 Logan
Quote: In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. His attempts to hide from the world and his legacy, however, are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

I've seen the film twice now.
Exciting, sad, and hopeful in equal measure, LOGAN is a great film. Some people will think it's boring -- it's a movie that takes it slow and isn't afraid to be quiet for long periods of time -- but I was riveted from the first frame.
It's not only the best X-MEN movie but the best comic book film in years.

Logan
Awesome, awesome film. It is finally the type of Wolverine film we've been waiting 17 years for. Easily the best X-Men film. Congratulations, James Mangold, you've killed off Jackman's Wolverine and Stewart's Professor X but still ended the entire franchise on a very high note. The film is non-stop action and intensity. It is gritty, bloody, and ferocious. The world building with hints every so often is also really well done.

 Re: Logan
Hey Algren. Just because it's opening tonight in the U.S. and people might wander in here before seeing it, I put some of that in spoiler text.

Hey The Dark Shape. Just because "spoilers are ALLOWED inside" this forum, I've edited my post and removed the spoiler tags. If people don't want to be spoiled, don't come in here and read reviews. What I will do is add a warning at the start of my review.

 Re: Logan
One thing that really pissed me off is the Chinese version is cut to shit. The final fight, which I had been anticipating since the trailers because it looks fucking awesome, was completely removed. Logan takes his green serum, you see him running towards the pack of soldiers, then he grabs one and swings him for a split-second before the scene cuts to him on the ground in front of Richard E. Grant/robot-arm-dude saying something to the tune of "the potion is wearing off". So all the killing of the soldiers was removed. FUCK YOU, CHINA.stuffp mentioned that the run-time in China is only 123 minutes, whereas the real run-time is 137 minutes. But fortunately that didn't affect how awesome it was. I'll see it again, hopefully in Hong Kong, to get the full experience, but it really is a great film, and of course a lot is still shown even in the Chinese version.

 Re: Logan
Sure. But I don't believe this film is any more or less important than all the other films I've seen before anyone else in the US, and you didn't edit those reviews as well.

 Re: Logan
I didn't see those reviews. I would have done the same thing if anyone had posted that. But a spoiler warning does the same thing.
Anyway, was every bit of violence cut to shreds there?

 Re: Logan
Well, it's hard to tell. The difference in running times certainly suggests it was, but the only noticeable removal was from the final fight in the woods. I'm pretty good at noticing censored edits since I see 95% of my films in China, and nothing pre-finale felt cut.

 Re: Logan
I loved this. It was thrilling and incredibly touching in equal measure. I definitely cried or teared up at a few moments throughout, there's just such an attachment to Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart as these characters after watching them inhabit them for 17 years and it's very surreal to see them saying goodbye. But they have a phenomenal sendoff. The R rating helps in spades and this movie is incredibly brutal, it surprised me with its intensity and shock factor several times. Jackman delivers one of the best performances of his career too. The action sequences are well choreographed and exciting, and the ending is beautiful. Couldn't have asked for a better closer for his character. I agree this is one of the best comic book movies in years. A-/A

thompsoncory wrote: Also, shortest 2 1/2 hour movie ever? Probably. It certainly zips by in no time at all. Agree with you about the relationship between Charles and Logan. The dialogue is really well-written. It is a bit surreal to see these characters, so child-friendly for 17 years, now drop countless F-bombs, but the character's feel more real because of it. The bickering and bringing-up-of-the-past is great for this on-screen relationship.

 Re: Logan
Tremendous, perhaps even eclipsing X2 as my favorite superhero film. It recognizes and honors the popular-culture import of being Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart's farewell to iconic characters they have played for nearly two decades, further shading and complicating their father/son or teacher/pupil relationship as both men wrestle with frailty, mortality, and regret. The resulting dynamic is incredibly poignant, and both actors shine. The film is also superb and singular in general—a subtly dystopian, smartly paced, frequently brutal neo-Western with thematic and emotional depth, as well as several neat world-building flourishes—and I credit 20th Century Fox, infamously conservative and prying in their handling of certain X-Men and Fantastic Four films past, for allowing its creators to follow their muses in such different, difficult, and rewarding directions. I am broadly reminded of Mad Max: Fury Road, another bold, even wild artistic achievement doubling as a mega-budget franchise entry.
I do not wish to retroactively downplay how superior the modest, entertaining, Japan-set The Wolverine is to the godawful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but this is so clearly on a higher, more electrifying plane, it is arbitrary, but apt to also declare it the best of the solo-Wolverine trilogy.

 Re: Logan
I never thought X2 would be topped as my favourite XMen film but Logan did.
Brilliant film that hits all the right notes. Couldn't ask for a better farewell for Jackman as Wolverine and Stewart as Xavier. Both are brilliant here.
