computer.

That could be a job, a hobby, anything really. Spending alot of time on the computer is not a bad thing.

There's an outside life? I'll have to check that out someday.

Exactly, a very good point. It's either 'everyone is a computer nerd', or 'no one is'.

haha, if anything, spending my time on forums helped my social life. It lets me be the conversation starter among my friends, and it gives you more info than the average person....

On that note, did you know that, in order to curb excessive urbanization, the South Korean government ordered that a beltway around Seoul be out-of-reach to construction, so as to create some green space? Seoul, the city, has 10m people and is the 2nd or 3rd largest municipality after Mumbai and/or Karachi, Pakistan (both 10-11m).

What happened is that they just started building beyond that greenbelt, so that now, metro Seoul has 17-20 million people, roughly 40-% of South Korea's population.

The more you know... \:D/

Are you on crack?

So there is no difference between someone who actualyl knows how a comptuer works and someone who spends 24 hours a day online?

Yeah there is the former is a computer nerd, the latter has no life.

Playing Everquest does not a computer nerd make.

For those that know, I work at a large computer corporation. A large one. I am exposed to people who are hardcore nerds, I mean hardcore.

The kids today, they have no concept. Nobody on this board has a concept of how deep it can go.

People who know about computers are just like people who know more about politics. There is no class distiction between those who have that knowledge, and knowing about hard drives, bits, bytes doesn't get you beat up and being in the A/V club is actually kind of popular these days.

So no, there are computer enthusiasts and evangelists, but the nerds... none of you are nerds. I can tell.

This whole "you younger guys" know nothing about being nerds stuff is only partially true...i don't remember the computer geek at my high school getting dates, and it may not get them beat up but it didn;t win them any friends.

Its like the old "when i was a kid I walked 6 miles to school" argument.

I'm not one though, I'm not a nerd, people of my generation aren't.

It's the generation before me.

Unpopular kids are unpopular kids, but technology is accessible now, and it's accessible to a lot of people. The old system doesn't exist.

Well, no, not crack, but I didn't consider the issue fully. I think we have, collectively , become more computer savvy, but to be honest, I'm not sure how far this extends, as I have too often worked away from the assumption that people know as much or more about computers than I do (which often turns out not to be the case).

On the issue of the games, I would say that, if the kid (or kids) is really into the game, and looks into how it's made, the technicalities, etc., begins to actively participate in formulating new games, consoles, etc., then yeah, I would consider that person a nerd. But coming from me, that's a compliment, as I think being a nerd is a good thing.

But the point you made is a good one, I should've considered the distinction beforehand.

But one doesn;t need ot really understand anything about a computer to use it...I think today people confuse frequent computer usage with nerdom.

Being great at Halo, and knowing enough about video cards to get a goodone for the game is still not computer nerdom, its Halo nerdom.

I'm definitely a computer nerd. I spend hours upon hours online, and if I have an ever faster connection I would be online even more. Don't feel bad about being a computer nerd, its something you should embrace!
