I think it's Terminator.

After 2 great films, T3 was a big disappointment and even though I liked Salvation many others didn't and then they made the biggest monster yet with Genesis relegating the Terminator name to B-film status.

There should be other franchises that started off great too, but I can't think of ones right away who's peak was higher and drop-off bigger than Terminator.

They're already taking the third kick at Spider-Man this century. The movie character seems to be regressing to a more and more juvenile state. By the time they get to the fifth reboot in 2025, they'll have to rename the franchise Spider-Baby.

Batman is on its fifth attempt.

At least that's over a 50 year period - the three most recent Spider-Man variations have been in less than 10 years.

Yeah, I wasn't competing with your suggestion. Just saying that Batman is also a character that has had multiple attempts. Removing the 1966 film, it has been four attempts in 20 years. That's something.

Terminator ruined a perfectly good brand. Garfield Spiderman are actually decent films it's just no1curr about high school Spiderman reboot that isn't Tobey or trading lines with Tony Stark

Producers Mario Kassar, Andrew Vajna, Director Jonathan Mostow, and writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris actually ruined the franchise. Cameron did his part as well by selling the rights but also by refusing to direct a third film. And Schwarzenegger also played his part by a) accepting the deal to appear in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and b) not convincing James Cameron to direct.

From that moment, with the change in hands, the franchise was doomed and it has always been on a downward spiral.

Jaws and Superman (Especially, pretty much every film has had some sort of weird production issues, even Burton's failed attempt in the 90s where they spent almost 50 million before they pulled the plug (Cage and Burton alone received 20 million from pay or play contracts)

Jaws adjusts to 1.1 billion
Jaws 2 had the biggest opening weekend of all time but still adjusts to about 286 million
Jaws 3D still had enough of a hook to have the 2nd biggest opening of 1983 (about 55 million today) and juste to 125 million. And the film is awful.
Jaws IV: The Revenge had the 20th biggest opening of 1987 and adjusts to 45 million. It's a series where literally no one even thinks of the sequels, except in ridicule. They almost give stink to classic original.

I would have said Jurassic Park before Jurassic World redeemed it a bit.

It's because they just rely on the same formula as the first, but the second and third films are fine. I remember the third being better than the second. The fourth is trash, but whatever.

Pirates is heading that way.

I don't think it's for lack of trying. No matter what the Pirates sequels did no one was happy. 2-3 were too complicated, long and focused too much on Will and Elizabeth. 4 was simpler and ditched them, but people still didn't like it.

I thought the second was actually pretty good.

Dead Man's Chest is great. At World's End would have been fine if they had filmed it normally and gave the editors some more time.

Even though I was down on Tides, before and after it came out, I'm kinda ready for more Pirates. Javier's villain looks fun too.

I really love the first three. The fourth is good too, but not as good.

This thread reminds me of a creep in a film-related group on Facebook, who watched I Spit on Your Grave 2 and lamented that though the film was decent, it did not contain "enough rape".

The rape is tamer than in the first, but I'm not sure I would pick that as the film's core issue. lol
